Surňáková, Katarína ; Zemanová, Štěpánka (advisor) ; Trávníčková, Zuzana (referee)
The theoretical part of diploma thesis The Treatment of Prisoners of War in Afghanistan addresses the international law response to events related with the "war on terror". It also highlights the fact that the application of international law is necessary for harmonization national legislation of the states with international rules. In this case the United States of America. The empirical part of the thesis points out to the case of prison torture in detention center Bagram. The aim of this thesis is posing a question whether nowadays it is possible to capture and define the legal issues that arise with the torture of prisoners of war.

Syntax in methods for information retrieval
Straková, Jana
Title: Information Retrieval Using Syntax Information Author: Bc. Jana Kravalová Department: Institute of Formal and Applied Linguistics Supervisor: Mgr. Pavel Pecina, Ph.D. Supervisor's e-mail address: pecina@ufal.mff.cuni.cz Abstract: In the last years, application of language modeling in infor- mation retrieval has been studied quite extensively. Although language models of any type can be used with this approach, only traditional n-gram models based on surface word order have been employed and described in published experiments (often only unigram language models). The goal of this thesis is to design, implement, and evaluate (on Czech data) a method which would extend a language model with syntactic information, automatically obtained from documents and queries. We attempt to incorporate syntactic information into language models and experimentally compare this approach with uni- gram and bigram model based on surface word order. We also empirically compare methods for smoothing, stemming and lemmatization, effectiveness of using stopwords and pseudo relevance feedback. We perform a detailed ana- lysis of these retrieval methods and describe their performance in detail. Keywords: information retrieval, language modelling, depenency syntax, smo- othing

Spread Determinants and Model Uncertainty: A Bayesian Model Averaging Analysis
Seman, Vojtěch ; Rusnák, Marek (advisor) ; Hlaváček, Michal (referee)
The spread between interest rate and sovereign bond rate is commonly used in- dicator for country's probability to default. Existing literature proposes many different potential spread determinants but fails to agree on which of them are important. As a result, there is a considerable uncertainty about the cor- rect model explaining the spread. We address this uncertainty by employing Bayesian Model Averaging (BMA). The BMA technique attempts to consider all the possible combinations of variables and averages them using a model fit measure as weights. For this empirical exercise, we consider 44 different explanatory variables for a panel of 47 OECD countries for the 1980-2010 pe- riod. Most of the previously suggested determinants, including "public debt" or "budget balance", were attributed low inclusion probabilities. We find a role of variables previously not included in the literature's spread determinants - "unemployment" and "government consumption" which rank high by the in- clusion probability. These results are robust to a wide range of both parameter and model priors. Cooperation between Schools and Curators for Children and Youth
JAROŠOVÁ, Erika
The bachelor thesis deals with interdisciplinary cooperation in addressing risk behavior among pupils in primary and secondary schools. In particular, it focuses on the cooperation of schools and representatives of social, curators for children and youth. The work is divided into two parts. The theoretical part introduces with existing legislative norms and theoretical approaches, which are governed by educational institutions in the implementation of prevention of risk behaviors and guiding the work of social curators for children and youth. The empirical part in relation to the theoretical part describes and evaluates the specific experiences of representatives of both subjects. Result of the thesis are outlined recommendations that can improve the current communication between schools and curators for children and young people to achieve positive results by interdisciplinary cooperation between these two institutions in addressing high-risk behavior.

Talking about immigration to Europe. Analysis of facebook posts of Doctors without borders
Šlédrová, Jasňa ; Moree, Dana (advisor) ; Muhič Dizdarevič, Selma (referee)
The subject of this diploma thesis is the potential of organizations of civil society to influence public debate about immigration to Europe via Facebook. Conclusions introduced in this diploma thesis are based on my own empirical research as well as on literature focused on public relations. Research is designed as single case study of Facebook communication of Doctors without Borders. I explore the diversity of topics and argumentation present in the organization's communication, reactions of its audience and mutual interactions between organization and its audience. I explain that content, visual and formal aspects may play a key role when an organization is trying to address wide audience, whose ideas is willing to shape and influence. Research points out that the communication of Doctors without Borders about migration to Europe is one-sided, because it's mainly driven by activities and mission of the organization. This one-sidedness is partly compensated by engaged audience that enriches discussions under the Facebook posts of the organization with diverse topics and opinions. The thesis tries to capture the significance of tension between organization and its audience that raises inspirational discussions, which might not occur in case of absolute consensus. Key words communication, public...

Differences in communication between men and women
Kuželová, Markéta ; Chejnová, Pavla (advisor) ; Šmejkalová, Martina (referee)
The topic of the thesis is to monitor differences in communication between men and women. The theoretical part summarizes the information about communication in general and outlines the differences in communication between men and women. The empirical part is based on interview. We examine possible differences of verbal communication between men and women with university education. Following characteristics were examined: formality, expressions, vulgar, addressing, topics, and the role in communication and interruptions. The results provide information about relatively specific differences in verbal communication between men and women. It was found that men use significantly more technical terms, use more vulgar words, while women choose such expressions exeptionally. Men do not interrupt the other speaker, women interrupt in more than 50% cases.. The results confirm previously published findings on this topic.

The extremist organisation's potential in addressing teenagers in Czech republic
Papajiková, Miroslava ; Kučera, Rudolf (advisor) ; Charvát, Jan (referee)
THE EXTREMIST ORGANISATION'S POTENTIAL IN ADDRESSING TEENAGERS IN CZECH REPUBLIC Theses MIROSLAVA PAPAJIKOVÁ Abstract This paper is engaged in teenagers and their attitude towards the extremist organisation. The author sums up basic connotations of terms used in connection with the extremism. She acquaints readers with the best known extremist organisation in Czech republic and their methods how to address other people, namely teenagers. However, the text is focused especially on the real situation and that s why it contains an empirical part dedicated to research, where she submits and evaluates the dates obtained from questionnaires. The aim of this text is an analyse of the attitude of teenagers (without the right to vote) to the extremist organisation and vice versa the attitude of this organisation to the teenagers. The hypothesis is based on the notion that teenagers join the extremist organisation because of their dissatisfaction with the political situation and even as the absence of the right to vote.

Essays on Social Interactions and Policy Evaluation
Pertold, Filip ; Jurajda, Štěpán (advisor) ; Buonanno, Paolo (referee) ; Martins, Pedro S. (referee)
In the first part, I explore the start of daily smoking, which is often after the re-sorting of students between elementary and secondary education. I employ a novel identification strategy based on this re-sorting, in order to estimate peer effects in youth smoking. The reflection problem is addressed by peers' pre-secondary-school smoking, which is not influenced by the current interaction. The self-selection is minimized by one's own presecondary school behavior and the pre-existing smoking prevalence among older schoolmates. The empirical findings from the Czech Republic, where the prevalence of youth smoking has recently reached high levels, suggest that male youth smoking is affected by classmates, while female smoking is not. In the second part, I estimate the effect of opposite-gender peer drinking on individual risky sexual behavior among Czech youth. The identification strategy relies on two main controls for individual and group-specific unobservables. First, younger schoolmates' sexual behavior is a control for school-specific attitudes toward sexual behavior. Second, predetermined individual pre-secondary-school alcohol consumption is used to control for selfselection into schools of individuals with specific attitudes toward alcohol. As opposed to Waddell (2010), I find that female drinking...

The Role of Health Social Worker and Non-Medical Patient
Burgerová, Michaela ; Fischer, Ondřej (advisor) ; Kozlová, Lucie (referee)
This thesis describes the role of health-social worker and non-medical patient. The main objective of this work is to explore possibilities and ways in which the profession of health-social worker may be enhanced so as to be able to effectively fulfill its mandate to help the non-medical patient in the broadest sense. The research part is focused on interviews with four health-social workers and six non-medical patients, then the practice in a particular medical device. The practical part is to obtain an empirical basis for this work. The work highlights the need to address the situation of non-medical patient and the role of health-social workers at various levels to ensure the work of health-social worker be due to non-medical patients effectively, reduce the number of medical facilities and non-medical patients still remained an autonomous person.
