The Business-Related and Logistical Challenges of Entering the African Solar Market. Illustrated on the Example of Solarity.
Widauer, Philipp ; Vinš, Marek (advisor) ; Kolář, Petr (referee)
The thesis evaluates the principal business-related and logistical opportunities and risks on the African solar market which is often associated to offer the last unexploited economic opportunities on this planet. For this purpose, the author examines three major African trade unions and reviews the strengths and weaknesses of each regional coalition. It becomes obvious that each respective trade bloc contains one dominant player, in this case Nigeria, Kenya and South Africa. The practical section starts with an analysis of the appropriate entry market for the Czech solar wholesaler Solarity. Subsequently, the author identifies South Africa as the best fitting market primarily because of good infrastructure, high purchasing power and a similar business culture. The author recommends that Solarity should apply an exporting entry mode due to its size and inexperience on the African market. Secondary research, first-hand experience and close cooperation with Solarity support the author in his final conclusions.

The second chapter deals with the fair trade movement, the third part examines the concrete industry in the particular country, and the last chapter studies the consequences of fair trade on producers in the Sub-Saharan region.

The report has three chapters. Chapter 1 summarizes the main features of the Kenyan economy relevant for building the FPAS. Chapter 2 presents the structural macroeconomic model and its properties captured by the decompositions of variances of the model’s variables in terms of the model shocks and by its impulse-response functions. This chapter also describes Bayesian vector autoregressions used for the near-term forecasting. Chapter 3 evaluates how the models perform empirically. The forecasting power is assessed both in the sample and by using an out-of-the-sample comparison with the standard random-walk benchmark. We conclude that the FPAS performs satisfactorily in this comparison.
Flower production in the developing world: the case of Kenya
Lomozová, Kateřina ; Pavlík, Petr (advisor) ; De Castro, Tereza (referee)
The thesis examines the Kenya's cut-flower industry in the wider context of global commodity networks. The Kenya's floriculture sector as a part of these networks has been influenced by notions of environmental and social responsibility in the past two decades. The first part of the thesis describes floriculture in Kenya and the cut flower supply chain. The second half analyses current ethical trading practice in the flower industry in Kenya. In this respect codes of conduct which embody notions of responsible business in practice are discussed here. In view of the fact that codes can't guarantee adequate working conditions to flower farm workers in many cases the thesis tries to explain why this concept of ethical trade failed.
The road to independence and democratization in Kenya and development in the 21st century
Dejmková, Kamila ; Volenec, Otakar (advisor) ; Kochan, Jan (referee)
The aim of my Thesis is to analyze the way how Kenya gained independence, how the process of democratization had conducted and the development in the 21th century. The reason for the focus on Kenya is that it is a country which I am interested in and I want to get the new information. The work is divided into five chapters. The first chapter gives information about the current economic, geographic, demographic and political situation in the country. The second chapter focuses on the historical development till 1944. Includes description of the oldest inhabitants of the planet Earth, the original inhabitants of the country, settlers and colonizers. Year 1944 is chosen deliberately, this is the year when first Kenya had been elected to the National Assembly. The third chapter deals with the situation in the country until 1963, when the country was granted independence. This chapter deals with the rebellion Mau - Mau, congresses at which was discussed the constitution of an independent country, important personal proces sof independence - the first and the second president Jomo Kennyat and Daniel Arap Moi's regime. The fourth chapter gives information about the process of democratization. Here I describe how the process of democratization in Kenya had conducted and all the things that happened in the country since independence. The fifth chapter seeks to answer the question of why we can not say that Kenya is a democratic state. Describe here the notion of tribalism, which has a major impact on what is happening in the country. The members of the nation are loyal to their ethnicity in any case, and therefore it is not possible to develop democracy in the country in the literal sense.
