Telling Community in William Faulkner's A Rose for Emily: A Case Study in Narrative Technique

This MA thesis provides a close analysis of William Faulkner's most famous short story, "A Rose for Emily." The focus the thesis is motivated by what I take to be the central theme of the short story: community and its functioning. Shifting the focus from the main character to the narrator, I want to "rectify" the perception of the short story which owns its renown largely to its "shocking" or "gothic" aspect. The utilized methodology is chosen with respect to the proposed interpretation. The prism through which the text is approached is narratology. To account for the peculiar narrator of "A Rose for Emily," I use the narratological framework of "collective narrative" ("we narration"). Another important theoretical framework introduced in order to interpret the short story is the interdisciplinary concept of "collective memory." Some sociological conceptions of community are discussed. In the introductory chapter, I mainly discuss the concept of person in narrative and argue against the traditional distinction between first and third person narratives. In the second chapter, I provide an introduction to the technique of collective narrative. The third chapter provides a close reading of "A Rose for Emily" in the context of collective narrative. Regional Identity and Conflict in Transnistria since Late Communism

This study examines the issues of Transnistrian conflict, Transnistrian identity and Transnistrian statehood through the fields of historiography, economic development, language and educational politics, religion, Soviet ideology and the place of memory in two parts of the Republic of Moldova, Bessarabia and Transnistria. The results of this study reveal the influence of the above-listed spheres on identity in both regions, the significant role of the leadership of Transnistria and the Republic of Moldova in shaping peoples' opinion and strengthening the idea of Transnistrian statehood, and the existence of regional identity in Transnistria during a phase of transition.

Collective Memory and Historical Responsibility in Contemporary Japan

Collective memory is a term that describes a series of memories of individuals that are shared by the collective and treated as official and socially acceptable for the group, may that be a small community or the whole nation. Memory is always selective and subjective so it cannot be taken as an equal to history. However, its value as a historical source should not be underestimated. A significant part of the collective memory in contemporary Japan is the Second World War. Even though it has been almost two generations since its end, the memories and the legacy are still vivid. The reason why is the great impact the war had on the Japanese. The country changed immensely and the society also underwent major modifications. One of them was the fact that once a proud nation deriving its origin from gods had to take responsibility for the war atrocities and accept their defeat. As my work will demonstrate, the question of historical responsibility has not been fully answered yet. There are still people who believe that Japan has not done enough to apologise and atone for its crimes and they demand action. I am using the example of the former comfort women, whose case is still open, to illustrate that there are still war-connected problems in Japan that are being overlooked or not dealt with properly....

Písek - transformation of local identity in the modernization process (1861-1914)

In the theoretical part of this thesis are discussed concepts of collective memory created by Maurice Halbwachs, Pierre Nora and Jan Assmann, the author considers them inspiring for the research about forming of collective identity. Case study is given to the South Bohemian town of Pisek and the changing of its identity in the second half of the 19th century. It gives an overview of available sources and detailed biographies of people, who were most important for the forming of local identity. By using the analysis of dictionary entries are recognized basic attributes of local identity and their various forms, focusing particularly on process of modernization. The Media Impact on the Collective Memory

This dissertation addresses the issues of collective memory in relationship with mass media. The key concepts from both fields are included. The emphasis is put on distinction between collective memory concept and other key concepts like history or historical consciousness. Subsequently the theories presenting correlation between the media and the collective memory are introduced; a lesser empirical part is also included. The main goal of this dissertation is to connect two seemingly separated issues into one compact concept, to demonstrate possible way how media forms collective memory and to support these conclusions by results from the empirical research. Media (Re)Construction of Collective Memory: October and November as a Support for the Contemporary Czech National Identity

The bachelor thesis "Media (Re)Construction of Collective Memory: October and November as a Support for the Contemporary Czech National Identity" focuses on relation between mass media, collective memory and national identity. In accordance with social constructionism theory, the terms collective memory and national identity are understood as social constructs whereas mass media is considered to be one of the social construction agents. The aim of this work is to analyse a variety of media interpretations on significant Czech history events - October 28, 1918 and November 17, 1989. Analysed are newspaper commentaries published in order to commemorate these events during the eleven- year period from 1998 to 2009. As a resource for the analysis I have chosen three Czech daily newspapers - Hospodářské noviny, Lidové noviny and Mladá fronta DNES. The research method used is media qualitative content analysis. The work objective is to examine the typical media discourses based on national history which are constructed in a way to support contemporary Czech national identity. Not only does this thesis consist of research, it also includes methodology and theoretical framework.

Transformation of the st. Wenceslas symbol and cult in Czech press around the breaking points of the Czech 20th century history

The thesis deal with transformations of st. Wenceslas symbol and his cult in the Czech press around breaking points of Czech 20th century history. It asks about impact of contemporary policy and incidents on presentation of st. Wenceslas symbol, then about parts of st. Wenceslas cult and finally about connection of this symbol with other national symbols. The thesis is based on the assumtion that national identity is constructed through collective memory of members of the nation, appropriate symbology and history interpretation. Research uses qualitative metods (discourse analysis). Sample is made of Czech (mostly) statewide press articles that are related to st. Wenceslas and his cult, from the period around the st. Wenceslas day (28th September), in several years intervals around appointed breaking points (1918, 1938, 1939, 1945, 1948, 1968 and 1989). It has been found that 1. st. Wenceslas symbol represents unchanging connection of the church and the nation in the case of Catholic perspective, 2. in danger it mobilizes and symbolizes the statehood and the strength of the nation in case of the nationalistic use and 3. it can support legitimity of new established regime. Role of mass media in shaping the collective memory in contemporary Japan

The thesis is focused on Japanese media and especially on their role in the Japanese society. Their impact is noticeable in the way of shaping the national collective memory. One of the unsolved issues of Japan's past, which still resonates in the Japanese society, is the issue of the former comfort women. From the beginning of the 1990s the thus far neglected issue has been given more media attention, which makes it an ideal study case for the influence of media on shaping the collective memory of a nation. With the help of one media that has been following the plight of the former comfort women incessantly till now, the Asahi Shinbun, the thesis documents the method, by which the issue has been dealt with, and the response of the public to the articles of this daily newspaper, which it has created. As the topic has been being discussed for over thirty years, the analysis of the articles is concentrated on two key periods: 1991-1997 and 2010-2014. Using Susan Pharr's model of the types of roles of mass media, the thesis seeks to learn what role the Asahi Shinbun plays in this issue and whether anything has changed in the last thirty years. This bachelor thesis deals with memory institutions of South Bohemia, Upper Austria and Lower Bavaria. The main purpose of this bachelor thesis is to chart and subsequently compare chosen temporary expositions, which were realised in years 19902013 and with their projects characterized the issue of Czech-German coexistence. The following analysis of the sources and literature will lead to name the key topics of Czech-German relations, which pay attention to the memory institutions. Further it will lead to characterize their changes in the monitored period and also to the evaluation their influence during the construction of the common collective memory.

The role of Munich agreement in Czechoslovakia in the period 1945 to 1948

This thesis analyzes the consequences of the Munich Agreement for Czechoslovakia in the period 1945 to 1948 taking into account the years 1938 to 1944. In the introductory theoretical chapter is analyzed collective and individual memory and created construction of collective identity. In the subsequent chapters with the recollection and memory is then presented Munich impact on society created by the press as well as by political leaders headed by President Benes. Till the end of 1945, in the spirit of "Atonement" Munich, were performed the majority of changes essential especially for the state and society and they are the subject of investigation based on press, speeches and memoirs.
