Our population is aging, people live longer. The number of the elderly who are not self-sufficient and need help of other person has been growing. These elderly often do not have a family who could either take care of them or are not able to take care of them. One of the possible solution for such people is to use services of Homes for the Elderly. An important part of care of healthy body is care of psychological (mental) well-being. It is proved that these two areas interact and in the spirit of this interaction, leisure activities in Homes for the Elderly are offered. They offer meaningful use of leisure time to the elderly and also possibility to meet new people and find new friends to spend their leisure time with. The thesis is divided into two parts. The theoretical part deals with theoretical ways and solutions connected with old age, with needs of a human and leisure activities of the elderly and it also deals with social services for these people. It also describes the Home for the Elderly called Kopretina in the town of Plzen, where the research took place. Qualitative research and semi-structured interviews were applied to gather data in the empirical part. The objective of the work was to find out whether the elderly in Kopretina are satisfied with the offer of activation programmes. Three sub-questions were set to answer the main pre-set research question. The main research question led to the confirmation of the objective. The information gathered through the research may be used to improve the offered activities in the Home Kopretina. The research also showed which activity in the Home is wanted.

The mechanism of action of anticancer drug ellipticin in target tissues of its effect
Vranová, Iveta ; Stiborová, Marie (advisor) ; Martínková, Markéta (referee)
Ellipticine is an alkaloid isolated from Apocynaceae plants exhibiting significant antitumor and anti-HIV activities. Cytochromes P450 (CYP) and peroxidases are the enzymes participating in metabolism of ellipticine. This process provides activation and detoxication metabolites of ellipticine. The CYP enzymes, which participate in oxidation of ellipticine in different tissues (liver, lung and kidney) of rat, a model organism simulating the fate of ellipticine in humans have already been identified. In this work, the effects of ellipticine on contents and catalytic activities of CYPs and other components of the mixed-function oxidase (MFO) system in this animal system were studied. For detection of contents of CYPs and other components of the MFO system, spectroscopic and electrochemical methods were used. To determine catalytic activities of CYPs and NADPH:cytochrome P450 reductase, reactions with specific substrates of these enzymes were utilized. The results found in this study demonstrate that expression and catalytic activity of CYP1A is induced by ellipticine in all of the tested organs (liver, kidney and lung) of rats treated with the drug. Moreover in liver, the cytochrome b5 expression is also induced. In addition, in this organ, expression and catalytic activity of CYP3A was increased by...

Charles University in Prague, Faculty of Pharmacy in Hradec Králové Department of biophysics and physical chemistry Candidate: Mgr. Monika Kuchařová Supervisor: Prof. Ing. RNDr. Stanislav Ďoubal, CSc. Title of Doctoral Thesis: The methodology of measurement of biomechanical properties of biological materials As a part of this dissertation thesis a methodology of measurement of mechanical properties of viscoelastic materials was developed. The methodology was then verified and applied in measurement of shoulder-blades of pheasants and in measurement of the trabecular section of human caput femoris in bending and twisting stress, viscoelastic parameters of these materials were also calculated. Results, in the case of human bones, were compared with measurement of body mass density and content of vitamin D. Mechanical behaviour of many biological materials corresponds to the behaviour of so- called viscoelastic body. These materials cannot be categorized simply as solids or liquids. The mechanical behaviour of this type of materials has partially elastic and partially viscose character. Skin, cell walls, bones, numerous structures of internal organs and many other materials belong to this category. In spite of the fact that in physiological conditions biological materials are loaded dynamically, in...

The Practice of Sky Burials in Tibet
Brzoňová, Monika ; Komárek, Stanislav (advisor) ; Berounský, Daniel (referee)
Sky burial is a common funeral practice in Tibet. A human corpse is cut into small pieces and placed on a mountaintop (called durtro), exposing it to the elements and animals - especially to birds of prey. In Tibetan the practice is known as jhator (Tibetan bya gtor), which literally means "giving alms to the gods". As the name implies, jhator is considered an act of generosity: the deceased and his/her surviving relatives are providing food to sustain living beings. Because the majority of Tibetans adhere to Buddhism, which teaches reincarnation, generosity and compassion for all beings are important virtues or paramita in Buddhism. So the function of the sky burial is simply the disposal of the remains. In much of Tibet the ground is too hard and rocky to dig a grave, and with fuel and timber scarce, a sky burial is often more practical than cremation. This graduation theses enlarge about this ritual in all his connotation, i.e. historical, religious, culturology and philosophical meanings. It also enlighten about Tibetan approach to the death and funeral services in Tibet. The primal problem is the phenomena of sky burial and it's course, sense and other overlaps (like astrology, medicine, ethics, enviromentalism, iconography and so on).

Theory of Non-Democratic Regimes (Barma)
Tejrovská, Pavla ; Kubišová, Zuzana (referee) ; Stracený, Josef (advisor)
The aim of this thesis is to describe the current theories concerning undemocratic regimes. It focuses on individual authors, on the subjects they treat and the typology of undemocratic systems. The first part of the work defines the basic terminology and theory of undemocratic systems itself. The main point of interest is to develop an appropriate characteristic that would distinguish two most important types of undemocratic regimes - authoritarian and totalitarian. The second part deals with the practical analysis of a particular example of a non-establishment state - Burma - and approaches the atmosphere prevailing in the country. Included are also diary records of a journey across the country. Finally, the work trys to bring answers to questions of what, even in the technically advanced 21st century, allows the possiblity of existence of undemocratic systems that violate the most basic human rights; why the citizens do not dispose of the power to alter the situation; why, despite of their attempts, the most powerful countries remain unsuccessful in their deeds; and finally, whether there are any ways of changing the system. The appendices also include authentic photographs taken in Burma. The thesis has shown that the theoretical approaches as well as the real forms of undemocratic systems are varied....
