A portrait of a journalist throughout the comic book production

The thesis A Portrait of a Journalist throughout the Comic Book Production deals with comics as a medium with a potential to create certain ideas about society. The aim of this thesis is to define typology of fictional journalists in comic books and to answer the question whether these comic images form stereotypes about journalistic profession. The thesis is divided into three parts: theoretical, historical and analytical. In the first part the author deals with the theoretical definition of terms used in the field of comics and media studies, which is closely related to the concept of the thesis (comics, journalist, stereotypes, interpretation). The second chapter summarizes the historical development of a comic's production on each continent. Special attention is devoted to a distinctive formation of the comic series in the Czech environment. Based on the previous research the author analyzes the comic book characters of journalists in the main part of the thesis. These are divided into categories according to the nature of the characters, gender differences and genres. A Rite of Passage: The Transformation of Anglo-American Comic Books in the Post-World War II Era

1 Abstract The subject matter of the bachelor thesis is the evolution of Anglo-American mainstream comic books in the post-World War II era, with principal focus on the epochs that have transformed this art form the most during the past seventy years. The thesis aims to present Anglo-American comic books as a medium with substantial storytelling potential that had to struggle with harsh censorship and the unforgiving dynamics of the entertainment industry in order to maintain its position in Western popular culture. The continuous efforts of comic books to remain socially relevant and to connect with audiences are explored though an overview of key decades in the medium's history, which are accompanied by the analyses of select works. The contents as well as format of these works show that comic books are a remarkably adaptive art form that can not only operate within a wide array of genres but also merge with other forms of popular entertainment, transcending the boundaries of traditional media. The first chapter contains a brief overview of the origins and post-war development of comic books, while the subsequent passages offer a more detailed analysis of three crucial periods in the medium's history. Analysis of the Representation of Sexual Minorities in Marvel Comics

The topic of this work is the analysis of development of the LGBT minority in Marvel comics. Action, appearance, relations, speech and story-lines of characters are to be used as semiotic resources and analysed using tools of visual studies and social semiotics. Visual anthropology, semiotics and sociology will serve as the main theoretical base. This work aims to identify changes of representation of said minorities in the context of social and cultural changes in American society.
Seriality in Czech and Slovak Comics Narration. Genres -Models - Worlds

The PhD thesis Seriality in Czech and Slovak Comics Narration. Genres - Models - Worlds intends to deepen our understanding of the historically most prevalent serial form (as in "form of organization") of comics' texts, which phenomenon is here described and further studied building upon the material base of the Czechoslovak comics of the 20th century. At the same time, this seriality is considered here as both the topic of research and its main analytical tool, since the thesis aims to advance our knowledge of history of local comics, as well as to propose seriality-related theoretical tools and concepts. On the historical and interpretative level, the Czechoslovak tradition of comics is conceptualized through its dominant publication-presentation types (comics being presented in the periodicals context) of episodic segments with their strictly limited space/page allowance, with focus on formats and models of periodicity, as well as on genre and composition related topics. Further chapters are dedicated to specific sub-categories of comics narratives (either format-based - comic strip, or genre-oriented - funny animal comics). The evolution of purpose and status of comic strips in czech cultural magazines

This master's thesis is a study of the comic strip and its tradition in the Czech Republic. It covers development of this format and its occurrence in Czech periodicals as well as the gradual use of comics' visual language and different views on the comic strip definition. Taking views from several different perspectives including artists, writers, magazine editors and publishers this thesis will show the principles of cooperation between the comic creator and the editors of the magazine in which it is published. This is supported by original research (see Appendix) and has the goal of showing the motivations, perceptions and approaches to the comic strip from the perspective of the creator as well as the magazine editor. The research uses case studies based on structured interviews with editors of cultural magazines in the Czech Republic and with the creators of the comic strips that they publish. The results of this research combined with the historical and contemporary context offer a close look into the current perception of the comic strip as a format for creative expression, but also the magazine editor's responsibility in publishing the comic strip.
Media coverage of anglo-american comic books in Czech and foreign media from 2003 to 2013

Master's thesis analyzes critical reviews of Anglo-American comic books which were published in Czech Republic. The purpose is to describe contemporary Czech critique scene and to search for tendencies of the reviewers. To do so four comic books were chosen: TOP 10, Sin City 1: The Hard Goodbye, The Adventures of Luther Arkwright and the Czech edition of Batman: The Killing Joke. In the next phase critical reviews were looked up in web pages: Fantasy Planet, Komiksárium, Comics-blog, Neviditelný pes, Daemon and XB-1 magazine. Magazine Host and Lidové noviny newspapers with it's Saturday supplement Orientace represent printed media. There are also two examples of foreign critical reviews from web pages Comics Authority and Artbomb.net. Historical development of comics in Czechoslovakia and in the USA and Great Britain is described between years 1945 and 1989. The purpose is to find moments of mutual influence.
Superman: The Semantics, Evolution Poetics and Socio-cultural Specificities of the Superhero Comics.

This bachelor thesis considers the genre of superhero comics since its appearance in 1938 to the present time. The thesis, according to chosen comic books, tries to generally describe and interpret superhero discourse, in particular the evolution and various specificities. The main focus is on the comics narrativity and primary aspects of narration (narrator, intertextuality, characters, time of story). There is no analysis touching visual comics aspects. The only exception - the last chapter - examines the impressive evolution poetics of the title-pages.
Linguistic characteristics of the present comics

The thesis is focused on comics and mainly its lingustic aspect. The first part introduces comics as a cultural phenomenon and its various definitions from which the best possible is chosen. After that it deals with brief history of comics and its development from different geographic points of view. The attention is given to the language of comics and mainly to its specific, unique cooperation between words and images. In the second part analysis of two comic books, Anča a Pepík from 1990 and Na odstřel from 2014, from Lucie Lomová is realized. The results are compared with each other and conclusions are drawn. The common features of comics language are introduced on the bacground of the analyses.
