Classicism in Czech architecture of the 19th and 20th centuries

The thesis is aimed at the subject of classicism in a broader sense of this term and is based on the classicism period architecture in the Czech Republic. The introductory chapter intends to briefly and independently define and clarify the terms classical, classicism and neoclassicism, deal with the shaping of the classical canon in Europe and outline the evolution of classical features in the history of the Czech architecture in the European context. In separate chapters the thesis systematically follows the matters of classicism in the first half of the 19th century, in the periods of pure and late historicism and early and paramount modernism. Special attention has been paid to the matters of classicism in the Czech thoughts on art in the interwar period and during the German occupation. Having analysed the classicism-style tendencies in the socialist realism architecture the thesis identifies basic classicism-style aspirations in the 2nd half of the 20th century and in the beginning of the 21st century. The final chapter is dedicated to the identification of the main overall specifics of classicism in the Czech architecture based on a list of examples.
Grave, Tombstone, Graveyard. The Range of Motifs of the Czech Painting of the 19th Century

(in English) This thesis called Grave, Tombstone, Graveyard. The Range of Motifs of the Czech Painting of the 19th Century is based on the analysis of paintings, drawings and graphics made by Czech authors throughout the 19th century. Artists worked with funeral motifs in different ways and these will be presented in different case studies. Some painters were fascinated by these subjects and they turned their attention to them systematically and repeatedly throughout their career. Other artists worked with funeral motifs rarely, although significantly. Artists integrated motifs of graves, monuments and cemeteries to their pieces of art for different purposes; this was connected with the interest of Romanticism in aesthetic anomalies and mystery, with their personal experience and feelings. Artists were also interested in genre scenes that were situated in cemeteries. Funeral motifs can be found in illustrated journals as well. Their aim was to document the specific place and as to symbolically express the finality of the life. The pieces of art will be presented in the context of the burial rites and literature of the 19th century. This phenomenon was also reflected by foreign artists, some of them will be also mentioned in the thesis as an analogy to the Czech works.
Alois Klar (1763-1833). Between the Enlightenment and Romanticism

The Development of Lord Byron's Satire

1 ABSTRACT As the aim of the thesis is to follow the development of Lord Byron's satirical voice, I have chosen to analyze three of his shorter satirical works (the analysis of Don Juan is omitted on purpose, since it has been thoroughly examined by many scholars) significantly different from each other both in form and content, and thus allowing me to map Byron's satirical technique and to contrast the texts. The following works will be analyzed: English Bards and Scotch Reviewers (1809), Beppo: A Venetian Story (1817) and The Vision of Judgment (1822). To understand satire it is essential not only to analyze the texts, but also to put them into context, which will also be part of the discussion. English Bards and Scotch Reviewers - his first published satire - presents Byron's sharp opinion on his contemporaries (including the Lake poets) and serves as the poet's defence against literary reviewers. It follows the tradition of the Neo-Classical satire represented by e.g. Alexander Pope whose legacy is very apparent in English Bards. Beppo marks a new approach - it shows a strong Italian influence - not only is the anecdote set in Italy and thus allows the author to satirize both Italian and English society, but Byron also adopts the form of ottava rima typical of Italian literature. Carmen and Colomba, femmes fatales?

The aim of the bachelor thesis Carmen and Colomba as femmes fatales? is to describe the origin and expansion of the myth of the femme fatale across the 19th century French literature. Through the analysis of the two main female characters Carmen and Colomba of the writer Prosper Mérimée, it is possible to illustrate the general applicability of this myth. The first part of the thesis is dedicated to the definition of the term femme fatale, its expansion in the 19th century and also to the question concerning the relevance of this literary myth. The following chapter covers the analysis of the two mentioned female characters by defining the types of their male victims and their closer analysis. The last chapter provides a space to discuss the development of the myth of the femme fatale over the second half of 19th century, primarily in the piece Les Diaboliques of Barbey d'Aurevilly, but also in the crystallization of femme fatale into the mythological-biblical based figure of Salomé in the end of the 19th century.
Alfred de Musset and his dramatic work

The purpose of this study is to define different types of love in selected theatre plays of Alfred de Musset. I also partly focused in his plays on social questions, negative characters and unconventional theatrical methods. At first I introduced the work and important moments of writer's life which were often an inspiration for his stories and characters. I also outlined the brief history of romantic theatre and finally analyzed the theatre plays. The selected analyzes include the extracts illustrating the types of loves or unique traits of characters. The contribution of this study consists in defining the original method the author used to describe the profundity of the feelings of his characters. The myth of Orpheus in the poetry of the 19th and 20th century

This bachelor thesis The myth of Orpheus in the french poetry of 19th and 20th century deals with the mythological references left in the work of significant authors of the modern French poetry. In the first part of the thesis, the Pre-literary and literary versions of the ancient myth of Orpheus are mentioned. We are focusing on the writings of Ovid and Virgil which are analysed. In the following chapters of the second part, constituent motifs are looked up in works of chosen authors from the period of romanticism to the forties of 20th century in connection with particular literary context. The specifical usage of the myth and his changes are observed and described. In the third part; all authors' adaptations are compared also with indication the importance of ancient mythology in the modern literature.

The bacheloral thesis The comparation of the chosen aspects of Kytice by Karel Jaromír Erben and Ballady i romanse by Adam Mickiewicz will in the opening part describe the complex characterization of ballads on the both primary texts. Next will introduce authors and their works. In the following part the bacheloral thesis will focus for example on the comparation of the literary motives, the characterizations of the real and supernatural characters, the concept of the death or the motive of character's transformation. The bacheloral thesis will focus on description of the atmosphere and time, in which the ballads take place. Afterwards the thesis will be concerned for example with the motive of guilt and punishment or the character of women-heroines.
