The structure of human being and the possibility of mystical experience. A Thomistic view.
Peroutka, David ; Kohut, Pavel Vojtěch (referee) ; Sousedík, Stanislav (referee)
David Peroutka The structure of human being and the possibility of mystical experience. A Thomistic view In the present investigation I try to explicate the Thomistic concept of soul as a principle of psychosomatic unity of man. Among powers or "potencies" of the soul we find "inner senses" which are to be well differentiated from the intellect. Such a distinction allows us to proof the spirituality of human soul and also to explain the possibility and the nature of spiritual and mystical experience. A paradigmatic testimony of such an experience we find in the writings of S. Teresa of Avila. In order to interpret her spiritual texts we need also well understand the distinction between the sensory appetitive powers, i.e. emotive powers, and the spiritual appetitive power, which is the will. Teresa does not lead us from the sphere of intellect to that of emotionality, as commonly seen, rather in the opposite sense: the center of gravity of spiritual life moves from the sphere of imagination and emotionality to that of the intellect and the will. In the contemplative prayer the will is fixed in the mystery of God through mediation of divinely illuminated intellect. And it is the will that engages, finally, also the sensory part of the soul.
The structure of human being and the possibility of mystical experience A Thomistic view
Peroutka, David ; Sousedík, Stanislav (referee) ; Červenková, Denisa (referee)
The Structure of human being and the possibility of mystical experience. A thomistic view The psychological structure of human being can be seen as a potential for the mystical experience. In this psychological sense we expound the mystical testimony of Saint Teresa of Ávila (1515-1582) using the thomistic anthropological theory (whose terminology - to say the least - was used also by Teresa herself). Teresa says that it is the faculty of will which is occupied with loving in the mystical contemplation. Since the will is today usually understood rather as a capacity to make (and maintain) decisions, we have to interpret somehow the Teresian peculiar sentence. Thomistic theory permits us to conceive the will as the spiritual capacity to love. Moreover, Thomas Aquinas left us an account of the impact of will on the emotionality. The mystical experience does not remain only in purely spiritual sphere of the soul, it "overflows" in the sensual (emotional), even in the bodily area. Finally, the tomistic distinctions between imagination and intellection, between reasoning and intellection and between active and passive intellect allow us to explain how the intellect can be conceived as a capacity for the mystical knowledge.
The Idea of Desert in Modern Arabic Short Stories
Šifaldová, Gabriela ; Ondráš, František (advisor) ; Oliverius, Jaroslav (referee)
This thesis examines the theme of desert as literary environment in modern Arabic short story. The aim of this thesis is to analyze the short story's texts dealing with the desert. This topic will be approached in terms of semantic-symbolic analysis, which will be matched by the relationship between nature and the environment as a landscape, and nature as a source of mythological and fantastic ideas, which are reflected in the life of literary figures and story construction. The work includes a search for an answer to the question of what is the diference between the author who has direct access to the desert and the other one who deals with urban or other environments according to the geographic origin. The work is divided into three parts, which then develop symbolic, mythological and anthropological analysis of selected texts. Key words: desert, Ibrahim al-Koni, symbols, mysticism, modern Arabic literature

Theology of Hildegarda of Bingen
ŠIPKA, Magdaléna
Dissertation work 'Theology of Hildegard von Bingen' introduces theology of this medieval abatyss, teacher, preacher and holy woman. First part of this work is a summary of Hildegard's life and it also outlines the nature of her work. It is followed by explanation of Hildegard von Bingen's position as a female theologist. Further, the work offers an overview of intepretations of Hildegard's theology in the works of great theologians interested in mysticism of twentieth century. Namely the legacy of Hildegard von Bingen in the works of Evellin Underhill, Dorothee Soelle and Matthew Fox. To understand Hildegard's theology it is vital to understand her theological method and the way her visionary works are constructed. Therefore next chapter deals with Hildegard von Bingen as a mystic and her use of knowledge and experience as a source of her mystical visions. Last part is about Hildegard's theology itself. Theological Mysticism and Symbolism in the Piece "Méditations sur le Mystere de la Sainte Trinité" by Olivier Messiaen
Salvová, Pavla ; POPELKA, Josef (advisor) ; TŮMA, Jaroslav (referee)
The general attribute of Olivier Messiaen´s music is not only his specific musical language, which experiments with time, rhythm, colour, finds inspiration in birdsong, Gregorian chant and music of the exotic lands, but mainly the existence of a non-musical message. The first part of my thesis is introductory. It includes the description of Messiaen´s life and early musical influences, the nature of his musical style, his general musical aims, and an overview of his most important works. In the centre of my effort is the thematic analysis of Messiaen´s late organ cycle Méditations sur le Mystère de la Sainte Trinité (Meditations on the Mystery of the Holy Trinity). That is preceded with an introduction of the background of the piece, sources of inspiration and symbolism used. The main aim is to explore the complexity of Messiaen´s musical and thematic thinking, and to understand the message of the musical material.
Buddha´s Dharma Reflected in His Life, Comparison of Chosen Biographies of Gautama Buddha
VRBA, Václav
My thesis deals with Buddha´s life and message. I compare the approaches of four authors who wrote monographies on Buddha´s life and philosophy. K. Armstrong, former catholic cloistress, interprets Buddha from the Christian position of love and compassion and sees Buddha´s contribution mainly in suppression of egoism. E. Bondy, Marxist philosopher, emphesises the racional and practical aspect of Buddha´s message but criticises mystical aspects of his teaching. M. Carrithers, anthropologist and religionist, analyses the origin of desire leading to suffering and the way out of suffering through vip assana meditation. V. Zotz, Austrian historian and philosopher, analyzes the principle of samsara and sees Buddha as a helping pilgrim, who applied his dharma in solving people´s problems. Except to Bondy´ book I find all the works very interesting and inspiring, because they enrich Buddha´s teaching in their own original way.
