Trunečková, Daniela ; Novák, Arnošt (advisor) ; Hájek, Roman (referee)
This diploma thesis on Representation of the problem of climate change in the print media is a content analysis of Czech quality daily newspapers, namely Hospodářské noviny, Lidové noviny, Mladá fronta DNES and Právo. It deals with the way the selected daily newspapers presented debate on global climate change in 2013-2014. The theoretical part informs readers about the basic concepts and definitions and introduces them to the problem. The empirical part answers the question of whether the media coverage of global climate change in Czech quality daily newspapers is consistent with scientific findings of the international climate discourse represented by Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) or whether it relies equally on opinions of the small group of so called climate skeptics who question the general consensus of the scientific comunity regarding the causes and consequences of climate change or the need of adequate measures. The results of research indicated that most of analyzed articles informed about climate change the same way as the main climatological research. The largest number of skeptical articles appeared in Lidové noviny. A considerable number of articles didn't comment on the causes of climate change, their seriousness or decisions regarding action.

The Media Image of the Campaign "Děkujeme, odcházíme" in Selected Czech Daily Press
Koppitz, Radim ; Křeček, Jan (advisor) ; Hájek, Roman (referee)
The Media Image of the Campaign "Děkujeme, odcházíme" in Selected Czech Daily Press Abstract The aim of the thesis is to analyze an overall image of the "Děkujeme, odcházíme" ("Thank you, we are leaving") campaign in two Czech dailies - Lidové noviny and Hospodářské noviny. The protest campaign run by medical unions resulted from the fact that doctors in Czech hospitals had not been satisfied both with their salary and working conditions. The unions asked a professional PR agency to manage the campaign, which is why the campaign was in the end much more effective and successful than any of the previous attempts. Quantitative content analysis has been chosen as a method for this research. Content of dailies is being analyzed from several aspects - overall coverage of the topic, its development over time, analysis of how media presented key motives for doctors' wanting to leave the hospitals, analysis of negative aspects of doctors' leaving and their development in time, evaluation of balanced access of conflict's key parties and their actors to the media and also an analysis of preferences of the media articulated via opinion texts. The research covers the period from May 2010, the actual beginning of the campaign, to April 2011, i.e. - just two months after the peak of the campaign. Theoretical part...
Economic Crisis: Media Representation and Public Opinion
Picková, Martina ; Jeřábek, Hynek (advisor) ; Remr, Jiří (referee)
This thesis deals with the current global recession, its presentation in the media, and the public opinion on the economic situation in the Czech Republic. It is based on the theory of agenda-setting. Content analysis is used to examinate the intensity of attention of two different journals paid to the subject of the recession in the observed period September 2007 - December 2011, with a special focus on December 2008. The objects of the current study are two Czech nation-wide journals: the economic newspaper Hospodářské noviny and the tabloid newspaper Blesk. The study shows that the economic journal presents the recession more intensively, from a more general point of view, and questions the causes of the recession. The tabloid concentrates on the Czech Republic, writes about the recession primarily in the context of non-economical news (especially sport), and does not use the mechanisms typical for tabloids as much as expected. A secondary analysis of the outcomes of public opinion surveys examines the readerships of these journals separately. The economic expectations of the readers of the economic journal correspond with the intensity of attention paid by this journal to the recession, but only in the first half of the analysed period. The expectations of the tabloid readers correspond with...
Prague in the czech media
Smlsal, Matěj ; Osvaldová, Barbora (advisor) ; Čeňková, Jana (referee)
This bachelor essay investigates how the most important Czech daily newspapers inform about regional affairs in Prague. The Mlada fronta DNES daily dedicates a few pages of every edition to local news. Every month it also publishes a stand-alone supplement in the capital and six times a year a luxurious life-style magazine. The Hospodarske noviny daily on the other hand reports more from Prague than about Prague, claims the editor-in-chief Petr Sabata, at least since the regional supplement has been discontinued. One of the other newspapers included in this research is Pravo, which dedicates a double-page every day to local news. Then there are Blesk, where the reader can find one or two pages of local news and the Prazsky denik newspaper. In the first chapter I introduce the mentioned newspapers. In the second chapter, I analyze the content of the dailies in a selected week. I conclude that the most news about Prague are brought by Prazsky denik and Mlada fronta DNES. This result is confirmed by the subsequent analysis of how each of the dailies reports about selected events in Prague in 2012. The Prague Pride, the second round of the Senate elections in Prague 8 and the Easter markets on the Old Town Square were discussed in the greatest detail in Prazsky denik and Mlada fronta DNES, but also in...

Obenbergerová, Linda ; Křeček, Jan (advisor) ; Kyjonková, Petra (referee)
Diploma thesis "A Reflection on the Question of Single European Currency Adoption in the Czech Press" deals with an analysis of media picture of the transition of the Czech Republic to the common currency euro in Czech media. With the help of the quantitative method of content analysis and the qualitative method of grounded theory, articles from the dailies Hospodářské noviny and Právo are being analysed. The sample includes articles from the beginning of May 2004, the accession of the Czech Republic to the European Union, until the end of April 2011. Quantitative content analysis enables comparison of both of the periodicals by means of organization and general summary of quantifiable data from the articles. The method of grounded theory regards the examined collection as a whole and provides detailed analysis of the sample in order to identify hidden structures of the text. The focus of this work is articulation of the media image of the European common currency adoption in the Czech Republic, based on the partial outcomes of the research project. This text as an extension of the bachelor thesis "The Image of Euro Adoption in Czech Press" uses its outputs in addition to the revision of the research with a broadened sample, mapping seven years of development of the topic. Consequently, scope for...

Měšťanová, Kateřina ; Vochocová, Lenka (advisor) ; Reifová, Irena (referee)
The French President Nicolas Sarkozy is presented in the long term as the head of state with a strong media influence and strong media manipulation ability. This tendency is moreover not rare in the field of politics, and it can have a strong impact on society. That is why it seems appropriate to devote attention to this topic within media studies. The aim of this thesis is to find out, based on the content-study of three Czech national newspapers, how Czech journalists deal with the topic of the French presidency - do they have their specific sources, how do they cope with information from the Élysée Palace, do they use the same sources, do they create stereotypes about Nicolas Sarkozy etc. Qualitative analysis of the articles is supplemented by findings from interviews with the journalists themselves. The thesis has two main parts. In the first one, the overview of the available research in the field of agenda-setting and news coverage sociology is offered, literature is also presented, which deals with the influence of President Sarkozy and the issues affecting French journalists' work.
