Czechoslovakia in 1960s from the point of view of theory of non-democratic regimes

Abstract The Master thesis Czechoslovakia in 1960s from the point of view of theory non- democratic regimes deals with the analysis of political, economic and social development, especially with the so-called Prague Spring of 1968. The 1968 reform was an attempt to transform the Czechoslovak communist regime. The aim was to transform Czechoslovakia into a modern industrial society, break free from the total subordination to the Soviet Union, yet with the leading role of the Communist Party. For this reason, the year 1968 holds an important position in our post-war history. The thesis is divided into two main parts and seven chapters. The first part is devoted to non-democratic theories, particularly to totalitarianism and authoritarianism. The second part describes the events in the communist Czechoslovakia between 1948 and 1960. And subsequently, the remaining part is devoted to the main topic of the thesis, to Czechoslovakia in the 1960s. The aim of my thesis was to describe the situation in Czechoslovakia in the 1960s, identify the causes and consequences of the so-called Prague Spring of 1968 and try to match Czechoslovakia to a certain type of non-democratic regime in the 1960s and thus determine where Czechoslovakia was on the imaginary scale from totalitarianism to democracy in this period.

Religious Sects in Czechoslovakia in the 1950s

The thesis deals with religious sects in Czechoslovakia in the 1950s. Firstly, it describes new religious movements, which occurred in Czechoslovakia in the first half of the 20th century, especially Jehovah's Witnesses, Adventism, Mormonism and the others. The key theme of this thesis is the phenomenon of religious sects. It explores a procedure of the government, Communist party of Czechoslovakia and State Security. The thesis deals also with the conscientious objection in Czechoslovakia in the 1950s. In conclusion the thesis tries to describe the image of religious sects in newspapers. It draws from various primary sources (National Archives of the Czech Republic, Security Services Archive, Military History Archive) and from various historiographical and sociological literature.
The weakening of the independence of the judiciary and influence of the state administration on judicial decisions in the period of 1948 - 1953

This thesis is focused on the performance of judicial power in Czechoslovakia in the period of 1948 -- 1953, that is characterized by almost unlimited influence of the ruling party, the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia, on the entire society. It was associated with a destruction of division of power in the state and with intentional limitations of the independence of judiciary. The aim of the work is to identify and analyse particular components of a specific mechanism that was introduced to enable to influence the judiciary decisions according to power and political interests of the Communist party of Czechoslovakia through administrative bodies, especially Ministry of Justice. For this purpose fundamental changes of the legislation, personnel and also organizational changes in the judiciary were carried out.
The Weekly Magazine Tvorba 1946-1948

This bachelor thesis analyses a weekly communist magazine Tvorba from the year 1946 to the 1948 Czechoslovak coup d'état. Performed analysis is concentrated on the cultural-political articles through which the magazine that was published by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia aimed to discredit its political rivals. In the cultural-political sphere, there were mainly the press campaigns that have been conducted against the Minister of Education and Enlightenment, Jaroslav Stránský, and against the non-communist press. The work is also focused on the articles that in a way express an attitude of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia to the selected cultural and political events in the particular years. Moreover, there is briefly described the development of the periodical press from the First to the Third Republic with the inclusion of the history of the magazine Tvorba.
Changes in the Czechoslovak agriculture in the course of 1945 to 1948

The theme of the present paper is the post-war development of the Czechoslovak agriculture and the task of agriculture in the power-political intentions of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia within the three years of postwar development 1945 to 1948. The first part of the paper is concerned with the research of the origine and the forming of the new Government, the decreets of the president of the republic, the ownership changes, the soil reform and the immediate changes in agriculture taking place within this context. Included is also the role of the communist party and its agricultural policy. The following part of the paper relates to the political and economic development in the years 1945 to 1947, characterized by the elections in May 1946 and the ensuing controversy of political parties over agricultural policy. It researches also the development of the agricultural policy of the communist party on the basis of documents in the National Archives. The last part describes the process ending in the turn-over of the political system and is focused on the change of the agricultural policy of the communist party of Czechoslovakia and the scope of fulfillment of the hitherto aims of the communists and the opening of the collectivization process. The author has used in his paper the information derived from publications and articles, archives documents and the press media of the period.
Josef Novotný - historian in the service of the KSČ

This diploma thesis approaches the life story of one of the very important Czech historians postwar historiography, which has so far been overlooked, however. The work does not try to give information only about the life and works of Joseph Novotny, but classifies the historian in the context of time, focusing on his views and attitudes, which supported the communist ideology of the 60th of the 20 century, which was a great supporter. The author in creating the present study was based primarily on personal collection of Josef Novotný, which is stored in the Archives of the National Museum in Prague, Josef Novotny's work itself, the literature on the history of the First Republic, Second Republic and the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia, not least in the literature used to history of the historiography of the late 20th century. The work is divided into five chapters. The first chapter gives information about the life of Joseph Novotny. From second to fifth chapter are portrayed his personal attitudes and opinions of the historical situation until 30 years until the early 40th of the 20 century. About Josef Novotny are not yet issued any publication that would cover his life and work. Even literature is silent about him most. Therefore, the author sees the biggest benefit is that the present study provided information about the historian, who has been neglected Czech historiography, and perhaps opened a new research topic that can be developed further historians.
A position and a sway of the Cummunist party of Czechoslovakia after the year 1945

Anotation This bachelors' essay deals with a position of the Communist party of Czechoslovakia after the Second Worl War. A concentration on the role of KSČ after the occupation is important for a analysis of a result of the first election afetr the war, which the communist party won. The ground of the essay is detailed description of reasons and arguments, which contributed to communist party to attract new voters and then to win the election in 1946. A crucial year is the year 1945, during which KSČ create a strong position on political stage and a significant sway in nationals. In the same time communist party is successful in pressing of intentions and plans, which help it to obtain a power dominance in the country and to create convenient preconditions for a communists' triumphal February 1948.
