Image of the enemy in the discourse of security forces
Jeřábková, Darina ; Vávra, Martin (advisor) ; Cviklová, Lucie (referee)
The "internal enemy" was a formal term heavily represented in the language of the State Security (a secret service of the Czechoslovak Republic and Czechoslovak Socialist Republic), denoting a specified category of opponents to the then regime. The State Security's task was to protect the socialist and social system by fighting the external and internal enemies, with the security forces having been the authorities deciding who met the criteria. The thesis entitled "The Internal Enemy Image in the Discourse of Security Forces" aims to find out how the discourse of the State Security defined the term "internal enemy". The thesis is divided into the theoretical and empirical parts. The empirical part applies the qualitative analysis of the discourse to search for the characteristic of the term "internal enemy". All of the texts analysed in the thesis come from the Security Services Archive, administering relevant files of the era, and date back to the 1950s-1980s.
Rejection of an application for citizenship of the Czech Republic due to a security threat
Hlubučková, Kristýna ; Hřebejk, Jiří (advisor) ; Uhl, Pavel (referee)
Rejection of an application for citizenship of the Czech Republic due to a security threat Abstract This diploma thesis focuses on the analysis of a minority opinion, based on the thesis that a restriction of procedural rights of applicants for citizenship whose application was rejected due to a security threat is not fully in line with the principle of poportionality and the fair trial right. The assessment of whether the principle of proportionality has been mainteined is based on comparison of the value of state security and the potential interference with the (fundamental) rights and freedoms of the applicants. Furthermore, the thesis deals with the procedure of the Ministry of the Interior in assessing the positions of the intelligence services of the Czech Republic and the Police of the Czech Republice and the role of the Constitutional Court and the Ombudsman in the proces of reviewing potential interference with (fundamental) rights and freedoms of citizenship applicants. For the purpose of the analysis of the statements outlined above is used: case law of the Constitutional Court of the Czech Republic on the provisons of Article 22 Paragraph 3 and Article 26 of Act No. 186/2013 Coll., On Citizenship of the Czech Republic, and the Explanatory Memorandum to this Act. The studies of academics had been...
Czechoslovak action art and performance between 1963 and 1989: was the artistic freedom restricted by the State security?
The Role of Constitutional Organs in Ensuring the State Security
Dienstbier, Jakub ; Jirásková, Věra (referee)
1 The Role of Constitutional Organs in Ensuring the State Security Abstract This diploma thesis deals with question, what role are constitutional organs, such as President of the Republic, Government, Parliament and Security Council of the State, playing in the security system of the Czech Republic. For this purpose, the thesis shows the constitutional system of the Czech Republic on the example of position of President of the Republic. Main part of the thesis is based on analysis of President's status as Commander in Chief of armed forces because of the lack of complex attention of Czech constitutional doctrine. According to that, the thesis describes Czechoslovak constitutional development in the first place and compares it with present legal framework. The thesis uses all methods of legal interpretation from the constitutional point of view as well as knowledges of other academic disciplines and interprets the constitutional terms "armed forces" and "Commander in Chief". This interpretation is followed by the criticism of statutory regulation and assess the content of Commander in Chief`s authority. The thesis express other presidential activities with security dimension, too. The thesis especially justifies presidential rights and competencies in connection with intelligence agencies. The effect of climate change on the effect of state security: An analysis of Burkina Faso and Djibouti
Alexandru, Luca ; Riegl, Martin (advisor) ; Doboš, Bohumil (referee)
This thesis examines the extent to which climate change is able to affect the security of states, with Burkina Faso and the Republic of Djibouti chosen as the case studies for this investigation. While the general effects of climate change on security are understood, the academic community appears to disagree on the subject of conflict-generation via climactic pressures. Consequently, the analysis is divided into two sections: The first part utilizes over 2,000 individual events collected by the Armed Conflict and Event Data program and examines the relationship between climate change and their occurrence. This is done firstly through a preliminary keyword analysis, then through a multivariate regression analysis of the relevant climate change factors. The second part takes a pseudo-qualitative approach by merging the Fragile State Index methodology and a weighted systems model in order to calculate values for each relevant state dimension that has been affected, thereby numerically quantifying the effect. The results indicate that currently, weak to moderate negative effects may be observed on the two states, depending on the security dimension examined. The economic and sociodemographic aspects appear to be most susceptible to environmental pressures.

The Media Image of State Security in the Rudé právo and Svobodné slovo dailies (November 1989 - June 1990)
Vávra, Martin ; Železný, Jakub (advisor) ; Růžička, Daniel (referee)
The bachelor's thesis titled "The Media Image of State Security in the Rudé právo and Svobodné slovo dailies (November 1989-June 1990)" discusses the media's image of the State Security Organisation (StB) over a period of several months following the events of the 17th of November 1989, when the communist regime in Czechoslovakia fell. The dailies analysed for this study were Rudé právo and Svobodné slovo. The periodicals were selected according to their political orientations. Rudé právo, described as "a paper published by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia", was a daily that officially represented the governing regime. Svobodné slovo, which began publishing the first uncensored information in November 1989 and called the "primary daily" of the Velvet Revolution, was selected as its opposite counterpart. This work has four chapters. The first chapter examines the State Security Organisation and its history, organisational structure, methods and manner of work in 1989. The second chapter presents the selected dailies Rudé právo and Svobodné slovo. The third chapter discusses the methodology of the entire work, and the final chapter contains research on the selected dailies in the form of a quantitative content analysis.

Jakub Deml as Remembered by Josef Jelen
Burget, Eduard
In 1998 the Catholic priest, poet and journalist Josef Jelen published his memoir Jeden z prokletých (One of the Damned) in an attempt to justify his position and views in the years of the so-called normalization. In the memoir Jelen tends to emphasize his friendships with a number of influential writers: the most important of them would have been Jakub Deml whom Jelen continued to visit in Tasov into the 1950s. at the beginning of the 1960s Jelen resigned from the priesthood and shortly afterwards became a secret collaborator of the Communist State Security.
