Linguistic tools in French political discourse.

The aim of this thesis is to contribute to the knowledge of linguistic tools typical for French political discourse. The thesis is based on an analysis of selected political speeches of former French President Nicolas Sarkozy. It tries to capture how a change in a specific political situation of a particular author can affect communicative strategies, discursive practices, and then select the linguistic tools due to the addressee in a particular communicative situation and the communicative intention. The first part of the thesis is focused on the rhetoric and stylistics, which contribute to the typological definition of texts falling within the French political discourse. The second part is based on an analysis of three essential political speeches Nicolas Sarkozy.

The birth of an industry

The aim of this thesis is to translate the chapter The birth of an industry written by Douglas Bruster for the publication The Cambridge History of British Theatre. This thesis further contains a commentary of the translation. The first part of the commentary is devoted to translation analysis of the original text, the second part concentrates on description of the translation problems and their solutions. This thesis is concluded by a typology of translation shifts.

The aim of my thesis was to translate into Czech the first twenty standard pages from the chapter La la la Through a New Lens: Music Talks to America by John McWhorter, and provide the translation with a commentary. The commentary comprises four parts: The first part is a translation analysis, presenting extra- and intratextual factors of the source text, and outlining conception of the translation; the second part contents typology of problems and challenges, consisting in expression and word non-equivalence, cultural non-equivalence, and translation of specific features of the source text; the third part summarizes the types of shifts occuring in the translation, and the last part describes the translation method. This bachelor's thesis consists of the translation of the first part of the book A Story of England by the British author Christopher Hibbert and a commentary including translation analysis, the description of the translation method and the description of translation problems and shifts. The first part of the book deals with the history of England from the Neolithic times to 1066. It focuses mainly on the individual waves of immigration. It is a popular scientific text characterized by a number of terms, facts from British life, complex phrases, participles and a complex syntax. Commented translation:Introductory: Language Defined (E.Sapir: Language: An Introductionto the Study of Speech, 1921)

The thesis consists of a Czech translation of the first chapter, Introductory: Language Defined, from Language: An Introduction to the Study of Speech (New York: 1921, Harcourt, Brace and Company) by Edward Sapir and of a commentary on the translation. The commentary consists of a translation analysis of the source text, typology of translation problems and their solutions, and typology of translation shifts. The translation method was chosen based on the analysis, which was based on the method of Ch. Nord. The main objective of the translation was to preserve the informative function of the source text and it's style with regard to the documentary function of the translation and the conventions and constraints of the target language.

Language of contemporary czech fantastic literature

in English This thesis is a language analysis of the following books: Sladká jak krev and Psí zima written by Petra Neomillnerová and Zlatý kříž and Beton, kosti a sny from Pavel Renčín. Biggest emphasis is placed on the use of the wordage. It throughly describes use of slang, prefessionalism and professional terminology from different enviroments. Further it deals with comparisons, expresions, less traditional word-stock procedures, stylistical peculiarities and other problematics. Examined language phenomenon is always clarified in each chapter. It's occurence and significance is documented with numerous quotations from the above mentioned books. Author's intentions is to demonstrate the richness of language in czech fantasy literature.

Annotated translation: Do Women Pay for German Reunification?

The thesis focuses on translation of an extract of a dialogue from the book called Bezahlen die Frauen die Wiedervereinigung? and on commentary on this translation. Apart from the Introduction and Conclusion there are two parts that play central role: the Translation itself and the above mentioned Commentary. The Commentary consists of four chapters. Translation Analysis of the Original Text Based on Ch. Nord's Model describes extratextual and intratextual factors of the original text. Features of the Original Text and First Insights into Problems of Translation takes functional-structuralist approach, describing different levels of the language used, focuses on tricky parts in the translation and thus links the analysis of the original with the translation. Method of Translation sets strategy for the translation of the original, based on conclusions of the two previous chapters. Typology of Translation Solutions and Unavoidable Shifts - Concrete Examples puts the method into practice, gives examples and comments on problems.

This thesis consists of a transaltion of a chapter written by the American feminist art historian Linda Nochlin called Women Artists Then and Now: Painting, Sculpture and the Image of the Self from Global Feminism: New Directions in Contemporary Art and a commentary on various aspects of the process. The concept of translation was created upon the basis of an extratextual and intratextual analysis, and the following principles for work with the text were layed down: The fact, that the percipient of the original and the translation text differ in their cultural backgrounds, is considered in the translation, and names which are less known in Europe are accompanied with intratextual explanatory notes. The publicistic genre disposes of different means in the source and the target languague. The high level of expresivity and subjectivity of the originial text is substituded by more formal means in Czech which, nonetheless, provide the same function and therefore represent functional substitution. These steps lead to preservation of the thematic content and the effect of the translation on the percipient is the same as that of the original text on the original reader.
