From Intimate to Public - Constitution and Metamorphosis of "Women's writing" in the Context of Croatian literature Author: Dajana Vasiljevićova The bachelor thesis deals with the "women's writing" in Croatia, its constitution and transformations from the 1980s to present times. The main aim of the thesis is to map out characteristic discourses within literature in the context of social aspects of the Western orientated feminist movement in socialist Yugoslavia. It focuses on the analysis of femininity, sensibility and sexuality which are in opposition to values of patriachal society. The main part of the thesis comprises the analyses of three selected texts written by Croatian authors, namely Silk, Scissors by IrenaVrkljan, Marble Skin by Slavenka Drakulić and Steffie in the Jaws of Life by Dubravka Ugrešić as role models for the typology of "women's writing". The transformations of the genre were are examined continuously from the late 1970s when the theoretic aspects of "women's writing" were modified for the Croatian milieu. The confrontation of feminine identity with the patriachal phallogocentric discourse is based on hunger for recognition as an equal in society. Performance and Sexuality at fictions by Jakuba Katalpa

The subject of this thesis is to find and evaluate performative acts of the characters at proses written by Jakuba Katalpa. Since it is impossible to capture performative acts of all social discourses, we will focus only on the discourse of gender. Especially, because Jakuba Katalpa sees the world in a way that rise the question of a gender and feminism. Mainly we will focus on performative acts of characters and of a narrator at Katalpa's proses Mrtvé moře and Je hlína k snědku? Firstly, we attempt to define basic concepts such as a gender, an identity, and a performance and we will try to outline the basic theory on which we rely. We will also try to determine how, at theese proses, is an identity unregistered, how and by using which acts are characters identified with gender models, and how they differ from them. The result of the work would be to find and evaluate common principle of performance and its potential to change traditional stereotypes.

Feminism and emancipation at the threshold of the 20th century Anna Řeháková, Vlasta Pittnerová, two case studies This PhD thesis deals with feminism and women's emancipation in Prague at the threshold of the 20th century. This work is a case study, based mainly on the biographical method. It is a concrete contribution to the history of emancipation and women's issues. The aim is to contribute to understanding the development of the women's movement in the Czech region on the border of the 19th and 20th century in a particular situation. Matter of this thesis is conceived as two case studies of two little-known personalities of the women's movement, their life and work today: a teacher and writer Anna Rehakova and writer and publicist Vlasta Pittnerová. The author conducted an analysis of the archival materials, memoirs, and inhe- ritances, the sources of contemporary women's own literary press and publications of both protagonists examined, as well as specialized books on the matter. Feminist Reinterpretation of Traditional Theories of the State in International Relations

Feminist theory in International Relations is usually considered to be a homogenous approach within the field, critical of mainstream IR theory. There are, however, various strands of feminist IR, differing in their methodologies as well as their epistemological and ontological underpinnings. This is well visible in the ongoing discussions amongst these strands, an issue I try to emphasize throughout. In my thesis, I present various feminist re-interpretations of conventional theories of International Relations. After providing an overview of these different strands, I reflect on traditional political philosophy and re-conceptualize these concepts via a specifically feminist lens. By addressing the current accepted understandings of IR's core concepts - the state, its place in the international system, war, sovereignty, and IPE, I reconsider them from three different viewpoints, based on their stance towards positivist methodology, epistemology and ontology. With the help of notions presented by and typical of feminism, as is the public/private divide, I re-view the familiar concepts to then portray them from a different point of view. Gender and Media in the Age of Post-Modernity: Revealing Gender Stereotypes in the Contemporary Czech Advertising Discourse

ENGLISH SUMMARY The main objective of this thesis was to provide a complex perspective on the mutual relationship of gender and media in the age of post-modernity with a special attention to the stereotypical gender portrayal presented to us by the contemporary Czech advertising discourse. We chose to demonstrate this problematics through the methods of semiotic analysis on the analytical sample of 5 advertisements (consisting of selected TV commercials) representing various aspects of stereotypical gender images appearing in the today's Czech advertising contents. We then subjected these selected advertisements to the analytical methods in pursuit of finding the answers to the questions related to the media image of men, women and our society that the stereotypical gender depictions contained in these advertisements help to construct. Although many of these advertisements appear to be openly sexist or even misogynic on the first sight, using the mechanisms of semiotic analysis we came to a rather opposite conclusion proposing the analyzed contents are rather pro-feminine tending toward an extensive masculine critique. The beginnigs of American feminism

in English The objective of this thesis is to trace and depict the beginnings of feminist thought in America. Its aim is to show how feminist thought was developed within the Puritan/Protestant community as well as its effect on the African-Americans who were integrated into the Puritan community as an inferior race through the slave trade. The thesis uses qualitative and quantitative methods of research. A variety of primary and secondary material is used to describe the beliefs of the people in the era, such as the division of the male and female spheres of influence. The views of both men and women are provided to create a more objective description of the era and its beliefs. In addition, the subject is considered from the American point of view as well as the point of view of foreigners, such as the French historian and political thinker Alexis de Tocqueville. Furthermore, feminism is depicted in various realms of the society - in literature, in the theatre, in the political and in the social life. The quantitative methods include statistical data on wages to prove women were not fairly treated in comparison to men, as well as data from the 1860 Census to prove the drastic effects of slavery upon African-American women and the immorality within the white society's marriage institution. Women and the Question of Irish Independence

This diploma thesis deals with women who played an active part in the struggle for Irish independence in the years 1890-1921. The women who I mainly focused on weren`t mere auxiliaries to men. Even though Ireland at that time was a highly conservative country, where the role of both sexes was strictly divided, these women managed to challenge social conventions. They founded their own national organizations, which (perhaps in their size, definitely in their prominence) had then no equivalent in other European countries. They used every opportunity to assert themselves in political as well as military fields and some of them even took up high political posts. Therefore besides depicting the actual activities of women on behalf of the national movement, this work is trying to evaluate the mutual relationship between nationalism and the question of women`s emancipation. The main events of the Anglo-Irish conflict then provide the background for this work. According to this the diploma is divided chronologically into three main chapters, which deal with the periods before and after the first world war. That is because the world war contributed largely to the breakout of the Easter uprising and the following rise of a mass revolutionary movement in Ireland.
