The transforming power of places: the impact of the spatial setting on characters in Graham Greene's novel The Heart of the Matter
Shánělová, Jindra ; Nováková, Soňa (referee) ; Beran, Zdeněk (advisor)
The English novelist Graham Greene kept a journal for most of his life, except when it might threaten his safety.1 There he captured both mundane as well as extraordinary or otherwise noteworthy moments as a reminder in case he may one day run out of ideas for his fiction. As it happened, however, during his wartime service in African Sierra Leone, the danger of keeping any personal records could have posed too great a threat to himself and his professional interests that, as he came to regret some years later, he had to rely on his memory in order to put together scattered shreds of memories of this particular time of his life which became the main source for one of his masterpieces, the 1948 novel The Heart of the Matter. In it he captures the paradoxical situation of Europeans who for professional reasons inhabit these distant and alien corners of the Earth. There he places the protagonist, Major Scobie, and others in order to construe a drama of as common life as we know it, only spiced up by the African setting as a dislocating element, a background for the kaleidoscope of human problems that are correspondingly tinted by the tropical heat. It is the purpose of this paper to show the workings of the spatial setting as an inseparable part of the novel as well as its inevitable impact on the characters....

Hypnosis in pain management
Červenka, Jan ; Kebza, Vladimír (referee) ; Šípek, Jiří (advisor)
This study has proved, based on 8 case studies of patients suffering from chronic pain, that hypnosis based on cricksonian techniques is a mcthod which can lead in some cased to a significant improvement in patienťs condition. This improvement can be dueto reduction of perceived pain as such or in decrease of suffering or fear and anxiety related to pain. This study indicatcs that if the pain has a concrete physiological source, it is impossible to completely remove it, nevertheless it is possible to influence the suffering or fear it brings. There also secms to be a specific personality setting that can lead to a failure in the use of hypnotherapy.

Norwegian future tense (with emphasis on "vil" and "kommer til å")
Kajerová, Kristýna ; Svevad, Thor (referee) ; Vrbová, Jaroslava (advisor)
Many researchers doubt the existence of a pure expression of future in terms of language. They state that it is difficult to express with words something which has not happened yet: The future might never be completely predictable. Another reason for this is that the auxiliary verbs which are used in order to refer to the future are classified as modal verbs. I.e. they primarily carry modality. The verbs in question here are skal and vil. It is to be noted that some researchers also connote modality to the expression kommer til . The verb skal can carry the meaning of "necessity", "command", "promise", "rumour" or "assumption". Skal expresses futhermore pre-planned actions. Please note, that it is especially difficult to distinguish between the connotations of "pre-planned action" and "rumour" or "assumption" if the sentence has a 3. person subject. The verb vil can carry the meaning of "wish" or "assumption" about the present or the future and "prediction". We could, in case of the meaning "prediction" talk about the time references Th and Tu, but it is not always very easy to distinguish between the reference to the future and the meaning "wish". This is especially true if the respective sentence has a 1. person or 3. person subject. One of the most common forms to express a future reference is to use the...

Investigation and Modelling of Concrete Carbonation
Rovnaníková, Markéta ; Keršner, Zbyněk (referee) ; Bajza, Adolf (referee) ; Havlica, Jaromír (advisor)
The corrosion of steel reinforcement is probably the most frequent type of degradation of reinforced concrete structures. Reinforcing bars are protected from corrosion by a thin iron oxide layer which is formed on their surface due to a high alkalinity of the surrounding concrete. Corrosion may start when this layer is destroyed (i) either by chloride ion penetration (when the concentration of dissolved chloride at the depth of the reinforcing steel exceeds a critical value) or (ii) by a reduction in the pH value of pore solution to values below 9.5. Such a reduction in alkalinity is the result of carbonation of the Ca(OH)2 in the concrete mass, i.e. of its reaction with the atmospheric CO2. The main aim of this work is an experimental investigation and modelling of carbonation process. The effect of relative humidity, curing period and replacement of Portland cement by supplementary cementing materials (SCM - fly ash, blast furnace slag and metakaolin) on carbonation process has been studied. Calcium hydroxide content in the presence of SCM and their pozzolanic activities have been also determined. Furthermore, lots of parametric studies and comparison of carbonation models have been provided. The software tools based on the introduced models and considering the input data to be statistically independent random variables have been described and used for other parametric studies.

L'analyse expérimentale des paramtres dynamiques du rail grille
Podolník, Adam ; Tomandl, Vladimír (referee) ; Smutný, Jaroslav (advisor)
In terms of deciding on the appropriate use of the railway superstructure assemblies in both the recommendations arising from the theoretical analysis (modeling), as well as recommendations obtained under static and dynamic testing of the finished product play an important role. Such tests can then be applied in the laboratory or in the field. The thesis will be devoted to operational testing of selected track grid structures in situ. For measurement purposes an appropriate measuring point will be chosen and the methodology of measurement will be proposed. In terms of track geometry sections in curves will be selected. On the basis of tests carried out dynamic parameters of structures will be determined. To their evaluation suitable mathematical system will be chosen. It assumes the use of mathematical methods in time and frequency areas. In the thesis there will also be a comparison of the parameters of the tested structures. Based on the measurements it will be a source of recommendations for the practice.

Scintillation SE Detector with Controlled Gas Flow for VP SEM
Kozák, Josef ; Neděla, Vilém (referee) ; Jirák, Josef (advisor)
This master’s thesis deals with a design and optimization of an experimental scintillation secondary electron detector for the environmental scanning electron microscope and with a description of a detector operation principle. The experiment is founded on simulations of a gas flow in detector inner sections and on simulations of secondary electron trajectories in electrostatic fields of the detector. On the basis of the simulations, new solutions of the detector designs are proposed. For these designs, same simulations as previous are performed and designs that seem to be feasible for the secondary electron detection in environmental scanning electron microscope are selected.

Common Rail System in Passenger Cars
Šiška, Adam ; Svída, David (referee) ; Dundálek, Radim (advisor)
Bachelor thesis is focused on the Common Rail system. On the whole this work shows that the Common Rail system is one of the top system in the automobile industry. It is thus clear that the system conforms to all current requirements, which must be taken into account when designing the car. Therefore, this bachelor thesis focuses mainly on the description of this system. When closer examination of this issue, I also concluded that the combined injection units as such are able to cope with the Common Rail system.

At problems of regular and irregular - chaotic motions in faintly and strongly nonlinear gearing systems
Hortel, Milan ; Škuderová, Alena
The dynamic force is the basis for the minimalization of mass and measures of engineering structures. Gear pair models which mostly approximate the real fact lead to the solution and analysis of nonlinear differential equations with time variable structure.

Assessment of T-stress values using finite element method
Seitl, Stanislav ; Hutař, Pavel ; Knésl, Zdeněk
The common used procedures for calculation values of T-stress are presented by using finite element method in this contribution. Such calculational procedures, that make possible to estimate T-stress by using comparison of analytical and numerical solution stress and strain near crack tip, are presented. The aim of contribution is provide survey these procedures and points to their advantages and disadvantage and in this way we intend to possible users the endeavourer orientation in this realm. Contribution is appended with practical examples of calculation of T-stress values.
