Beňovský, Jan ; Lendělová, Věra (advisor) ; Chlupáčová, Kamila (referee)
During the last three decades the work of Vladimir Sorokin has become well-known not only in Russia but also all over the world. His novels have been translated into many world languages. This is especially because of his individual attitude to Russia and its politics, history, and social issues, but also because of his attitude to literature and art. These topics are put into literary styles of post-modernism and conceptualism. In 2009 Czech translation of Sorokin's novel "A Day of the Oprichnik" was released. This novel was chosen for linguostylistic analysis because of its lexical and stylistic profuseness. In this thesis Vladimir Sorokin was put into the literary style. The novel "A Day of the Oprichnik" was briefly described, as well as basic characteristic of Oprichnina was summarized. In the detailed linguostylistic analysis were examined 17 historical terms and features (дьяк, приказ, скоморох, смута, стрелец, челобитная, ярлык, государь, калики перехожие, соборность, столбовой, трактир, домострой, гусляр, лик, трапеза, батя) helping to create Sorokin's fresco of the "new" Russia in the future. Subsequently the expression is compared to the Czech analogue. With particular attention paid to the comprehensibility of the Czech translation, semantic differences between the original word or...

Analýza bankovního sektoru ve vybraných zemích východní Evropy
Křížek, Tomáš ; Dvořák, Petr (advisor) ; Janda, Karel (referee)
The thesis analyzes the banking sectors in selected countries of CEE region, in particular in Albania, Serbia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina and compares their development with the Czech Republic as it is CEE country with one of the most advanced banking sectors in the region. Three parts of the paper analyzing separately each of the countries are supplemented by country comparison and final conclusions. General development, development of banking sector as well as banking market and financial performance of banks are examined. As a conclusion, all the countries develop in a different way and with different starting conditions. Albania relies more on qualitative development with low absolute figures but high relative indicators with respect to the utilization of available resources. The development in Serbia is rather quantitative, in contrary to the situation in Albania. Bosnia and Herzegovina is progressing quite ambiguously also due to uncertain political situation in the country. It can be also concluded that all the three countries still have to go a long way to reach comparable level of their banking systems with the Czech Republic.

The Influence of European Central Bank Interest Rates upon Consumption in Eurozone Countries
Glykner, Daniel ; Mandel, Martin (advisor) ; Chytilová, Helena (referee)
First, this paper presents basic definitions of the consumption function and gives a summary of main theoretical concepts of consumption as well as an overview and discussion of important papers on consumption. Above all, papers examining the influence of the interest rate upon consumption are accented. Furthermore it contains a brief context summary of current and potential eurozone members, work of the ECB and execution of common monetary policy. Subsequently we discuss the hypothesis of a possibly asymmetric impact of the interest rate upon consumption in individual countries, expand and justify the hypothesis based on indebtedness, wealth, etc. Empirically, hypotheses are tested on historical data of individual countries: transmission between interest rates of central banks (later the ECB) and market interest rates, correlation analysis of consumption changes and central interest rates in individual countries, correlations with year-on-year changes. Also, consumption functions are estimated using time series models while testing alternative variables in the regression equations. We discuss analysis results and methods used; the influence of the interest rate upon consumption seems to be small and the relationship type is not much different across the eurozone countries. Eventually, we outline possible implications of our results with respect to the future of the eurozone and related activity of the ECB.

Influence of Czech Immigrants on Willa Cather's Literary Work
Vomáčková, Tatiana ; Ženíšek, Jakub (advisor) ; Grmela, Josef (referee)
My interest in Willa Cather developed from reading her novels "My Antonia", "O Pioneers!" and several short stories dealing with European immigrants, especially those from Bohemia. I found it interesting that an American writer devoted so much attention to portray characters of another nationality with such a consistent approach. In this work I present available information on the background of her motivation and trace her sources for understanding the expatriate Bohemian community in the United States, in order to describe their representatives in fiction. I would like to draw a connecting line between the historical context and the literary portrayal of immigrants from Bohemia. Furthermore, I would like to introduce the real life model for Antonia Shimerda in "My Antonia" and depict some of the general characteristics ascribed to Bohemians at the break of the twentieth century. This thesis will deal with the factual, as well as the implicit, characteristics of Bohemian characters shown in her writings. I intend to compare Cather's point of view with the perspective of others who added their voice to the literary discussion of this subject matter.

Evaluation of predictive ability of selected exchange rate models based on statistical methods
Sommer, Josef ; Mandel, Martin (advisor) ; Tran, Van Quang (referee)
This diploma thesis evaluates out-of-sample predictive ability of exchange rate models. The first part of the thesis summarizes existing empirical findings about exchange rate predictability and describes exchange rate models chosen to be evaluated. The second part of the thesis evaluates predictive ability of purchasing power parity, uncovered interest parity, monetary model and Taylor rule model. The exchange rate models are evaluated on CZK/EUR and CZK/USD currency pairs. The analysis is made using quarterly data from 1999 to 2013, while 2009 to 2013 period is reserved for forecast evaluation. The predictive ability of exchange rate models is evaluated in one quarter, one year and three years horizons. The exchange rate models are specified in first differences and estimated by ordinary least squares method. The forecasts are made using rolling regression. The exchange rate models are evaluated using RMSE, Theil's U, CW test and direction of change criterion. The diploma thesis concludes with description of own empirical findings.
