Sleep and dream in the Czech picture of the world

The thesis focuses on the conceptual area of sleeping (including waking, dreaming etc.) based on the theories and methods of the cognitive-cultural approach to language. The first chapter deals with the human experience of sleeping. The conceptual area is interpreted both in relation to physical experience and as a part of the Central European cultural code. The second chapter concentrates on the concept and the approach of the linguistic picture of the world (e.g. Bartmiński, 2012), the detection and verification of the semantic connotations method (Bartmiński, Panasiuk, 2001), the conceptual metaphor theory (Lakoff, Johnson, 1980/2002), the cognitive conception of metonymy (cf. ibid), and the interaction between metaphor and metonymy (i.e. metaphtonymy, Goosens, 1990, 2002). The third chapter is based on the linguistic data excerpted from various Czech dictionaries and describes the conceptual area. First are introduced derivational nests, then relevant semantic relations and etymology of the selected terms (spát, bdít etc.). The chapter also analyses polysemy of the selected terms in detail, as well as polysemy of their derivatives. Reality and dream

Žemlová, M.: Reality and dream. [Diploma thesis] Prague 2016 - Charles University in Prague, Faculty of Education, Art Education Department, p. 91, (annexes: two pieces of own art work) The subject of this thesis is an individual concept of the main theme - reality and dream. The author sees this theme through her own intensive experience, connecting it with the pedagogical practice and fine art. The thesis is divided into three parts, where the first, theoretical, discusses imaging of themes connected with a woman and motherhood, offering a parallel of the traditional male view and female concept of the present. The didactic part brings a search for the ideal way - dream - in an environment hostile to art education at private vocational school. The practical part presents the author's own art work reflecting her personal experience with motherhood. Dream and painting in Czech art in 1930s

One of the main goals of the thesis entitled Dreams and Painting in Czech Art in 1930s is to describe the relationship between dreams and fine arts. Through studding artists' approach to this topic and analyzing their works of art I want to explain in which way and to what degree dreams can influence art. The paper is focusing only on Czech artistic scene where some artists belonged to the Surrealist movement. As distinct from the French scene, in Czechoslovakia not only Surrealists were interested and inspirited by unconsciousness. The described pictures use various techniques of painting, drawing, collage and photography. The artists capture dreams' imagery or fill the painting with a dreamlike atmosphere. The first chapter is a theoretical introduction to the adaptation of dreams by art. It acquaints the reader with the groundbreaking work The Interpretation of Dreams (1900) written by Sigmund Freud. It also deals with the reaction other writers had to this publication. The second chapter deals with the illusions of dreams (the motif which is often repeated in Jindřich Štyrský's work and refers to his childhood) that is characterized as object-phantom. Prenatal dreams tchämong in Korea

The aim of this thesis is to present tchämong, a specific Korean dream of conception, that if properly interpretated can provide some information pertaining to the conception and other qualities of the unborn child to the dreamer. This thesis contextualizes tchämong into a broader category of dreams of conception, and then focuses on its specific features in Korea's culture. The fundamental aim of this paper is to exemplify the claim that tchämong is embedded in the system of traditional beliefs, practices and myths, which act as a main factor in continuing this tradition into modern times. The primary focus is given to tchämong within the framework of pregnancy practices and beliefs and close relation between tchämong and myths, which is expressed especially in its symbolism.

The Motif of Dream in Selected Texts of 19th Century Czech Literature (Zeyer - Mácha - Erben)

This thesis examines the subject of dreams in fiction, focusing on selected Czech authors of the 19th century. In the selected titles of Czech writers (Karel Hynek Mácha, Karel Jaromír Erben, Julius Zeyer), the attention is paid primarily to the motif of dream. The emphasis is placed on the meaning of dreams in particular works (Mácha - Pouť krkonošská; Erben - Kytice; Zeyer - Dům U tonoucí hvězdy, Blaho v zahradě kvetoucích broskví, Stratonika, Jan Maria Plojhar, Radúz a Mahulena) and its possible use in the story. The thesis also evaluates the various forms and concepts of this literary theme. In the particular works, dreams have a different function, and therefore the thesis chose a comparative method between the single texts. The thesis aims to track both common and different elements of dream in the selected works. Throughout the text, the main focus is directed to the analysis of dreams, dreaming and used symbolism. The conclusion summarizes the main findings concerning the meaning of the cited dreams, especially in the context of the content of a particular work. Surrealistic Moments in Raymond Queneau's Novels

Surrealistic Moments in Raymond Queneau's Novels The objective of this thesis is to study the connection between Raymond Queneau's novels and surrealism. Raymond Queneau was part of the surrealistic group for only a relatively short time and after he left it, he fully rejected the surrealistic movement and concentrated his literary output in another direction. Nevertheless, there are surrealistic moments to be found in his work, on which this thesis will focus. The thesis contains a brief characterisation of surrealism as a literary movement and a basic overview of Raymond Queneau's life and the structure of his works. Special focus is given to the part of the author's life when he was active in the surrealistic group. The thesis further studies the period of time when Raymond Queneau was no longer part of the surrealistic group and when he turned his attention to completely different literary aspects of his production and participated in the work of other literary groups, whose methods differed substantially from the methods of surrealism (Oulipo); special focus is given to the significant aspects of the author's output, i.e. emphasis on the literary form, structure and order of his works. Dream about the Paradise on Earth in the Work of Dostojevskij

The dream about an earthly paradise, rediscovery of an original, absolutely harmonic paradisal life is, in Dostoevskij's opinion, one of the deepest and the most valuable dreams of the human heart. The spiritual course of any human being has its own history, it is born from thesis (babtism), goes through antithesis (crises) and finishes in synthesis (beauty). A man comes from the Eden Paradise and aims at heaven. So, a man in course of his spiritual life is in a real split into two paradises: the Eden Paradise from which he is coming from and the Kingdom of God where he is aiming at. The midpoint of the life course is accompanied by a crisis, that can also be described as separation from the the paradise. The characters of novels by Dostoevskij failed due to the fact, that they were not able to admit their presence between two "paradise states" and so their ideas about earthly paradise establishment were being corrupted. The purpose of my dissertation is to analyze and further elaborate upon its main topic: the questions that are of a mutual deep interest to both medicine and philosophy. The dissertation has three parts. In the first part, I will introduce some of the key terms that will be used throughout the text. The second part, central to my work, is concerned with three possibilities that are offered to us - play and playing, dream and dreaming, poetic being - all become the places where comprehending, listening (to both the speech and the silence) and responding materialize. Playing, dreaming, poetic being - each offers our daily reality the beauty of transcending its borders without destroying them; in fact, they become a free spirited, passionate interest that enhances and makes valuable the ordinariness and finiteness of our daily lives. Freedom and Responsibility; I and the Other Person; Illness and Hope - each having its physical aspect and each being considered through the dimensions of seriousness and unseriousness, reason and unreason - will be rethought through playing, dreaming and poetic being, providing new insights of an engaged, passionate practice of philosophy and medicine.
