Space as a socially constructed form of oppression: the transformation of an asylum for women with mental handicap in the Usti Region
Růžičková, Kamila ; Kolářová, Kateřina (advisor) ; Ezzeddine, Petra (referee)
In my thesis I deal with the representations of mental handicap in the Czech context. The theoretical base I found in the field of disability studies and its model of disability, which I have enriched with the approaches of poststructuralist authors and also with the Czech authors who see the mental handicap from a different perspective than the "majority society". The representation of mental handicap in the Czech context I show at the example of a home for people with disabilities, specifically for the mentally disabled women, which is located in the Usti Region. This institution is involved in the project called The support of planning the transformation of social services in the Usti Region. In the thesis I deal with the issue how are these planning changes communicated with clients and what connotations are given to the planned change of living space. In the empirici section, I talk through the semi-structured interviews with five woman clients of the institution and ask them about their current life. Then I analyze the types of spaces Theky mentioned. Their questions are completed with an interview with the manager of the institution, who talks about the motives that led to the transformation process. Keywords disability, client, citizenship, human rights, space, gender, social service,...
Roma in the Czech Republic: Adolescence, Identity and Schooling. A Case Study of Three Teenage Girls from Prague
Rajkovic, Ivana ; Káňová, Šárka (advisor) ; Šumníková, Pavlína (referee)
This study focuses on the identities and self-perception of Roma adolescents in the Czech Republic and the educational implications these may have for this particular group of students. In particular it attempts to shed light on how these individuals perceive themselves, their schooling and future adult roles they expect to take on in life. Furthermore, the perceptions and involvement of Roma parents was also examined in an attempt to explore their views on education that they transmit to their children. A theoretical framework was developed based upon the ecological systems theory, theories on the identity development in adolescence, ethnic minority identity as well as the existing literature on the schooling of ethnic minority pupils. A qualitative approach followed by a multiple case study design was taken with semi-structured interviews as the research method. The empirical study was conducted with three female participants from one low-threshold facility for children and youth in Prague. Data was analysed using the phenomenological approach which regards the reality not as a given entity but as socially constructed by individuals according to their everyday experiences. The key findings of the study suggest that Roma children do not have negative identities developed, there are no negative values they...
Comparison of logical and psychological perspectives on the concept of number.
Kuncová, Alexandra ; Punčochář, Vít (advisor) ; Kůrka, Petr (referee)
This paper is divided into three main parts. In the first part, we propose a logical approach to the concept of number based on Frege's Foundations of Arithmetic. Besides the main attempt to define and classify number per se, we also discuss Husserl's struggle with psychologism, Frege's logicism, and the construction of the series of natural numbers. In the second part, we look at a psychological approach to the concept of number through theories and experiments of cogni- tive science. We focus on infants' understanding of numbers and amounts, their counting abilities and later conventional skills. In the third part, we summarise differences as well as similarities of these two approaches. Keywords: cognitive science, concept, Frege, Husserl, identity, logicism, num- ber, one-to-one correspondence, Piaget, psychologism. This work deals with Aimé Césaire's book Cahier d'un retour au pays natal, its function a value for author himself and for reader. At first, the paper explains, using linguistic and semantic analysis of chosen passages of this book, the liberation of author from the literary conventions and forms of his time, the quest of authentic style and his own poetic language. In the first part, the influence of french literature on Césaire's creation, precisely of Lautréamont, Rimbaud, Baudelaire, is explained. Afterwards, the work focuses on the emancipation tendencies which consist in the organic incorporation of the surrealistic practices and of creole influence into his poetry. In the second part, the paper attempts to give a description of author's determination to liberate the oppressed people, by the society, and his seeking of a new identity, based on omitted history of this people, on his ancestors and mainly on his forgotten roots. In the first place, indirect influence of the colonialism: his cruelty, enslavement, Triangular trade on Césaire's literary creation is described. The aim is to show the attitude of the author to the suffering of slaves and how he describes it to the reader and how he uses his heroes to accuse the colonialism of his cruel and usually atrocious practices to regain proud for his people.
Occidentalism in Russian Travel Literature in the 18th Century: Example of Nikolai Mikhailovich Karamzin
Stergiopoulou, Eleni ; Himl, Pavel (advisor) ; Power, Martina (referee) ; Erdösi, Péter (referee)
Occidentalism in Russian Travel Literature in the 18th Century: Example of Nikolaj Mihailovič Karamzin Summary The purpose of this research is to explore how the national and cultural identity of Russia was constructed in the eighteenth century through the vehicle of travel writing. At the heart of this research is a close analysis of the travels of the Russian author Nikolaj Karamzin to the Western Europe. Karamzin's Letters of a Russian Traveller is a travelogue in the form of memoir in epistolary arrangement based on his travels through the states of Germany, Switzerland, France and England in 1789-1790. The era and the author chosen are justified by the graveness that the eighteenth century has for the history of the Russian literature. An era of major transformations in all social and cultural aspects of the till-then known Russian lifestyle set the ground for a move towards modernity. By travelling to the Western Europe and displaying the values and rich greatness of some aspects of the cultural, political and social lives, Karamzin proposes a set of alternative national ideals. These ideals would assist the country and the nation to get closer to the standards of the Western traditions and subsequently closer to 'paradise' and the 'perfect' life. As a contextual backup for the analysis of Karamzin's...
Identity, past and present in Mario Benedetti's stories of exile
Mizzau, Carla ; Poláková, Dora (advisor) ; Marešová, Jaroslava (referee)
The purpose of this paper is to identify and to highlight the main rhetoric and narrative elements connected to the topic of identity in exile in the work of Uruguayan author Mario Benedetti. We will first analyze the sociopolitical situation in Uruguay as well as South America during the decade of 1970, as well as the consequences and the impact the experience of exile produces in an individual's self-perception Five representative stories, created by this writer during his own exile, are used to deal with various aspects of identity. The focus will be first on the characters' perception and awareness regarding the changes, the everyday habits as well as the anomalous life situation in which they find themselves. We will also discuss how their physical reality reflects a spiritual and irreversible condition due to the extreme drama experienced. Then reference will be made to the habits and values that necessarily go into crisis when, in order to survive under conditions of pressure, a new social and cultural environment is chosen. Finally, we will focus on the individual's sense of belonging to his place of origin, and how it is affected after living for some time in the host country when nostalgia, feelings of guilt, and adaptation to a new socio-cultural environment play a crucial role.
