Influence of Selected Factors on Students' Mathematical Literacy in Central European Countries : Secondary Analysis of PISA 2003 Data
Voňková, Hana ; Byčkovský, Petr (advisor) ; Půlpán, Zdeněk (referee) ; Boschek, Petr (referee)
In this work we investigate the impact of selected personal, family and school characteristics on the level of mathematical ability of fifteen year old pupils from 6 countries of the Central Europe (Czech Republic, Hungary, Germany, Poland, Austria and Slovakia) and from countries with excellent results in mathematics (Finland, Hong Kong and the Netherlands). Then we compare the impact of the factors in the individual countries. Much can be concluded from this analysis. The type of school attended by the pupil has a great impact. The maximal difference between type of schools can come up to 40 percentage points in some countries (CR, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia). We do not discuss this factor in Finland and Poland, where all fifteen year olds attend one type of school. The results in these countries are therefore determined differently. As for other basic characteristics of the school, the size matters in some countries (Hong Kong and the Netherlands) and has always a positive effect. The urbanization level of the place of the school (the size of the village or city) is also positively correlated with the mathematics result. Here the Netherlands and Germany form an exception. The status of the school (public vs. private), lack of well-educated teachers, equipment of the school and enthousiasm of the...

Legitimation and professionalization of a Romani NGO in the Czech Repulic
Synková, Hana ; Vrhel, František (advisor) ; Uherek, Zdeněk (referee) ; Mušinka, Alexander (referee)
Legitimation and professionalization of a Romani NGO in the Czech Republic Hana Synková This PhD. thesis maps strategies of legitimation and survival of non-governmental organizations working with people that use to be categorized as "socially excluded" or "Roma". It attempts to answer the question: "What NGOs do to be able to look successful, gain resources, and create organizational reputation?" This work does not treat organizations as "things", but as processes and social networks influenced by state and European policies, funding mechanisms and internal competition. Despite the organizations being discursively divided into those preferring more ethnic or social definition of their clients, they have to cope with the same pressures in the shape of social services law, standards of quality or control systems that come with projects. Organizations are far from devoting their time to "work with clients"; they are also involved in enlarging social capital of their members and in production of "texts" that serve their legitimation claims towards control bodies, other organizations and public. In order to research these publicly less visible processes, the authoress uses methods of organizational anthropology - fieldwork inside organization and at many places which are contextually linked to the...

A four-part song of modern man: Czech translations of Walt Whitman's "Song of Myself"
Kalandra, Jan ; Kalivodová, Eva (advisor)
This thesis analyzes Czech translations of Walt Whitman's poetry, especially of his central poem, Song of Myself. The main aim of the paper is to provide translation analyses of all four complete Czech translations. Some fragmentary translations are also mentioned, and a basic overview of Czech secondary literature on Whitman's work is provided. The main body of the thesis is divided into three chapters. Chapter One describes Whitman's life and work in the context of his time, as portrayed in secondary literature. It concentrates on features reflected in the text of Song of Myself, including literary influences and censorship that influenced the work. It also sets out a hypothesis of possible censorship influences on the single translations. Chapter One continues with a detailed analysis of main structural features of Whitman's poetry, as reflected in Song of Myself. The features are contextualized with the main literary theories of the time and with Whitman's individual aesthetics. The structural features are sorted according to linguistic levels they belong to. This assortment is then used as a framework for the analyses in Chapters Two and Three. Chapter Two provides a detailed analysis of the translations in two selected sections of Song of Myself. The translations are compared to the original and one...

Design of Pravčická brána 3D model and its integration with 2.5D TIN terrain model
Brýdl, Ivo ; Brůha, Lukáš (advisor) ; Lysák, Jakub (referee)
The main goal of this thesis is to design integrated model containing a three-dimensional representation of Pravčická brána rock arch and 2.5D TIN model of surrounding terrain. Point cloud from airborne lidar measurements has to be classified into ground and non-ground features. The ground points are the basis of the TIN terrain representation. Second part of this thesis is focused on methods for reconstructing 3D surface from given points set retrieved with ground-based lidar measurement. The thesis describes the process of meshing point cloud with Poisson surface reconstruction. Finally, these two models are oriented and translated to real coordinates in order to form integrated hybrid model covering part of České Švýcarsko National Park.

Personal web pages of young people

Emulator for Intelligent Home End Stations
Šutovský, Filip ; Košař, Vlastimil (referee) ; Korček, Pavol (advisor)
This thesis deals with design and implementation of an application emulating end stations in intelligent home system, which are used to measure physical quantities and interact with switches. Application has a comprehensive graphical user interface developed in programming language Java, which allows testing of other system layers and recording of statistical data about emulation contributing to system analysis.
