Video-database of Chemical Experiments - formation and evaluation
Vrzáčková, Eva ; Šmejkal, Petr (advisor) ; Teplý, Pavel (referee)
For many reasons, Chemistry is not among the most popular subjects at Secondary schools. Many students find this subject challenging and difficult to understand. Experiments in Chemistry mainly drive the students' motivation for the subject. Unfortunately, they are often missing during Chemistry lessons, due to high demands on preparation time as well as safety hazards or a lack of chemicals required. Although a real experiment is difficult to replace, a video experiment might be a useful and sufficient alternative when lacking preparation time or the required chemicals, or in case of experiments with safety risks. This thesis therefore focuses on building a video experiment database by extending and improving the basic Chemistry Experiment Database located on the website www.studiumchemie.cz. This is a website administrated by the Faculty of Science of Charles University in Prague, serving as support for Secondary school Chemistry teachers. The database itself was created as a part of my bachelor thesis. The database was now extended and many improvements were made, following the results of a survey among Chemistry teachers, who asked for more experiments in Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry. 96 new experiments were added, with regard to the teachers' suggestions. Currently the database contains...

Innovations of Education Content and Methods in Teaching Chemistry Focusing on ICT-supported Visualization
Adamec, Martin ; Beneš, Pavel (advisor) ; Bílek, Martin (referee) ; Šmejkal, Petr (referee)
The use of information and communication technologies, including computer graphics, in teaching chemistry is one of the frequent issues of contemporary chemistry didactics. Current publications are mainly focused on displaying structure of chemical compounds and symbolic form of chemical reactions. This thesis offers a more complex view on the computer graphics and other means of information and communication technologies - their possibilities and limits of use in teaching. The goal of the thesis is to provide an overview of selected computer-graphics technologies and to discuss their role during current curricular reform, based on current problems identified by students attending chemistry-teacher training courses and chemistry teachers. Usability of selected elements in pre-teaching and teaching phases was checked. Innovations of contemporary teaching methods were proposed using computer graphics. The thesis is focused on the area of visualization of educational content with use of computer graphics, computer-assisted innovation of methods and educational content, computer games and the role of computer graphics in didactic transformation. Two textbooks for lower-secondary and upper-secondary schools were created. These textbooks contain newly developed parts using computer graphics. According to...
Selection and development of new educational materials for high school support webpage www.studiumchemie.cz
Brenner, David ; Šmejkal, Petr (advisor) ; Teplý, Pavel (referee)
This diploma thesis is focused on development and production of functional parts and new materials for the purpose of supporting educational website www.studiumchemie.cz on evaluation of its operation. The changes were made in graphical, structural and functional parts of website, which were designed based on the analysis of behavior of visitors to the website and by direct reaction of visitors. Changes were related to structure of database of chemical experiments or creating new features for registered users, such as evaluation of materials or personification of user profile. In cooperation with specialists have been incorporated several new materials, focusing on the issues of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). In addition to that, two new games have been prepared - Chemical pentathlon and Identify molecules. New materials should be used to expand the portfolio of educational materials on the website. Furthermore, the administration interface has been created and designed to meet the needs of editorial contributors site without prior programming experience. Evaluation of the statistics associated with the operation of the site showed that web traffic continues to grow. The most visited parts of the site are database of educational materials and videos of chemical experiments. The current site traffic is...
Development of new educational materials for chemistry education in a form of webpage
Kraus, Jiří ; Šmejkal, Petr (advisor) ; Hájková, Zdeňka (referee)
This diploma thesis is focused on design and preparation of a new educational material focused on the theme of chemical bond. The material has been prepared with regard to content and with approaches based on results of analysis of secondary school textbooks and internet sources which deal with chemical bond and current curricular documents valid in the Czech Republic. First part of the thesis deals with specification and determination of necessary terms and arbitrary content of theme of chemical bond based on the content current curricular documents, especially FEP G (Framework educational program for secondary general education), Katalog požadavků ke zkouškám společné části maturitní zkoušky pro rok 2011 a 2012 (Catalog of requirements for the common part of mature examination for yers 2011 and 2012), four selected School educational programs (ŠVP - školní vzdělávací program) and on evaluation and term analysis and didactic content analysis at most common secondary school textbooks and selected internet sources focused on theme of chemical bond. The results of the evaluation and analysis also showed the incompleteness of the analyzed materials with regard to didactic content and/or specialized content. On the basis of results of the analysis and the evaluation, a new educational material in the...
Chemistry education at Czech Waldorf Schools and possibilities of student portfolio work in chemistry teaching
Ševčík, Ondřej ; Šmejkal, Petr (advisor) ; Mazáčová, Nataša (referee)
This diploma thesis is focused on aspects of education at Waldorf schools. It deals marginally with some general aspects of Waldorf pedagogy, on the other hand, the Waldorf school teaching plan, especially in chemistry teaching context is described and discussed in detail. Educational approaches and procedures at Czech Waldorf schools (especially Prague schools) are described and discussed, based on a personal experience. The second part of the thesis is focused on evaluation of key competences through the Waldorf portfolio work. Many inspirations to chemistry teaching on Waldorf schools (and common schools) are included, which are mostly verified in my praxis. Appendix includes examples of students portfolio works and methodical commentaries to chemistry teaching at Waldorf schools of secondary level.
Vibrational spectroscopy in pharmaceutical analysis
Průchová, Kristýna ; Němec, Ivan (advisor) ; Šmejkal, Petr (referee)
The aim of this diploma thesis is the application of vibrational spectroscopy in pharmaceutical analysis in studying solid pharmaceutical forms. The surface of tablet samples containing the active substance from the group of statins has been studied especially by the methods infrared microscopy. Spectral maps of samples were collected thanks to the techniques of specular reflection, attenuated total reflection (ATR) and "inverse" ATR after determining optimal conditions for measurements. In order to evaluate these measured maps, one-dimensional analysis and principal component analysis were used. As the same samples of tablets were also measured by Raman microscopy, the comparison has been provided. The measured distribution maps enable both a determination of substances in the sample and conclusion concerned a method of tablets' preparation. The method in this case is a granulation, which has been found out from a comparison of maps of generic and original medicament. The specular reflection method was selected to be the most appropriate technique for obtaining the maps of the surface of a tablet, via confrontation of particular methods consequently with consideration of their advantages and disadvantages in the measurement and data processing.
