"Fiat lux!" Public Lighting in Czech Towns in 19th and the Beginning of 20th Century
Jelínek, David ; Himl, Pavel (advisor) ; Pokludová, Andrea (referee)
The phenomenon of introducing public lighting in Czech cities is mainly associated with the increase in population in regionally important centres of industry, trade, craft, or administration. Unlike classical historiographical monographs, this work aims to investigate how the introduction of public lighting took place, who was involved in it, and what was at stake. Through the analysis of literary sources, particularly newspaper articles (both national and local) and archival records, the thesis seeks to highlight the attributes of light not only as a purely practical urban element, but also as a carrier of symbolic levels of security and progress. It is shown that light played an important role as a maintainer of security and prevented criminal behaviour by its presence. It is further revealed that light was a manifestation of civilization, education, and progress. Having public lighting on the streets was therefore not only a practical but also a symbolic issue. It was also reflected in the electoral programs of local political parties. It was not, however, the municipalities that incurred considerable costs in upgrading the lighting infrastructure (setting up gas plants, power stations, laying pipes); it was private entities that entered into contracts with municipalities for decades. However,...

The Danger and the question concerning relation to speech: Turning point and Heidegger's title the Danger (die Gefahr)
Jílek, Vlastimil ; Benyovszky, Ladislav (advisor) ; Prázný, Aleš (referee) ; Novotný, Jaroslav (referee)
The main aim of this theoretical study is to help to clarify Heidegger's conception of the Danger [Gefahr] in relation with possibilities of the Turn [Kehre] which are hidden in the Danger itself. The Danger is hidden in Enframing [Ge-stell] as the essence of technology. First of all, it is necessary to clarify the concepts of being, truth and freedom. This shows us that concealment (hiddenness) is the necessary precondition for unconcealment, i.e. truth. Heidegger in this context speaks about the paths to unconcealment. Significant way to unconcealment is the art. Heidegger in "The Origin of the Work of Art" explains the essence of art in terms of the concepts of being and truth. The art is for Heidegger the way of expressing the element of truth. Art is not merely representation of the way things are but artwork can bring the meaning of what it is to exist. That means, that Heidegger reminds us about the value of the work of art as the means to open a "clearing" [Lichtung] for the appearance of things in the world, or to disclose their meaning for human beings. Heidegger writes about the art's ability to set up an active struggle between "Earth" and "World". The World is the web of significant relations in which human being exists. The Earth means the background against which every meaningful...

The ordinary and extraordinary in life and experience of child protagonists in Adalbert Stifter's stories Rock Crystal and Granite
Koťová, Markéta ; Broukalová, Jindra (advisor) ; Haupenthal, Thomas Maria (referee)
The following diploma thesis deals with the analysis of two short stories by Adalbert Stifter from his collection Colorful stones - Rock Crystal and Granit. They were deliberately chosen, because in both stories children are the main protagonists. In these short stories there is always a boy and a girl, while the boy is always the one more experienced, and he protects the girl and brings her to safety. She follows him and obeys his instructions. Although the text contains many descriptions, it does not act statically because the heroes are on the run from danger, which gives the action dynamics. The text, the story, the language and the plot of the short stories as well as their common elements are analyzed. Furthermore, the theoretical concept, which is formulated in the preface to this collection, and whose major concepts are big and small, is confronted with the realization in these short stories.
