The narrative study: Absalom's cycle

6 The result of my thesis is the finding that narrative analysis is an approach that allows understanding biblical text in a bigger scope. The better comprehension is particularly given by understanding of the deep narrative structures. This works also for the exegesis where the narrative-analytical frame serves as a sieve that separates statements burdened by theology. However these statements can be seen as the door through which we can enter the story and determine its fundamental message. On the other hand, narrative approach cannot be considered as an all-embracing approach for understanding the Old Testament text, because it does not help us neither to discover what exactly led the author to create the Absalom's cycle, nor to define what demands he places on the readers.

Interpreting Narrative Techniques in Moby-Dick

Thesis Abstract The objective of this thesis is to map the narrative strategies of Herman Melville's Moby-Dick. By applying different narrative theories to Moby-Dick, it explores and assesses mainly the narrative reliability (Wayne C. Booth) and the narrative situation (Franz K. Stanzel). Ishmael is generally considered to be an example of an unreliable narrator and in this thesis manifestations of his unreliability are evaluated. Special attention is devoted to the inconsistencies in the narrative (e.g. recurring disappearances of Ishmael, shifts in focus on some of the characters, complete disappearances of other characters) and their treatment, taking the general academic consensus into account. Such phenomena are discussed as deliberately and consciously incorporated into the narrative, rather than being a result of a precipitated writing process. Apart from the formal inconsistencies, the narrative also includes incongruities of thematic nature (e.g. questionable value-scheme according to Rimmon- Kenan). By employing Stanzel's narrative theory, the thesis discusses Ishmael's oscillation between "narrator" and "reflector," with special focus on the dramatic chapters. The role of a writer in selected metafictional novels Bc. Eva Šulcová Abstract This diploma thesis deals with the genre of metafictional novel. The aim of the diploma thesis is to identify various internal motivations for the usage of metafiction technique in literature and to describe the role of a writer. The first part summarizes the theoretical background of the genre and formulates some characteristic features of metafictional novel (emphasized vicariousness of the narrative, reflection of the creative act, personality of the writer, or the problematized relationship between reality and fiction), which were all illustrated by the analysis of André Gide's novel The Counterfeiters. The second part consists of interpretations of three metafictional novels. The interpretations aim at a complex analysis of the author and at a description of various functions of the metafiction technique as a constituent of the work's meaning. Gide uses metafiction to display the discrepancy between reality and illusion, thus uncovering hypocrisies of society and passing judgement on it. To Čapek, metafiction is a tool for applying multiperspectivity to his storyline, thus creating a metaphor of varying epistemic principles. (in English): The bachelor's diploma thesis deals with the prose fiction of Miloš Urban and aims at a complex interpretation of his work with the help of the key narratives categories. The text of the thesis is based on textual analysis and application of established narrative concepts and categories. Therefore, it covers the categories of the plot, protagonists, space, time and the narrator; each category is first specified in its general terms and then applied to the analysis of specific texts.

Short exotic stories in work of Julius Zeyer

Work "Short exotic stories in work of Julius Zeyer" deals with five selected Zeyer's works that are set in the exotic land of India and Far East. One prose is associated with India, the other four with China and Japan. The works are a result of careful collecting, translating and creative work of Julius Zeyer. The present diploma thesis outlined in brief the life of Julius Zeyer and its role in the contemporary literature. It characterized Zeyer's interest in the exotic motives and way he followed them. The diploma thesis also considered form of the Zeyer's prose. The present work examined characteristics of plot and main characters and as well as the representation of the exotic places. It showed that the narrative places take part in creating the atmosphere that corresponds to the current experience of the characters. The nature of the characters is revealed against the background of the plot. Zeyer elaborated mutual connection between the characters and areas. Part of the interpretation was in each case devoted to the overall Zeyer's evocation of India, China and Japan and its artistic depth.

Postmodern Characteristics of KURT VONNEGUT

This thesis analyzes narrative strategies of Kurt Vonnegut as a postmodern author with a specific style. The first part defines postmodernism as opposed to modernism and explains all essential notions to provide the theoretical background. This part also includes a biographical element, describing the important events of the author's life, as these had a major influence on his work. Second part of the thesis analyzes the narrative style of the two selected books, Breakfast of Champions and Mother Night. The conclusion summarizes the most important specifics of the author's narrative strategies and style in the given books. This thesis presents Kurt Vonnegut as a significant and influential representative of postmodern American literature of the second half of the 20th century. Vonnegut fully employs the narrative strategies typical for this period, and by experimenting he creates his own unique style.

Andean universe in the aspect of childish narrator

Diplomová práce se zabývá pohledem dětského vypravěče na andský svět. Tato perspektiva je analyzována na základě románů dvou peruánských spisovatelů: Hluboké řeky od José Maríi Arguedase a Kronika ze San Gabriel od Julia Ramóna Ribeyra. Práce je rozdělená na teoretickou a analytickou část. Teoretická část pojednává o indigenistickém literárním proudu, životě autorů a románu formování. Analýza uvedených děl je rozdělena do tří částí: tematický, kompoziční a jazykový plán. Tematický plán reflektuje konfrontaci dvou světů (andský a západní) a motivy, které romány sdílejí. V kompozičním plánu jsou rozebrány veškeré náležitosti související s kompozicí děl a navíc výsledek dosaženého vývoje ústředních protagonistů. Jazykový plán se zaměřuje na postavu vypravěče a rozbor využitých jazykových prostředků. V závěru je vyhodnocený rozdílný pohled hrdinů na andský svět. Vít Kazmar - Juan Filloy: A myth, an author, a work The work Juan Filloy: A myth, an author, a work focuses on the neglected Argentinian writer Juan Filloy (1894 - 2000) and its aim is to serve as an introduction to his work that has received little attention so far. Its first part is dedicated to the analysis of the myth that has spread around the author and completely eclipsed his work. It consists mainly of anecdotal features of his personality and it touches his work only superficially. However, the status of an unknown writer is determined in large part by Filloy's own decision to live in a small town and publish the books himself, as well as by his demanding style, wide vocabulary and often very provocative language and themes. However, it is possible to find some key attributes of his aesthetics in the myth about the author: the palindromes mean a turning toward language as well as the strict and disciplined approach; the wide vocabulary points to the desire of precision of expression etc. The majority of the work then concentrates on the analysis of the author's language and on the interpretation of the novel Op Oloop. Probléms of childhood in prose of Martina Drijverová

In my bachelor thesis I concentrate on book themes, types of characters including the narrator's resemblance and a portrayal of the environment in Martina Drijverová's selected prose. The books involved: "Táta k příštím Vánocům ", "Táta pro radost i pro zlost", "Táta nemá smutky rád", "Sísa Kyselá", "Sísa Kyselá a ušmudlaný rytíř", "Zajíc a sovy", "Nekonečné prázdniny" and "Domov pro Marťany". In the first part of the thesis I focus on a brief biography and bibliography of the author. I also define a genre of prose story of children's life. I also deal with Martina Drijverová's position among other Czech authors of this genre. In the main part I deal with themes that the author used in her prose - a child and a single parent family, an outsider, a child friendship and a child with disability. The themes are still actual for today's children. Then I pay attention to types of characters. It is the largest part of my thesis. It covers a characteristic of protagonists in the books and also the narrator's resemblance. In narration of girl characters the author used the first-person narrative mode as a way to express their thoughts and feelings. In stories of boys Drijverová used the third-person narrative mode.
