Czech serial "Velmi křehké vztahy" characters with regard to their property estate and social class

The thesis titled "Czech serial Velmi křehké vztahy characters with regard to their property estate and social class" is linked to specialised publications which originated in the Faculty of Social Sciences of the Charles University in Prague mapping how the 'after the velvet revolution' series made by the Czech TV portray the topic of wealth and affluence. The theory part consist of findings from two socio-scientific fields, i.e. sociology and media studies, the outcomes of which will consequently meet in the research part of this thesis. The subject matter of the research part of this thesis is the episodes of the third season of the Velmi křehké vztahy soap opera which was broadcast by the Prima Czech TV channel between 2008 and 2009. This research sample was achieved by using a qualitative research technique, specifically the grounded theory method. The thesis focuses predominantly on how a class hierarchy and wealth determine their character. The attention is also paid to listing various social classes which appear in the series, and to the outline of the areas of a social life in which the social mobility is possible. The Phenomenon of Zombies in Films by George A. Romero

(in English) This work deals with the phenomenon of zombie in films by George A. Romero. Its objective is to prove that, although the characteristics of the phenomenon underwent significant change within individual films by this director, it still preserved the basic metaphoric function it had already at the time of its origination in Haiti in the 17th century. . The analytical part, in which three selected zombie horrors by George A. Romero (Dawn of the Dead, Land of the Dead and Diary of the Dead) are discussed, is based on the methods of neoformalist analysis. Based on the analysis of individual films, I have proved that the zombie phenomenon in Romero's films works, the same as it does in Haiti, as a metaphor of slavery with this metaphor being varied depending on the issues that become the current topic of each of the films whose actual aim is to criticise the contemporary society.

The presented master thesis deals with the work of Jane Austen. The author's novels are analysed from the perspective of the concept of the family, both from a literary and demographic point of view. These research questions constitutes two subject of the examination. The first subject is the family, as it is the cornerstone of Jane Austen's short stories. The objective of this work is to analyse the extent to which family relationships determine the possibilities of the main characters and heroines; how the heroines benefit from family ties or, on the contrary, want to escape from them. The conclusions show that Austen applied this determination in all studied novels. This work further examines the degree of cooperation and rivalry of the individual families in the novels. At this point, a significant diversity of interfamily relationships was found. Secondly, this work maps selected demographic idiosyncrasies in Jane Austen's family, in the families from her short stories, and in historical demographic studies of England at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. Construction of student identity of Vietnamese college students with parents with different educational attainment

This bachelor thesis discusses the topic of university students of Vietnamese origin in regard to their parents' educational level. The aim of this thesis is to determine whether there are some differences between students, whose parents have achieved university degree, and students, whose parents do not have university degree. The potential differences are examined in relation to their perceptions of themselves as students, their decisions about university studies, the values ascribed to higher education and the processes that shape their identity. The research is also taking to account the influence of cultural context associated with family's migration experience, straddling between two cultures and relationship between children and parents. Theoretical chapters describe theories of educational transmission and the effects of social origin on education attainment. They also present the issue of first- generation university students and characterize Vietnamese minority in the Czech Republic. Didactic elaboration the topic structure of society in the social sciences at upper secondary school

The subject of this thesis is the structure of society and its didactic elaboration. The first few chapters are focused on Czech curriculum documents and three chosen foreign curricula (England, New Zealand, Australia) and provides an analysis of how these documents deal with the subject of the structure of society. The results of these analyses are compared with each other afterwards. The next part of the thesis deals with EU Council recommendations for the development of key student competencies. These competencies are then compared to the approach to student competencies in the Czech curriculum. One chapter is focused on textbooks for upper secondary schools and their approach to the structure of society. This is followed up with a chapter about Czech sociological research going into this subject, the results of these studies are presented here. The last part of this thesis contains teaching suggestions for the education of the structure of society at upper secondary schools. The principles of pedagogical constructivism are explained first, followed up by two activities based on the results of the analyses of curriculum documents and the results of sociological research presented earlier. Mediating social classes in television drama Most!

This diploma thesis deals with the media representation of social classes and inequalities in the popular Czech series Most!. It focuses primarily on the conception of classes in Czech society and on aspects of the construction of everyday reality through the series. It also identifies the stereotypes, which have a potential influence on the formation of the viewer's opinions and attitudes. The thesis was created on the basis of a qualitative content analysis of the series with the aid of multimodal analysis, which focuses on linguistic and visual communication of the characters. To enrich this analysis, an element of the type was also added to the analysis. This type provides a comparison the characters with the social types in Czech society. The analysis of the paper was also inspired by the project Divided by Freedom, from the year of 2019, which divided society into several classes. The paper follows this research and class sorting and applies it to the series Most!. This diploma thesis defines social classes, the way in which they are represented and how this representation forms reality through stereotypes. Thanks to the element of type in the analysis, a set of typical characteristics was recognized which connected the series and living world.
Social Class in E.M. Forster's Howards End and in Zadie Smith's On Beauty

This bachelor thesis compares and contrasts the depiction of social class in E.M. Forster's Howards End and Zadie Smith's On Beauty. The theoretical part introduces the concept of social class as well as its portrayal in Edwardian literature and in contemporary British literature and also in the works of E.M. Forster and Zadie Smith. Due to the apparent connection between the two texts, an overview of intertextuality and its functioning in literature is added to the theoretical part. The practical part of the paper interprets On Beauty as a pastiche of Howards End but mainly provides the analysis of the two novels in terms of their view of social stratification, in particular the differences between upper middle class and working class. Construction of student identity of college students whose parents do not have university degree

This bachelor thesis investigates how student identity of college students whose parents do not have university degree is constructed. Aim is to find out how they reflect their past and current experiences in order to understand the meanings they attribute to subjectively important decisions and breakthroughs in the context of university studies, and to capture processes that play a crucial role in constructing their identity focusing the influence of family support and interest. In the theoretical part, I introduced the concept of social class in psychology and the basic theories of social reproduction and mobility within education. Furthermore, the specifics of the Czech education system are characterized, with a particular focus on tertiary education, values gained by family and school, and first-generation university students. Last but not least, I deal with identity, its definition from the point of view of mainstream and social constructivist psychology and its formation in the period of emerging adulthood and during the transition to university. In the empirical part, semi-structured interviews were utilized to collect data. The obtained data is processed qualitatively within interpretative framework using thematic analysis.
