Media coverage of the self-immolation of Jan Palach in Rudé právo, Reportér and Zprávy
Kaňková, Kateřina ; Suk, Pavel (referee) ; Končelík, Jakub (advisor)
Diploma thesis Media coverage of the self-immolation of Jan Palach in Rude pravo, Reporter and Zpravy attempts to show how the ruling ideology influences the media coverage of an event by analyzing newspaper articles from three different periodicals (Rude pravo, Reporter, Zpravy). In this case, the event is Jan Palach's protest against the political and social situation in Czechoslovakia after the arrival of the Warsaw Pact troops in August 1968. Palach performed his protest in January 1969 inspired by the form of self-immolation displayed by Buddhist monks in Tibet. It appears that the political situation at that time can be characterized as a transformation from democracy to tatalitarianism. The official newspaper of the Communist Party Rude pravo was neither using censorship nor distorting reality. It captured the events essentially as they had been running, though there were no arguments or comments. The comparison of Rude pravo with the other two newspapers, Reporter, representing pro-reform democratic media, and Zpravy, representing totalitarian media, reveals the fact that articles in Rude pravo were neutral.

Marková, Lenka ; Mocná, Dagmar (referee) ; Peterka, Josef (advisor)
The aim of the thesis was to discover the processes of Arnošt Lustig's interference into his previously published work and giving them the final form. The author of this paper was interested in the changes being only supplementary additions of the story or if the meaning is significantly influenced by writer's editing. At the same time, the question about the reason, function and meaning of the changes was raised. For the research three Lustig's books, were chosen: Noc a naděje, Modlitba pro Kateřinu Horovitzovou and Dita Saxová. They slightly vary in genre. The first chapter Poetics of Arnošt Lustig deals with Judaism as his inspiration, context of the time period in which he was active - the second wave of War prose, the topics of his prose being rather mono-thematically from Jewish background and with his characters, weak and humiliated people who remain moral winners although they often die. The second, third and fourth chapter are more about individual books. Their first publication is compared with the last one. The added texts are then sequenced into logical units, described and commented. All chapters contain short conclusion. The last closing chapter presents the results of the thesis. Lustig's rewriting of published text does not have any strong influence on the story flow. The passages added are...

Beňušková, Lucia ; Sládek, Karel (advisor) ; Štica, Petr (referee)
Dissertation "Biblical foundations of ecological spirituality" is an attempt to answer the need for exploration of the signs of our times - devastation of our existing environment caused by an estrangement of humanity from nature, resulting from alienation from God and human beings. Similarly, it is a reaction to the criticism of the Christianity incited by ecologists and naturalists. Dissertation's positum consists of exegesis of the fundamental biblical texts referring to creation of the world and humanity, their following reinterpretation emerging from the stimuli of naturalists and ecologists. Application of the specific solution can be inspired by some of the patterns of ecologically lived spirituality from the Christian history, resulting in the concept of particular theological models. These models represent the synthesis of ethics, ecology and theology. Realisation of the ecological spirituality is outlined in some of the theological aspects of faith of the practising Christian. Harmony of practice of the Christian spirituality and the eco-awareness facilitates the journey towards the renewal of the fundamental relationship God - humanity and nature and at the same time solves the ecological crisis of the secular society. Personality and historical conception of culture in the work of Vaclav Cerny
Klinecký, Tomáš ; Czumalo, Vladimír (advisor) ; Soukup, Václav (referee)
The aim of this dissertation is an attempt to take a portrait of the influence of culture on a personality of a concrete person. Culture is understood here in an anthropological perspective, so that it concerns not only with art but also with an overall situation of man in the world. In this perspective, our paper suggests, man asks questions about the meaning of the world and the human life. The personality our paper focuses on is Vaclav Cerny who was teacher, literary scientist and literary critic, writer and last but not least public-engaged personality. Vaclav Cerny, in our opinion, was the one person who maximalized the influence of culture on the life of an individual, which we hopefully have sufficiently presented in the paper. Our paper is a monography. The paper goes through fundamental milestones of Cerny's life, inspiring personalities and intellectual trends which had a lifelong influence on him. Then it comes to the fundamental terminilogy on which Cerny based his understanding of history of culture and history of man. All this we observed in a chronological dimension and in this context we reflected eventual differences or refinements in Cerny's terminology. We devoted a special attention to Cerny's work with the text both as a writer and as a critic. We consider the monumental work Memoirs a...

The Box Full of Light
Přibylová, Květoslava ; RŮŽIČKOVÁ, Alice (advisor) ; ŘEZNÍČEK, Martin (referee)
In my thesis A Box Full of Light, Personality and Thoughts of Niels Bohr as an Inspiration for Science Documentaries, I look, as a documentary film director, at the basic principles and visualizations of the characteristic contemporary popular-science documentaries. I consider this form of documentary film for the most part bleak, often flat and lacking in any kind of progress. I am attempting to unravel where these tendencies come from and show, that they strongly relate to the general notion of science, which stands on the foundations of Newton-Carthesian paradigma. Especially in the area of ideals of measurableness, objectivity and mathematization. At the same time I also contemplate the relationship of knowledge and power, of science as a certain ideology and so also the connection between science documentary and ideological film. In the second part of this thesis I look for inspiration for artistically more progressive, richer and more multi-layered documentary films about science. I find this inspiration in the thoughts of the Danish physicist and philosopher Niels Bohr.
