Education of children-foreigners in primary schools in Prague
Dražďáková, Lenka ; Veselý, Arnošt (advisor) ; Mouralová, Magdalena (referee)
The number of immigrants has been increasing in the Czech Republic. Along with adult immigrants come also their children and this causes an increase of foreigners in Czech schools. In this diploma thesis it is examined, in what way Prague primary schools cope with the increase of children foreigners in their classrooms. Through interviews and questionnaire survey it is observed what opinions and beliefs are taken by representatives of primary schools in Prague on the issue of foreigners in education, whether they have any specific conceptions that focus on helping foreigners with integration into the Czech school system and at the same time into the majority society. Considering the fact that the process of integration is complicated and during the process a number of obstacles usually occur, it depends not only on the activities of each particular school, but also on the degree of support from the state, and on a child-foreigner himself and on his family, whether the process of integration will eventually be successful or not. For these reasons in the diploma thesis there is also examined the legislative framework defining the issue of education and integration of children-foreigners, financial and methodological support for schools by the Ministry of Education, and the role of children-foreigners and...

Gay fatherhood. Expression of Activism in the Czech Context?
Ciprová, Kristýna ; Sokolová, Věra (advisor) ; Kolářová, Kateřina (referee)
This thesis elaborates on the concept of gay fatherhood, which has been so far insufficiently researched and discussed phenomenon, especially in the Czech Republic. The thesis explores attitudes of interviewed gay men towards questions of gay fatherhood. In-depth semi-structural interviews with 30 gay men investigated in what ways the matters of gay fatherhood are constructed in the Czech context; where and how the conceptions about gay fatherhood emerge and how they are maintained and/or transformed. In general, an important factor affecting one's desire to have children is prevailing institutional context. Institutional barriers and obstacles to having children that are systematically constructed by society, affect not only the mainstream population, but also (and above all) gay population. Therefore, building on review of relevant academic texts, the thesis focuses on a comparison of the Czech institutional context with the Scandinavian and Spanish one. Comparison of different models of enforcement of legislation concerning same-sex partnerships reveals key factors that enable institucionalization of same-sex partnerships/families. One of these factors was activism that became a conceptual framework of the thesis. The last chapter of theoretical part is therefore focused on formation of new social...

Islam and status of women in Tunisia
Kratochvílová, Anna ; Barša, Pavel (advisor) ; Slačálek, Ondřej (referee)
This work deals with the position of women in Tunisian society at present, and attempts to put it into the historical, political and religious context of the country. Due to a lack of Czech sources it is supported by foreign (francophone) sources. Tunisia offers an interesting exploration both from the perspective of the current position of women and also due to the circumstances involved in its formation. Tunisia is ahead of its maghreb neighbors as far as women's rights are concerned. This is a result of a combination of the political fortune, courage and skill of Habib Bourguiba, Tunisia's first president, combined with favorable socio-economic conditions. Tunisia obtained as much benefit as possible from its historical dependence on France. Apart from that, due to its relatively trouble-free acquisition of independence, development during the first few years of independence was not slowed down.. On the other hand, Tunisia is a land of contrast. Tunisian women have gained freedom, in remarkable measure for an Arabic country, but the thinking of the people often remains far away from the legislative measures of the government.. This bachelor thesis is divided into four parts. The first part outlines the impact of Islam on Tunisian society in order to show the divergence between Bourguiba's and the common...

The Return of Refugees and Internally Displaced Persons in Bosnia and Hercegovina after Dayton
Šimák, Jakub ; Tejchman, Miroslav (advisor) ; Králová, Kateřina (referee)
This master thesis deals with activities of the international community concerning the refugee question and their impact on the process and current state of the post-war returns of refugees as well as internally displaced persons (IDPs) on the territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina during the period 1995-2010. The author analyzes and critically assesses the overall strategy of international organizations and particular implemented programs, whose conception was changing over time. The aim is to determine causes of such strategic changes and their interconnectedness with the return. Fifteen years after the end of the war, the author attempts to examine the socioeconomic situation of the returnees and the qualitative aspect of the return process. The main argument of the thesis is that the international community did not succeed in fulfilling the goals stipulated in Annex 7 of the Dayton Peace Agreement. Although over one million of refugees and IDPs returned to their places of origin, the physical return has not been accompanied by a "harmonious reintegration" within the local societies. The international community focused on the issues of property legislation, restitution and reconstruction that have - despite their importance - only partly tackled the complex process of returns. The unsatisfactory conditions...

A Woman's Last Name at Marriage: a Study of the Mechanisms of maintaining Patronymy and Patrilineality
Komanická, Daniela ; Kolářová, Kateřina (advisor) ; Valdrová, Jana (referee)
A woman's last name at marriage is a study of the mechanisms of maintaining patronymy and patrilinearity in Czech and Slovak society through the practice of changing a woman's name at marriage. By analyzing a sample of internet discussions in wedding websites (i.e. internet sites that focus on the issue of woman's family name at marriage) I am challenging this gender structured practice, which I feel disadvantages women and privileges men. The research starts from theoretical concepts of gender studies and uses discursive analysis as a method to help reveal the mechanisms of function and maintenance of a woman's last name change at marriage. Analyzing the comments in these discussions, I was primarily interested in the attitude of the website participants towards the last name as symbolic source of one aspect of identity. In the second part of my analysis, I follow up with the dynamics stemming from the direct exchange of website discussion participants with the issue of woman's last name. My research is concerned with the historic emergence of the issue of woman's last name at marriage, the gender view of Slovak and Czech legislation dealing with the woman's last name at marriage, and my own location - all of which I see as an important part of feminist research. Key words: birth name, change of (woman's)...

Civil Associations in Belarus (1994 - 2005). Use of Legislation to Limit Freedom of Association
Vojtíšková, Kristýna ; Zilynskyj, Bohdan (advisor) ; Marian, Jan (referee)
Since the beginning of an authoritarian rule in half of the 1990s most news heard about Belarus have been linked to persistent effort of the ruling elite to silence voices of disagreement inside the Belarusian society. The purpose of this essay is to identify how this effort evinces in the non-government non-profit sphere, particularly in the legal documents dealing with civic associations and their use by the state bodies. I argue that not all civic organizations experience the same level of violation of their right to association and that certain means used to diminish the NGOs did not meet their goals and led to unpredicted and unwanted consequences.

Problematika zaměstnávání žen
Zumrová, Šárka ; Šikýř, Martin (advisor) ; Najmanová, Jana (referee)
Subject of this diploma work covers the employment of women, which is related to unequal position of women in the job market and their discrimination. The overview of legislation as well as history of development concerning the employment of women in the job market from the point of view in the Czech Republic and abroad is introduced. Women, which currently take the same part of the work force as men, are more affected with unemployment. There is also a difference in the incomes between men and women for the same job and work segregation, women face more difficult career promotion etc. Reasons for this unequal position can be seen in the sociable perception of the traditional women's position which is very difficult to change in spite of the existing legislation forbidding discrimination. The inquiry made between selected women is included in my work and aims to find out practical experiences in this area. On a basis of evaluated facts, where it has been discovered that women meet the unequal position in the job market and discrimination, I have proposed provisions which should lead to the gradual change of the unequal position of the women in the job market in order to determine the coequality not only in the legislation or the company's internal instructions, but also in the society where the coequality should be treated as most wanted without any doubts.
