Bachtin's philosophy of language
Kučerová, Barbora ; Fulka, Josef (advisor) ; Ritter, Martin (referee)
This present looks into the philosophy of language and meaning in Bachtin's writings. Our research into the constitution of meaning is founded in utterance, which is in the life access grasped as a dialog. There are three central points by which we approach this topic. First of all I would like to clarify Bachtin's proposition about relation between utterance and non-language reality by polemic with Saussure. Meaning of language is constituted in forms of speech, which are founded in interest groups - this is non-language reality, and always bears some evaluation. Moreover, I demonstrate that particular speaker and listener are not essential for understanding of the utterance but interest groups are the basis of explanation the utterance like dialog. Each utterance is realized on the border of other's utterances and this is the reason why meaning cannot be conceived as identical with itself, but is determined by dialog with other evaluations. Therefore, meaning always bears some evaluation, there are not one universal language, but heteroglossia. Keywords utterance meaning evaluation speech form dialog

Blindness and Obsession: Vladimir Nabokov's Lolita and Laughter in the Dark
Rychnovská, Tereza ; Quinn, Justin (advisor) ; Procházka, Martin (referee)
Many books and essays have been written on the works of Vladimir Nabokov, of which my bibliography contains only a tiny fragment. Yet, most of the studies make comparisons within either Nabokov's Russian works or his American works, while the comparison of the two novels I have chosen, Lolita and Laughter in the Dark, is very rare. Most novels by Vladimir Nabokov display the themes of obsession, blindness, manipulation, freedom, and morality. Most of them also are about games, including language games, and the love of language in general. Nabokov switched from writing in Russian to English and experienced a great deal of pain in relinquishing his native tongue, becoming a phantom in his own prose, as if, he said, he had created the person who wrote in English but was not himself doing the writing. 1 Bearing this in mind, it is also important to state that he had translated two of his Russian novels into English (Laughter in the Dark and Despair) . This split in Nabokov's life into two periods is also why it was of great relevance to me that I should compare two of his novels that were written at different times, in different languages, and with different backgrounds. It might seem more natural to compare two novels originally written in Russian that have quite similar plots and characters, Laughter in the...

Hoštičková, Lucie ; Vaněk, Jan (advisor) ; Jiří, Jiří (referee)
This diploma thesis of a project charakter consists of several parts. The theoretical part under the title of Literary overview of the current state of the problem deals with roof gardens from the begining of time, where it describes the original purpose and function. Continues with development mainly in west countries and hightlights interesting examples from 20th century. It brings informations about composition of the roof vegetation, describes individual layers and materials, which can be used here. Included are detailed cuts and description of the following maintenance. The chapter about modern roof gardens contains examples from Czech republic and around the world in the form of extensive and intensive roof vegetation, interesting by their construction and their concepts. Practical part consists of two main chapters. First one evaluates the main underlying data and the layer structure of the already prepared flower-beds, for which there was then created koncept and planting plan. Separate project points out the proposal in the form of design parts, devided into individual subheads. First part shows a color variation of the thought, second is in the form of planting plan with the tables of used plants. There are presented techniques of the material transportation and deposition of individual components, which are used in the proposal. Final subheads contain informations about proposed maintnance of the roof garden and original budget. The space of the roof garden is intended for educational purposes for students, because it brings colorful sortiment of plants and also it is representative element of the Inter-faculty center of Enviromental Sciences II. Because the original design (plan, proposal) was not fully implemented, there is realistic plan added to the project part, which can be seen on the roof of MCEV II.
