This master’s thesis deals in the development of jazz in terms of traditional and new and innovative influences especially from the perspective of a professional jazz musician acting on the Czech jazz scene. So mapping the general influence of traditions and innovations in the world and deeply deals with the influence of the Czech jazz musicians across generations.
Philly Joes Jones as a leader on records between the years 1958 - 1968

The topic of the thesis is about a personal life and musical career of a great drummer Philly Joe Jones, who has become a crucial person of the jazz era. The goal of this thesis is to understand his drumming language and to find out how successful he was as a band leader. First part of the thesis describes his personal life and music development. At the second part of thesis we can find the list of recordings that he made as a leader between the years 1958 – 1968. There are also listed particular transcriptions of his drum solos, which were analysed. As a result of the thesis is that the recordings of him as a leader are not significant, but his drumming language is unique. Rudimental drumming and licks of Philly Joe Jones and licks are still alive nowadays.
Composition Elements in the Work of Pat Metheny

This work deals with the analysis of compositions by Pat Metheny from his early work. The aim of the analysis is to specify individual compositional elements, to describe their role in specific compositions and to evaluate how they interact and complement each other. The output of the thesis will be an analysis of the composition intention itself supplemented by the acquired experience.

The theme of popular music in regional newspapers of contemporary Karlovy Vary region in the period 1957-1967

The dissertation Topic of popular music in the local press of contemporary Karlovy Vary region in the period 1957 - 1967 attempts to capture the process of official views presented in the regional press between the years 1957 - 1967 in the territory of today's Karlovy Vary Region on various genres of modern music, represented by mainstream dance music which later evolved into popular music. Articles, reviews and critiques relevant to modern music published in newspapers in area of Karlovy Vary and specialist publications dedicated to particular cultural issues in the region was used for the research. Furthermore, it was primarily jazz and rock music in Czechoslovakia known as big beat (bigbít). The introduction deals with the theoretical and methodological issues appropriate to the topic and their possible use. The next part deals with the social and cultural context in Czechoslovakia at that time, the influence of ideology on culture and simultaneously on releasing in art and society during the 1960s. An overview of contextualization within postwar (World War II) official press, the situation regarding modern music in Karlovy Vary regional press in the period 1948 - 1956 and also archival documents that are related to the topic of work are mentioned in the second part. Cultural Life in the Theresienstadt Ghetto in Memory of Witnesses

This thesis, Cultural life in Terezin ghetto through the eyes of witnesses, is focused on cultural activities of Terezin prisoners with emphasis on sports, theatre and music. In the initial phase of the thesis I focus on the town of Terezin, from its foundation through the transformation into the ghetto up until its liquidation in 1945. Then follows the core work - Terezin culture. Individual subchapters are gradually dedicated to sports, music, theater and children's artwork as well. The goal of the thesis is an effort to transfer all the acquired findings into the ghetto environment, which should also be the core work of the thesis. I have gathered the necessary information on this issue from the Malach visual history archive, which is a source contatining several tens of thousands eyewitness accounts given by the surviving victims. In my thesis I am trying to connect information gathered from professional literature with the information gathered from the Malach archive. The whole thesis should provide a complete view of the cultural activities in Terezin while taking experiences and memories of the survivors into account.
George Gershwin: Concerto in F for piano and orchestra

HOREJŠOVÁ, Martina: George Gershwin: Concerto in F for piano and orchestra [Diploma thesis]. Charles University in Prague. Faculty of Arts. Institute of Musicology. Supervisor: prof. PhDr. Jarmila Gabrielová, CSc. Prague 2016. The main theme of the diploma thesis is a musical analysis of Concerto in F - the only Gershwin's piano concert from 1925. This diploma thesis also contains information about composer's life, contemporary historical context with relation to American cultural, social and political climate. As well text includes contemporary musical production, which influenced Gershwin's compositional technique. There will also be a comparison between George Gershwin and two other composers (Sergei Rachmaninoff and Maurice Ravel) who also created concert for piano and orchestra in the early 20th century.
The Role of Jazz in U.S. Cultural Diplomacy During the Cold War

This Bachelor thesis deals with the role of jazz diplomacy within American cultural policy during the Cold War era. It depicts how jazz music was used as an effective tool to shape a positive image of the USA abroad in the midst of Cold War conflicts. The theoretical concepts which underlie this thesis are cultural diplomacy as a component of public diplomacy, and the concept of "soft power". This thesis also examines the function of African-Americans as official jazz ambassadors of the US. The aim of the thesis is to determine the impact of jazz diplomacy in particular countries of the Eastern Bloc. It stresses the importance of Voice of America radio broadcasts in the context of the influence of jazz on foreign audiences. The thesis comes to the conclusion that the impact of American jazz music on Eastern Bloc countries was substantial and it also affirms the importance of culture within public diplomacy.
London and Paris: The Influence of the so called "Americanization" on West European Metropolises in the 1920s

(English) The aim of the thesis is to analyze socio-cultural changes which affected France and Great Britain during 1920s. By examples of two West European Metropolises - London and Paris - are studied causes and effects of dynamic character of the time after the World War I, which was influenced by the role of the United States of America. The post-war influence of the USA, more precisely Americans, in Europe caused enthusiasm, as well as fear of the so- called Americanization. The French and the British, during "les Années folles" or "Roaring Twenties" had to deal with economic and political problems; societies in both countries changed the lifestyle permanently. Besides other things, modern way of life brought about the consumer culture, the emancipation of women and new way of spending of leisure time (including sport activities and visiting cinemas). Jazz set musical rhythm of the interwar period and George Gershwin became one of the important personalities of popular and classical music.
Jazz in French Literature

Jazz in the French literature is not a typical subject of academic papers perhaps due to the fact that the matter of jazz is generally assigned to the American culture. The aim of this work is to prove that even though jazz is established both from the aesthetic and mental aspect on the principles substantially different from the European cultural tradition, it is a topic which has been richly elaborated on in the French literature. In the first part of this work we provide a complex insight into those principles as well as on the possibility of the transfer of jazz into literature. In the second part we describe the coming together of jazz and the French culture and its presence in selected literary works of Pascal Quignard, Boris Vian, Philippe Soupault and Jean Cocteau. The final analysis of the life and work of Christian Gailly serves as evidence that the jazz makes the French literature approachable for the world, resulting in a text which is at the same time lively and unconventional both from the formal and substantive point of view.
