Kant's Theory of Schematism
Bis, Ondřej ; Kouba, Pavel (advisor) ; Chotaš, Jiří (referee)
The thesis focuses on a chapter from Kant's Critique of Pure Reason, "The Schematism of the Pure Concepts of the Understanding". Kant assumes two independent sources of knowledge, understanding and intuition. These sources need to be overcome, because of their heterogeneity. Schematism is closely related to "The Deduction of the Pure Concepts of the Understanding". That is why the analysis of schemata is preceded by the analysis of this chapter. It shows a more detailed description of a role of intuition with respect to understanding. Firstly, the validity of the categories regarding whatever form of intuition is proved. Secondly, the proof of the validity of the categories regarding specific forms of time and space follows. The chapter on schematism deals with the specific methods by means of which the categories relate to intuition. Kant introduces transcendental schemata bridging the heterogeneity of understanding and intuition. The relation between category and schema is understood as one of analogy. The categories are rules of discursive type of unity of any kind of intuition, whereas schemata are determined as rules of perceptive unity of intuition. Intuition is brought under unity of apperception by means of schemata of imagination. Inseparable part of the thesis is the schematism of...
The Evolution of the notion of a World Soul in Henry More
Joseph, Jacques ; Hladký, Vojtěch (advisor) ; Nejeschleba, Tomáš (referee) ; Hill, James (referee)
The main goal of this thesis is to describe the evolution of the concept of a world soul in the thought of Cambridge Platonist Henry More (1614-1687). However, this topic is discussed within the broader context of early modern philosophy and the birth of modern science. The philosophy of Henry More presents a very interesting confrontation between Renaissance Neo-Platonism and Cartesianism, early modern mechanicism and the newest scientific discoveries of his age, the notion of a world soul being exactly the point where all these thought currents meet. The classical conception of a platonic world soul in More's early thought later becomes the Spirit of Nature, a principle complimentary to mechanicism (and at the same time acting as its metaphysical foundation). Yet in order for the regularity of such phenomena as gravitation to be guaranteed, the Spirit of Nature has to be rid of any conscience and will of its own. However, besides this tendency to "strip" the world soul of its personal aspects, leading ultimately to the notion of a completely impersonal natural law, a deeper analysis of certain aspects of More's philosophical system shows also a determination to preserve the broader connections that tie the classical notion of a world soul to a specific world picture that does not necessarily fit...

Bočková, Anežka ; Bláha, Jaroslav (advisor) ; Čech, Viktor (referee)
Bočková, A.: Artificialism as a specific Czech inter-war style [Diploma thesis] Prague, 2016 - Charles University, Faculty of Education, Department of Art Education. 118 p. This diploma thesis has the character of comparative analysis, which deals with the Artificialism as specific Czech style in the period between two world wars. This work maps its position in the interwar art. It finds resource for a development of art and literary style similar to poetism or the Devetsil association. The poetism brings a new view of the world. The Artificialism is its visual equivalent that provides identification of the painter and poet, or poetry and image, or the topic of memories of memories. The thesis also presents the main and only two members of Artificialism - Styrsky and Toyen, and discusses their work, ideas, practices and theoretical works. I analyse the tensioned relationship between Artificialism and surrealism in the conclusion. The important finding is that artificialism is the original and most peculiar style of the interwar avant-garde, not only an intermediate step between Cubism and Surrealism, as it was presented in last years. On the base of theoretical part there was made the concept of practically proven didactic series, with reference to the Framework Education Programme and to the...

C. S. Lewis and the Language of Modern Apologetics
Šmejdová, Barbora ; Novotný, Vojtěch (advisor) ; Červenková, Denisa (referee) ; Štěch, František (referee)
ThLic. Bc. Barbora Šmejdová Title of the thesis: C. S. Lewis and the Language of Modern Apologetics Abstract The dissertation thesis is devoted to the question of what kind of language we should use in contemporary apologetics to make Christian message communicable to unbelievers. This question is approached through the work of C. S. Lewis. After the introduction and biography of the author, the thesis provides the analysis of Lewis' gnoseological starting points. In this chapter, we are trying to show that Lewis is able to pay attention to the present accent on subjective perspective without getting trapped in relativism. The next chapter focuses on Lewis' theory of language. For his view, the theme of myth and metaphor is central. Together with Lewis, we come to the conclusion that human language is metaphorical, but we can still touch truth. This journey is not easy, though. To be able to make readers approach truth, the author has to live in truth. That is why the next chapter is devoted to the theological interpretation of imagination and shows that authentic Christian imagination is an integral part of each good apologetic text. The last chapter is focused on the genres of apologetics and, based on Lewis' work, presents their benefits and restrictions. Keywords C. S. Lewis; language of apologetics;...

Pešlová, Radmila ; Velíšek, Martin (advisor) ; Čech, Viktor (referee)
Pešlová, R .: Table as an image - a specific space for recording and communicating in fine arts and art education (Dissertation) Prague 2015, Charles University, Faculty of Education, Art Education Department, 100 s. The thesis contains a table as a specific space, which connotes different meanings in the context of contemporary events. The theoretical part refers thus to the social relations, which are part of both public and private - family space in which a table plays its essential role. Not only as a subject form of everyday life, which is linked to a personal experience, but also as a form of symbolic expression. A table is kind of bearer of communication, message. This will be supported not only via etymological and sociological analysis, but also by the analysis of selected works of art. It is a way to inspect this phenomenon in the aforementioned context. The aim of this study is to show - through fine arts, historical and sociological relations - the view of a table as a continuously interconnected complex, through which it is possible to better realize some family ties and social events, including contemporary needs and priorities.. This view has become the basis and inspiration for the own creative work and a subsequent didactic concept. The artwork is focused on the areas of a family...
Models of the comic in Hašek's novel "Švejk" compared with the top satirical works of the Bulgarian, Russian and Serbian fiction
Dichev, Bogdan ; Just, Vladimír (advisor) ; Černý, Marcel (referee) ; Koten, Jiří (referee)
Keywords: literary comic, comic model, theory of carnivalesque, theory of the play, imagination, incongruity The dissertation pursues three main goals: to define the differentiating features of specific comic models (goal A - the differentiation goal); to introduce the principles of the comic in "Švejk", and its polyphony and originality, the technical devices, which shape it, and the semantic procedures of its creation (goal B - the analysis goal); to prove that between Hašek's "Švejk" and the other four works of Bulgarian, Russian and Serbian satirical prose ("Bay Ganyo", "The Twelve Chairs", "The Little Golden Calf" and "Autobiography") there is a stable common basis (a comic model), which is specified in each of those works (goal C - the juxtaposition goal). The conceptual approach in the methodology of the exploration is based on the conviction that the core of the fictional magic in Hašek's "Švejk" is precisely the comic. The methodological approach of the hierarchical systematization wields all known qualifications of the comic in the models displayed here, which have the nature of unifying classification frames. The methodology of the choice and application of the conceptual instruments is based on the taxonomy of the famous Czech cultural critic Vladimír Borecký, whose terminological...
