Chmelíková, Julie ; Kozák, Kryštof (advisor) ; Raška, Francis (referee)
This bachelor thesis is concerned with the foreign policy of Brazil towards the USA during the administrations of Fernando Henrique Cardoso and Lula da Silva. The aim of this thesis is to determine whether the election of the leftist president Lula had an impact on the continuity of the Brazilian foreign policy towards the USA. Firstly, the concept of autonomy in foreign relations is introduced and subsequently put into context of South America and eventually into the context of Brazil itself. The second part offers an insight into some aspects of the political system of Brazil such as the presidential diplomacy and coalitional presidentialism. The third and the fourth parts are the core of the thesis and examine the cooperation between Brazil and the USA at the political and economic levels. In the framework of both the political and economic cooperation specific topics are identified, which are then analyzed with the objective of comparing Cardoso's and Lula's foreign policy. The thesis as a whole concludes that while the political cooperation between the USA and Brazil after the Lula's election demonstrates continuity, discontinuity prevails in the economic cooperation.

Post-neoliberalism and the path towards integration in South America
Flores Uijtewaal, Celeste ; Krausz Hladká, Malvína (advisor) ; Riegl, Martin (referee)
Over the past decade, South America has been undergoing many transformations, through which it has been experiencing rapid economic growth, has heightened its ability to act more autonomously from international influence on matters of decision-making, and in general is perceived to have become a more stable region in several aspects. In this outlook, South America is increasingly distinguishing itself from the rest of Latin America. South America has been seeking integration for more than two centuries, when independence from the colonizing powers marked the introduction of the notion of integration in the region. However, most observers would argue that until now, South America has not succeeded in achieving its integration aims. Today, however, a new form of regional integration is being introduced in South America, which is said to differ significantly from previous integration schemes. This time, integration is based on left governments, and thereby South America is thought to have entered a Post Neoliberal stage. Historical factors explain the need for a Post Neoliberal approach to government nowadays, as it may be the only sustainable way forward for the region's development. Post Neoliberalism is therefore at the core of new integration efforts. Particularly the recently established Unasur...

Stanzelová, Magdalena ; Perottino, Michel (advisor) ; Tomalová, Eliška (referee)
Bachelor thesis Brazilian emigration in Portugal after its adherence to the European Community deals with the migration flow coming from Brazil to Portugal after 1986. It describes its evolution in time, concentrating on the comparison of its specific waves. The work gives an overview of the factors that cause that the Brazilians often choose Portugal as their target country, as well as treaties that give this relationship an international framework. The thesis analyses the causes, development and consequences of this migration flow. The second part of the work is dedicated to the comparison of the first wave of immigration that started in the late 1980s, and the second one, that took place between 1998 and 2003. Jan Klecanda - Havlasa, his life and relation to Brazil
Kratochvílová, Lucie ; Binková, Simona (advisor) ; Grauová, Šárka (referee)
Jan Havlasa was the first Ambassador of Czechoslovakia to Brazil, a distinguished writer and explorer. The purpose of this thesis is to present the explorer's life. Havlasa visited Slovakia after finishing secondary school, and soon after he travelled also to Italy; Saint Louis, Missouri; or the island of Tahiti. After the Paris Peace Conference in 1919, Havlasa served as the Ambassador of Czechoslovakia to Brazil (1920-1924); in 1943, Czechoslovak president Edvard Beneš called him back into diplomatic service, this time as the Ambassador to Chile. Among his most important formative experiences we can find his membership in the Opium Commission of the League of Nations. Despite the fact that Havlasa spent most of his life abroad, he never relinquished his homeland: he took interest in the situation of Czechoslovakia and fought for its independence on the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. His extensive lecturing activities, as well as his treatise Colonial Policy in Relation to the Great War earned him one year of gaol in Vienna. The thesis also takes into account Havlasa's extensive literary work and his lectures, which took place all over Czechoslovakia and during which he presented his books, photographs and travel experience to his readers and listeners.
