Czech sing language comprehansion by students of secondary schools for the deaf

This diploma thesis deals with the education and communication of students with hearing impairment with a focus on the analysis of the level of understanding of information in sign language for students of special secondary schools for the hearing impaired. The theoretical part presents important concepts in this area, such as the definition of communication and communication options for the hearing impaired, as well as educational opportunities for the hearing impaired from a preschool level to a university and last but not least sign languages, their research in the world and Czech sign language as a native language of people with hearing impairment in the Czech Republic. The empirical part describes the research, which was conducted on 65 probands - high school students of the special school for students with a hearing impairment. The research is focused on the differences in the level of understanding of groups of students according to their identification data and also examined whether comprehension is affected by the complexity of the information transmitted (i.e. whether information at the level of ordinary conversation is better understood than a professional information). Iconicity in Sign Language Lexicon

The bachelor's thesis describes concepts of iconicity in semiotics, linguistics of spoken languages and linguistics of sign languages. The theoretical part is dedicated to the theory of linguistics sign, the origin of the term "icon" and "iconicity". The thesis presents different types of iconicity and puts the term iconicity into context with terms motivation, arbitrariness and convention. In conclusion of the theoretical part, the thesis introduces different types of iconic signs according to different authors. The practical part of the thesis concentrates on the form of iconicity in the lexicons of different sign languages. English-Czech Sign Language Interpreting at Czech Universities

This bachelor thesis deals with interpretation between the English language and Czech Sign Language in a university environment. The theoretical basis of the thesis defines the necessary terminology and the working languages of the interpreter, and it describes interpreting into an active foreign language and interpreting between two foreign languages, the possibilities of professional preparation and professional employability of interpreters of the English language and Czech Sign Language, as well as online interpreting and its use in university lectures. The research part focuses on a specific interpreting situation, i.e. an online lecture of foreign linguist of sign languages interpreted from the English language to Czech Sign Language. The aim of the research part was to describe a situation in interpreting between the English language and Czech Sign Language in a university environment using structured interviews with open questions conducted with someone who orders an interpretation, a foreign lecturer and interpreters and visitors of a lecture - some of whom were deaf and some of whom were hearing. i-CT Framework and Application for Sign Language Translation

The aim of this thesis was to create two applications for people with learning difficulties. The first, i-CT Framwork, is also an executable application to be used with the target group mentioned above. As an executable application, i-CT Framework operates as a central tool for managing users, applications, and user restrictions. Development of Gesture Translator application presented another aim of the thesis: this application can translate sign language gestures for people with learning difficulties. Both applications are functioning on Android as well as iOS operating systems.

Children with Specific Language Impairment and Cochlear Implant

This diploma thesis deals with specific language impairment as a risk factor of cochlear implantation. This diagnosis may fundamentally disrupt the development of speech after cochlear implantation. The main aim of this work was identification and comparison of used communication systems of persons with cochlear implant and diagnosed with developmental dysphasia. We focused on the morphological-syntactic level of language as a part of verbal level of communication. A qualitative survey was carried out at elementary schools for the hearing impaired. The research sample consisted of five pupils of these schools. Pupils were selected based on their use of the cochlear implant, diagnosed specific language impairment and other factors. Required data was obtained on the basis of observation and through the subtests of the Diagnostics of Language Development test battery. The investigation has revealed that despite cochlear implantation the preferred and more frequently used communication system is sign language. All pupils in the research group are able to communicate through spoken language, but they need to complement and support it by at least some individual elements of the sign language. Teaching English of Deaf and Hard-of-hearing University Students

This dissertation titled Teaching English to Deaf and Hard-of-hearing University Students aims to portray a picture of the situation of teaching English to university students, more specifically of those studying at Charles University in Prague. The work is divided into two main parts. The first part brings general insight, also from linguistic perspective, into language competences and language acquisition by the hearing impaired. It describes variables and possible variables affecting spoken language acquisition by this minority. It gives basic overview of different levels of hearing loss on the grouds of medicine assessment of hearing loss. The dissertiation stresses out the neccessity of educating these students with respect to linguistic research and findings. Moreover, it emphasizes the needs to interweave linguistics and pedagogy and benefits of linguistics research and methods such as error analysis and contrastive analysis for enhancement of language productive skills of hearing impaired students. Spoken and Sign Language Interpreter Training in the Czech Republic and Austria

The thesis focuses on possibilities of spoken and sign language interpreter training in the Czech Republic and Austria. The theoretical part describes the situation of the deaf in the Czech Republic and in Austria and explains the terms connected with communication of the deaf. Furthermore, it contains a brief overview of the history of spoken and sign language interpreter training and a description of the conditions for interpreters in both countries respectively. The most detailed chapters of the theoretical part deal with training institutions for spoken and sign language interpreters. The main focus is on the Institute of Translation studies at the Faculty of Arts of Charles University in Prague and the Department of Translation Studies at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of University of Graz. The empirical part presents the results of a questionnaire survey conducted among Master students of the two institutes who evaluated how well the university prepares them for their future career.

This thesis analises each linguistic book focusing on informations about sign languages, which those books included. Furthermore it focuses on the description of differences in the extent of informations about sign languages in the monitored publication. Hearing awareness majority of deaf minority

Title: Hearing Awareness majority of the deaf community Purpose: The aim was to determine the level of awareness and knowledge of the majority hearing population of minority deaf population. The research focuses on three areas: the experience of hearing population of the deaf community, the culture of deaf people and deaf communication. Methods: The questionnaire was presented to 100 respondents. Was anonymous and age of the respondents was 15 years old and unidentified. The questionnaire was self- constructed . It was a quantitative research methodology type of observation. The results of the questionnaires were collected after a personal touch, from processed and analyzed using statistical program EXCEL, and then presented in tabular and graphical form. Results: Respondents from the Ústí region have confirmed by their answers two hypotheses and one hypothesis disproved. Confirmed hypothesis related to personal experiences with the hearing majority deaf community. Personal experience of respondents in excess of 50%, even moved above this high a percentage point. The remaining two hypotheses concerning the communication and culture of deaf people (both 50%), were refuted, since awareness of respondents was not so good.
