Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca: travel and change (Naufragios)
Marešová, Jaroslava ; Housková, Anna (referee) ; Vydrová, Hedvika (advisor)
The book known nowadays as Naufragios by Álvar Núez Cabeza de Vaca is one of the most important testimonies about the discovery and conquest of the New World. The first half of the 16th century saw many exploration and conquest travels in which thousands of sailors, explorers, conquerors and soldiers had to face the reality of the just discovered continent. It is really interesting to see how those who wrote about this event experienced it. Naufragios has always been read as a source of historical and anthropological information, but it has been also studied for the literature elements which we can find in it. In my thesis, I tried to look at the work in its complexity: see the literature influences in it and find those elements that we could call literature elements, but also I wanted to focus on the unusual experience of the author and look into the testimony of his experience with the American reality and see how this experience changed him. My thesis begins with a historical introduction which I consider very important to situate the work in its context. I tried to explain the events which led to the discovery of the New World and also the reaction of the Old World to the discovered one. After this general introduction my work continues with analysis of the first literature that treated the reality of...

Applying the Reagan doctrine in Afghanistan During the Soviet Occupation
Šimčíková, Klára ; Sehnálková, Jana (advisor) ; Litera, Bohuslav (referee)
The Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in December 1979 ended the period of détente between the USSR and the US. In this new phase of escalation of the Cold War, Ronald Reagan's administration applied a new foreign policy strategy in the Third World. This new strategy, known as the Reagan Doctrine, included increased assistance to anticommunist insurgencies against client regimes of the USSR. This thesis examines the application of the Reagan Doctrine in Afghanistan. Using this country as a case in point, it attempts to find out to what extent the Reagan Doctrine was a coherent strategy or whether there were any inconsistencies in its application. Also, it seeks to find out how successful the Reagan Doctrine was in Afghanistan with regards to forcing the Soviet troops to withdraw. It also shows the long-term consequences for the USSR, the United States and Afghanistan itself.

Family ideal and real: the change of the image of the family in selected works of Mexican American authors
Sládková, Magdalena ; Kolinská, Klára (referee) ; Ulmanová, Hana (advisor)
The fact that in the twenty-first century Latinos became the largest ethnic minority in the United States is inevitably mentioned in any recent publication on Latino population in the U.S. l People of Mexican origin form the largest percentage of the Latino group, 58%, according to the 2000 U.S. census.2 Mexican Americans have a long history of settling in the United States, nevertheless, their disadvantaged position in the American society is evident. They are usually located among the working-class, have low income, and also low educational attainment. Some social scientists, whose works will be mentioned in this thesis, believe that it is the Mexican American culture that prevents this population from success; others attribute it to discrimination and negative stereotypes of Mexicans that are perpetuated in the American society. In the 1960s and 1970s the Mexican American civil rights movement, known as the Chicano Movement, decided to end the discrimination and other social problems by supporting Mexican American nationalism. One of the ways to increase their national pride was to point at the Mexican American family as a source of strength and a symbol of unity of all Mexicans in the United States. The Chicano Movement asked artists to create works of art that would represent the Chicano family as an...

Automatic Registration of Images Using Distance Transform
Viták, Tomáš ; Daneš, Jan (advisor) ; Šámal, Martin (referee) ; Chudáček, Zdeněk (referee)
The distance transform is used for the preprocessing of image data for correlation methods of automatic registration of digital images. In our department the algorithm of automatic registration of images with the distance transform calculation by 4SSED+ method is used for the images of control and dynamic investigations, where there was a change in the position of the patient. In this thesis we analyze six best known distance transform algorithms on the simplified set of image data (4SSED, 4SSED+, SaitoXY, SaitoYX, Maurer, Eggers algorithms) and from those we choose the most suitable one for the purposes of automatic registration (4SSED+) and subsequently we use it in automatic registration of T1W images of a set of 76 MR examinations of head in patients with multiple sclerosis. This thesis proves that appropriately chosen and implemented algorithm of automatic registration with the use of distance transform can be as accurate as a manual method of registration and much faster. We performed the assessment of accuracy of 7 automatic registration with manual correction. From the nearly negligible correction values of subpixel shift and small rotation angles in the aforementioned set of 76 MR investigations and subsequently from their statistical characteristics the high accuracy of the used algorithm is apparent.

The essential processes of FeS cluster assembly and mitochondrial protein import in parasitic protists
Šmíd, Ondřej ; Tachezy, Jan (advisor) ; Hampl, Vladimír (referee) ; DYALL, Sabrina D. (referee)
CONCLUSIONS Mitochondria appear to be vital organelles for all eukaryotic organisms known to date. A large body of evidence strongly indicates that hydrogenosomes and mitosomes, the organelles of anaerobic or intracellular parasitic protists lacking the "typical" mitochondria, are only a variation on the mitochondrial theme. However, even though the three organelles are evolutionarily the same entity, remarkable differences exist between them that reflect the adaptation of the organisms to their specific niches. In the thesis I tried to unravel some aspects of the essential mitochondrial processes of FeS cluster assembly and mitochondrial protein import in parasitic protists T. brucei and G. intestinalis. We investigated the function of the T. brucei cysteine desulfurase IscS and the scaffold protein IscU. We demonstrated that the two proteins are essential for FeS cluster formation and consequently the viability of the procyclic stage of T. brucei. Even though both IscS and IscU were specifically localized to the mitochondrion, their deficient expression affected the maturation of FeS proteins operating not only in the mitochondrion, but also in the cytosol. This indicates that a crucial part of FeS cluster assembly is localized to the mitochondrion of T. brucei. One of the major differences between the T....

The Model of Interest-free Monetary System
HAWI, André
Over the ages, religions varied in their beliefs and teachings, but one of the aspects which most of them shared is the antipathy towards charging interest. Many models and methods that effectively achieve their purpose without relying on interest had been developed and resulted in success. Some of these models were hindered and eventually banned by local authorities, others survive to this day, such as JAK members' bank and the Islamic monetary system. When comparing a loan from an interest-free bank to a loan in a conventional bank the result was a little misleading since the monthly installments in the interest-free bank studied were higher. However when the loan costs of both kinds of banks were compared the interest free bank turned out to be much cheaper. The results and analysis made in this thesis can be further analyzed in the sense of depth, collection of data, and experiments.

Flow-shop Problems
Dyntar, Tomáš ; Tegze, Miron (advisor) ; Červinka, Michal (referee)
A description of flow shop and lot streaming including an example is given. Methods and algorithms ofr solving various modifications of the single job two-machine flow shop transfer lot sizing problem are shown. It starts with the calsulation of two lots (discrete), three lots (continuous) problem and then Trietsch s polynomial algorithm or an arbitrary number of sublots is introduced. This alogithm is then used for solving modifications with finding the proper number of sublots for given makespan, with constant or linear transfer times including variants with limited number of transfer machines or their limited capacity, with constant or linear set up times. A domed with both transfer and setup times is then developed and Trietschs algorithm modified. A theoreme by R. G. Vickson for solving multiple job lot streaming problem by treating the lot streaming problem for each job separately and then using Johnsons alogorithm is proposed to extend the results of the single job cases to those of multiple jobs. A known way to extend results to the three machine problem by treating each pair of successive machines separately or developing Trietschs algorithm for three machines is shown. Most of the procedures are illustrated in examples.

Success runs in series of Bernoulli trials
Mach, Tibor ; Anděl, Jiří (advisor) ; Dvořák, Marek (referee)
This work is focused on selected probability characteristics of runs in a sequence of Bernoulli trials and on some randomness tests based on these runs. Based on Markov chains, an explicit formula is derived for the probability that the first success run of a lenght $k$ in a sequence of independent Bernoulli trials occurs in the $n$-th trial and other formulas for this probability are mentioned. Furthermore, approximations of the exact value of this probability (particularly the Feller approximation), bounds of these approximations, and their numeric relations are examined. Lastly, a test of randomness based on the lenght of the longest run in a sequence of $n$ Bernoulli trials and a test based on the total amount of runs are derived.

Mikešová, Jana ; Krpálek, Pavel (advisor) ; Krpálková Krelová, Katarína (referee)
The diploma thesis Activating methods in business education is focused at training Prince project management for the company Symphera. The aim is to create methods for activation of Prince2 training and incorporate them into new methodologies of training. In the theoretical part we will introduce various activating methods. We will explain what they mean and what training methods are used within them. In the part Creation of activation methods we will describe what was the process of working on the inclusion of activating methods in the training course of Prince2 project methodology. We will review the selection and subsequent formation of individual methods. The aim of comparing the success of the course is to determine whether students who have completed a course of activating methods achieve better test results than those who completed the course the classic method.
