The Role of Portugal in the Security Policy of the United States of America (1943-1949)
Malý, Karel ; Koura, Jan (advisor) ; Valkoun, Jaroslav (referee)
Bachelor thesis The Role of Portugal in the Security Policy of the United States of America (1943-1949) analyses the relationship between United States of America and Portugal during second world war and in following postwar period. Portugal in wartime Europe defined itself as a neutral state. Salazar's cautious foreign policy deceived either Great Britain and Germany. Great Britain was seen by Salazar as naval world power and traditional ally. Germany in Salazar's view was powerful state capable of confront the Soviet threat in the middle Europe. Western allies since the war began has shown the interest of the geostrategic significant Azores Islands. Salazar's major focus was to keep his country neutral, as he rejected to lend the army bases at the Azores Islands to the Western Allies. At the end of the war, when the German defeat was evident, Salazar allowed to use and lent the bases at the Azores to USA. Portugal became valuable partner in the security policy of the USA. Its role gained the importance even after the second world war, when the democratic values were in threat by the Soviet union. The establishment of the NATO was reaction on this particular menace, and one of the founder member of this alliance was Portugal as well as USA.
Media Transformation in Portugal after the Carnation Revolution
Kotasová, Martina ; Hanzal, Jaromír (advisor) ; Trampota, Tomáš (referee)
This thesis analyzes how the media system and the role of the media in society have changed over time in Portugal. It focuses on the period of the dictatorship Estado Novo, the period of the media transition after the Carnation Revolution, and the media in the 21st century. Since the media transition would not be possible without the political transition of the authoritarian regime, this thesis will also address the overall context of the transition. The theoretical part analyzes the Mediterranean or polarized pluralist model of media from Halllin and Mancini. According to the authors, this model describes the current Portuguese media system. The aim of this thesis is to determine whether the model is applicable to all periods of Portuguese history of the 20 and 21st century or whether at some point the media system can be described by another Hallin and Mancini's model or whether it is necessary to use a different classification from other authors.

Godunov, Ivan ; Burcin, Boris (advisor) ; Koňařík, Martin (referee)
Comparison of official life tables construction in selected countries Abstract The main goal of this work is to analyze the methods used by the selected statistical offices in the construction of mortality tables. This work explored fundamental differences regarding the type of published life tables and parameters estimation methods. The theoretical part provides an overview of basic methodological information and description of methodology used, which was acquired during communicating with the selected statistical offices. During the analysis it was found that the differences in calculating the various functions of life tables are minimal, so the analytical part is mainly devoted to methods of estimating the probability of death at age 0 and smoothing of probability of death in older age. Acquired procedures and methods were applied to the data for the Czech Republic for year 2010, which allowed the comparison itself. The final part is the overall evaluation of achieved results, where can be also found commentaries on selected procedures and methods. The analysis shows that the most widely used type is a detailed cross-sectional life table. The most appropriate models of smoothing mortality curve are Kannistö-Thatcher (UK) Martinellův model (Sweden) and Kannistö (Canada). On the other side, the least...

Legal regulation of ad hoc and institutional international arbitration in the Czech Republic and Portugal
Přib, Jan ; Růžička, Květoslav (advisor) ; Kučera, Zdeněk (referee)
This rigorous work deals with the analysis of legal regulation of ad hoc and institutional international arbitration in the Czech Republic and Portugal. It processes individual elements of (international) arbitration, such as the dispute arbitrability, prerequisites of the arbitration agreement, the function of an arbitrator, arbitration proceedings, arbitration awards and their enforcement, as well as other facts relevant to the international arbitration. The work also analyses the rules of arbitration of the permanent arbitration courts, which are in the Czech Republic and Portugal authorized to solve international disputes. In this context, it is worth noting that in terms of rules of arbitration of the Portuguese arbitration centres, these were from the Czech point of view almost unexplored areas. This was indeed one of the reasons for the choice of such subject. The aim of this work is not to provide only a "rough" description, respectively to quote the relevant legal provisions, however to provide detailed analysis of problems where they could occur due to the ambiguous wording, non-constant or non-existing judicial decisions or from other reasons. Therefore, the goals of the work are to provide the reader a comprehensive view on ad hoc and institutional international arbitration in the Czech...
Portugal and Jewish Refugees from Nazism
Kraftová, Pamela ; Binková, Simona (advisor) ; Grauová, Šárka (referee)
The subject of my bachelor's thesis is Portuguese attitude towards Jewish refugees during the Second World War. Portugal has in the course of time transformed from an inquisition-happy into a tolerant country. The rise of the German Nazi regime and the outbreak of Second World War had caused a diaspora which led Portugal into applying restrictive immigration and visa policies. After France lost the war Portugal has become one of few destinations and transfer points for refugees from Nazi occupied Europe. Thousands of Jewish refugees have found refuge in a country which was governed by an anti-liberal and non-democratic regime. The regime had a few common similarities with Third Reich such as tough anti-Communism and anti-liberalism. The absence of racism and anti-Semitism in "Estado Novo" was on the other hand the differentiation between those two regimes. This absence also enabled Jewish immigration into Portugal during 1930s and 1940s. The main focus of my thesis is the attitude of Salazar, Portuguese offices, the Portuguese public and foremost the Portuguese diplomacy towards persecuted Jews.
Was improper monetary policy the cause of real estate bubbles in Eurozone peripheral countries?: implications for future policy
Tobek, Ondřej ; Hlaváček, Michal (advisor) ; Franče, Václav (referee)
This study is concerned with two interconnected issues. First, the suitability of interest rate chosen by ECB is assessed in individual Eurozone countries using seven versions of Taylor rule. The methodology primarily emphasizes robustness by employment of various measures of inflation and output gap. The policy rates were found to be too low in all Eurozone's peripheral countries for prolonged period of time. Second, the sensitivity of real estate prices to a change in interest rate in Greece, Ireland, Italy, Portugal, Spain and UK is estimated using VAR, VECM, BVAR and Panel VAR. The prime concern is whether the low policy rates can be the cause of housing bubbles. The housing prices respond most vividly to interest rate in Ireland, Spain and UK (approximately 3.5% increase in the price as a response to 1% decrease in interest rate) which are also the countries where flexible interest rate mortgages are dominant. Monetary policy is shown to be an important determinant of housing prices but it is not the sole reason for the bubbles.
