Suicide yesterday and today
Sekerák, Richard ; Samek, Tomáš (advisor) ; Lánský, Ondřej (referee)
In this diploma thesis Suicide yesterday and today I focus on the topis of suicide in the point of view of social studies. The thesis is divided into two parts. In the first part, I analyze three theoretical works dealing with suicide and suicide, namely the works of Emil Durkheim, Tomas Garrigue Masaryk and the collective works of Luděk Brož, Daniel Münster and other theorists. In the first part, I conclude that in the theoretical field there is no consensus on the interpretation of the causes of suicide. In the second part of my work I compare this three theoretical works and I also present the conclusions of the theoretical probe, which I developed in this work. This part is divided into thematic chapters according to possible causes of suicide, which I came to mainly based on the theoretical part. In the second part, I try to connect and compare scientific-theoretical views on suicide and unscientific views. The aim of the theoretical probe was not to find answers to questions related to the issue of suicide, its aim was to bring new perspectives to the discussion concerning suicide. Key words Suicide, suicidologie, Masaryk, Brož, Durkheim, suicide reasons
How selected online media report about death of czech athletes?
Řehák, Matěj ; Macková, Veronika (advisor) ; Chladová, Marta (referee)
Czech football players František Rajtoral, David Bystroň, Pavel Pergl and hockey player Adam Svoboda have all lost their lives in time period between years 2017 a 2019. All of the mentioned deaths were caused by suicide. Death and suicide discourses are both very sensitive topics in media, although they are quite common. There are not even much handbooks or manuals how to cover these incidents properly. Ethical and moral codex plays a much bigger role here because of sensitive perception of death and suicide in society. Media still try to be more popular than their rivals, thus they turn to tabloidization even in reports about deaths of athletes. These incidents meet usual news values as negativity, surprise and relationship to elite people, so they are usually very popular. Responsible journalism and cautiousness are necessary in these cases, otherwise there is a risk of misinterpretation of reality between media consumers and also have negative impact on people suffering from suicidal tendencies. Research of this essay focuses on analyzing the articles about mentioned sportsmen, which should reveal problematic aspects of professional news reporting about these kinds of events.
Hope and Meaning of Human Existence: Comparing the Approach to Human Existence of Gabriel Marcel and Albert Camus
Klimešová, Pavlína ; Drozenová, Wendy (advisor) ; Hogenová, Anna (referee)
73 Abstract The first part of my dissertation deals with the philosophy of Gabriel Marcel. It begins with the basic information about the philosopher as well as with his thinking placed within the context of the philosophy's history. Next step is Mr. Marcel's ideas about the feeling of the essence of life which is significant to experience in one man's life in order to set off the journey of englightenment. The feeling of the essence of life is unfortunately being silenced in nowadays people. After that I introduce the philosopher's conception of the imprisonment of a human being. This imprisonment is the cornerstone of his explanation of the metaphysics of hope. At the end of the first part I submit the power and the importance of hope in a human's state of mind which can be so stable that even the death of the beloved doesn't mean the end of hope. As mentioned before, the second part begins with the information about Mr. Albert Camus and I also put his philosophy in the context of the history. The most important step is to introduce his feeling of the futility without which the philosophy of Mr. Camus cannot be understood. The next vital part is his understanding and asking of one man's life relevance and also the philosopher's perception of a suicide. The cost of human life is the focal point of...
The Analysis of Representation of Suicide and Self-Mutilation in Popular Culture in Years 1999-2019
Nainová, Victoria ; Vochocová, Lenka (advisor) ; Bednařík, Petr (referee)
The master thesis is focusing on the representation of suicides and self-mutilation in American production movies and television in the year 1999-2019. The thesis aims to find out, how are these phenomena shown and with whom popular culture connects them. The theoretical part is dealing with social and media construction of reality, stereotype, stigmatization, and clearing the concepts and definitions of phenomena. For better understanding this part also includes a short presentation of socially deviant behavior since examined phenomena are part of it. The analysis was made based on qualitative content analysis and completed with short quantitative analysis for sociodemographic comparison with available real data. The sample contains 23 motion pictures as are films and series. Based on them and with processes of grounded theory the coding was done, typology was made and pointed out findings with whom American production connects these phenomena and how they represent them in popular culture. Those findings are important for their relations to media construction of reality as non-experts can perceive the way it is represented for their own.

The death of a loved one is currently a very common topic, and it is important for a social worker to keep it in mind. This thesis is called "The Phenomena of Death in a Social Worker's Job". The theoretical part was made by using analysed relevant literature, chosen by snowballing sampling. This thesis is divided into three chapters. The first two chapters focus on the theory and definition of death, anticipation and sudden death, suicide, mourning and options to help the survivors. The third chapter contains the practical part, with research data, including charts and graphical interpretation. The goal of this empiric research is to use semi-structured online surveys to answer the main research question: "How do students of the second year of postgraduate study of major SACH at HTF UK feel about their readiness to handle death of their clients and confrontation with survivors during their work?" I was trying to find out whether students at our faculty are considering this topic and how they feel about it. The research shows that students do not feel prepared to encounter these topics during their work. The most important part of the thesis I consider a subchapter, which contains interviews with social workers who have already encountered deaths and survivors during their work. I am using these...
Chrysippus and Augustine on suicide
Golatová, Hana ; Chavalka, Jakub (advisor) ; Šenovský, Jakub (referee)
The thesis deals with suicide and topics related to it in the concept of Chrysippus of Soloi and St. Augustine. Despite the differences in their conclusions, both discuss this phenomenon in connection withdissatisfaction with life. They are based on the assumption of the initial inadequacy of human nature and the possibility of attaining happiness through its perfection. Chrysippus believes that under certain conditions suicide can become a reasonable act. The development of rationality allows one to see events from a universal perspective and to free oneself from dependence on external objects that produce passions including adherence to life. The decision to voluntarily end one's life is based on an insight into the course of nature and what is natural to man. Thanks to this knowledge, suicide becomes a virtuous act and a manifestation of harmony with nature. For Augustine, on the other hand, suicide isan expression of human weakness, an inability to cope with the miseries of life and a cowardly escape from suffering. However, he considers suffering to be an integral part of life, hiding in itself the possibility of moral remedy. Suicide manifests human egoism, which is the cause of the original sin, the degradation of the human nature and an barrier on the road to happiness and salvation.
