A Congregation of Jackals: The Translation and Stylistic Analysis of Two Chapters of the Novel
Varga, Jan ; Ženíšek, Jakub (advisor) ; Lancová, Klára (referee)
This bachelor thesis focuses on the translation of selected parts of a novel from English language into Czech Language. Three chapters from the novel A Congregation of Jackals, written by American author Steven Craig Zahler, were selected deliberately for the purpose of the translation with an eye on their artistic and linguistic properties. The first chapter was chosen from the very beginning of the novel, the other ones come from its first half. The practical part of the thesis consists of the translation itself. This is previewed by a brief introductory chapter that takes a cursory glance at the basic principles of translation theory. The analytical part examines the theoretical grounding of the translating process and identifies some specific issues which were encountered during the translation. In doing so, it seeks to substantiate the practical solutions in the practical part with the reference to theoretical sources that had been consulted either prior to or throughout the translation process.
J. D. Salinger's "A Perfect Day for Bananafish" Translation. Linguo-stylistic Analysis
Válková, Veronika ; Hirschová, Milada (advisor) ; Holanová, Radka (referee)
This thesis aims to analyse several translations of J.D. Salinger's short story A Perfect Day for Bananafish: namely two translations and two edited versions of the latter one. The contrastive view is used to discern the main differences in meaning of the original and the translated texts. There are several points of view adopted to recognise the differences. On the syntactic level, the contrast between the texts was found to be present in the treatment of the author's style, predominantly in the narrative perspective. Not employing nominal structures a great deal, the author's style was not lost in the translation process. Comparing the translated texts, a tendency to adhere to the syntactic surface structure of the original text was found in the less recent versions. Another level of analysis explored the temporal relations of the texts, with the original text relying mostly on structures expressing sequences of events and also simultaneity of events, but not the perfective aspect to a great degree. These time relations are also found to be communicated in the translated texts successfully. It is not only the narrator that is discussed in this thesis, as a great portion of the short story consist of dialogues. The analysis aimed, using certain excerpts of the story, to find to what degree...

Testing equivalence and noninferiority
Rychterová, Nela ; Antoch, Jaromír (advisor) ; Omelka, Marek (referee)
This master thesis deals with topics related to the task whether customers are able to recognize a difference between products. First, testing of equivalence and non-inferiority is discussed in detail. It is an important tool when verifying that two products are equivalent or that a new product is not substantially worse than a current product. Afterwards, Thurstone's approach is introduced as a way to evaluate the impact of a stimulus on human senses. Subsequently, using the previous chapters, there is a detailed discussion dealing with three standards wi- dely used in practice in the case when someone needs to apply sensory evaluation to verify whether customers are able to recognize a difference between products. In particular, these are duo-trio, triangle and paired comparison tests. There is a thorough explanation of their statistical base and the tests are compared accor- ding to their power. Furthermore, an approach based on the Thurstone's theory is introduced as an alternative to the standard methods. Moreover, this thesis introduces Saaty's approach to the estimation of a priority vector, which is a useful tool to compare, to order or to choose the best one from n objects. We also introduce another approach to estimation of a priority vector which is based on Saaty's idea. 1

Solidarity and equivalence in the pension system
KELLEROVÁ, Michaela
The basic compulsory pension insurance in the Czech Republic is based on a solidarity principle, it is benefit-based and financed continuously, it is universal and secures all the economically active people. Due to a present demographic development, the pension system in the Czech Republic is, as well as in most of European countries, financially unsustainable in the long term with a present parameters setting. The pensions from the first pillar will not be sufficient for future pensioners due to the population ageing. Therefore there is a trend of strengthening the principle of equivalence through the development of the second and third pillars of the pension insurance in European pension systems in the framework of the pension reforms systems. The bachelor thesis is divided into a theoretical and practical part. The theoretical part defines the place of the pension system in the social security and its principles of solidarity and equivalence. The practical part is based on the quantitative research. A method of interviewing through a questionnaire was used for data collecting. The survey tool was focused on the respondents´ opinions on the present system in CR. The aim of the thesis is to provide the point of view of the citizens of the pension security and answer the questions whether the financial security of people about to retire should be fully provided by the state and whether they find the present pension system fair. To complete the aim, two hypotheses were set and these were verified by the survey. It was concluded that people do not think it should be only the state to take care of them but they try to take care of themselves by their own means. They do not consider the pension system fair and they criticise its too wide solidarity. The outputs of this bachelor thesis might serve as a topic for a further survey as well as a sociological research for investigating the citizens´ opinions on the pension reform support.
