The Media Image of Murder of Otýlie Vranská in the Czech Contemporary Press

The diploma thesis called The Media Image of Murder of Otýlie Vranská in the Czech Contemporary Press is dealing with the analysis of the serious press represented by daily newspaper Národní listy and with the analysis of the tabloid press represented by daily newspaper Expres in the selected period from September 1933 to February 1934. The analysis focuses on the news articles about the murder of Otýlie Vranská. She was murdered on 1st of September 1933, her corpse was quartered and sent to Slovakia in two suitcases − one suitcase was found in Bratislava and second in Košice. Both types of periodicals published 96 articles all together. The diploma thesis is divided into two main parts. Theoretical part, which is focused on definition of the First Czechoslovak Republic's period as well as introducing topics such as criminality and press in the First Czechoslovak Republic. In the end of this chapter there is a presentation of the life and death of Otýlie Vranská from an expert point of view. The second, practical part includes mentioned analysis of the news items, which comes after the definition of the key term: the social construction of reality and the definition of the chosen method: the comparative narrative analysis.
Women Pianists at the Prague Conservatory during the First Czechoslovak Republic

This thesis follows engagement of female pianists at Prague Conservatoire during the period of the First Czechoslovak Republic. The catalouge of newspapers and magazines articles excerpts which is stored in archive of the Prague Conservatoire became an important source in the understanding of how these women were viewed. These excerpts are for the most part of Prague provenience and they contain reference of Prague Conservatoire events or performances of its students. A detailed analysis of articles excerpts which review perfomances of piano playing students is a very important part of this thesis. The historical context of female pianist perception is crucial in viewing these women, so thesis also follows female education during the 19th and the begginning of the 20th century in Czech enviroment.
Working and influence of Karel Lamač in the film industry of the First Czechoslovak Republic

The submitted diploma thesis is engaged in working of the film industry in Czechoslovakia in period among two world wars, which is seen through the important actor, scriptwriter, director and film entrepreneur Karel Lamač. The issue is researched especially from the perspective of formation and activity of the film companies which were professional associated with the person of Lamač. It is followed up the family background which he came from, and the milieu where he worked the First World War. It further focuses on Lamač's first steps in the field of cinematography after 1918 and on his working at the time of the First Czechoslovak Republic. It is also reflected Lamač's activity as an inventor and a journalistic author, as well as related financial profit from the subsequent sale of patents or licences to the created movies. The thesis tries to clear up the mechanisms that led to exceptional position of this artist in the Czechoslovak film industry, with regard to his professional outreach to the international sphere. The study also devotes to Lamač's most significant projects and co-workers in the field of cinematography in order to refer the extent to which he contributed to the popularity of contemporary film-stars. The Image of Czechoslovakia in Simon Mawer's The Glass Room

The thesis provides an analysis of the First Czechoslovak Republic in Simon Mawer's novel The Glass Room. The first part of the thesis concentrates on Mawer's life, the beginnings of his writing career, his interest in the Czech Republic and the Villa Tugendhat which inspired him in writing the novel and also on the work's receptions. The second part focuses on history of the First Czechoslovak Republic and on an analysis of this era in Mawer's novel. It deals with Czechoslovak political, social and economic situation, Czechoslovak cultural life and art, minorities issue and growing radicalism of 1930's in The Glass Room and compares and contrasts it with the real Czechoslovakia.
Language of Tabloids in the First Czechoslovak Republic

The aim of this work is to describe the language of several important tabloids in the First Czechoslovak Republic. Firstly, sensationalist journalism is defined by different criteria and is distinguished from serious journalism. The development of sensationalist journalism in Czech lands is outlined and the press in the First Czechoslovak Republic is characterized. Then, selected tabloids are characterized and evaluated according to the defined criteria of tabloids. Language in journalistic texts is put into broader context of journalistic style and is considered on the basis of the influences that affect the choice of the specific language means. One chapter is devoted to formal and language aspects of headlines of the tabloids. The headlines are described on lexical level, morphological level and syntactic level. The language of the tabloids itself is analyzed on the same levels, on the lexical, morphological and syntactic level. The tabloid press in the First Czechoslovak Republic is compared to contemporary tabloid press and some tendencies of the development of the tabloid press are outlined.
Coalitions and the System of Government in the First Czechoslovak Republic in the period 1918-1938

This thesis analyzes the First Czechoslovak Republic (1918-1938) in terms of coalition behavior. It describes all aspects related to this phenomenon using the analytic and descriptive method. The work starts with the introduction to the coalition theory, including the typology of coalition governments and other theoretical aspects related to the coalition formation. Defining coalition factors in the First Republic are analyzed together with the description of the historical context, while stressing the national issues that largely affected creation of governments. The relation between the legislative and the executive power, the electoral system and the party system with the list of relevant parties are presented as other key factors related directly or indirectly to the coalition behavior. Political parties had decisive influence, that's why the group of their leaders called "The Five" was able to fade the importance of the parliament and the government during a certain period. On the other hand, there was also a great popularity and authority of T. G. Masaryk, the first Czechoslovak president. Czech Advertisement between the World Wars: Case Study of Magazine Pestrý Týden in 1929

The bachelor thesis inspects the potential impact of the Big Depression on the Czechoslovak society in 1929 - the year of escalating economic conjuncture. To find it out, the advertising outputs are applied, namely a print advertising in the then social week magazine called "Pestrý týden" (The Motley/ Various Week in translation). The first part provides a theoretical background - it puts the topic into the historical, political, economic, social and cultural context in order to prepare a reader for the second part of the thesis. There are described the then means of advertising including a detailed characteristics of the First Republic print advertising. Except for that it emphasizes a new role of women in society and the advertisers' attention to these new consumers and buyers. The second part is practical and dedicated to quantitative content analysis and determination of an amount of particular goods and services in particular months. It is explained here, why some types of goods and services disappeared or appeared during the year and whether it was due to the crisis. Within the analysis the biggest investors and their target groups are defined as well.
The position of the Czechoslovak National Democratic Party in the political system of the first Czechoslovak Republic 1918-1934

The motivation of this bachelor theses is to map formation of Czechoslovak national democratic party and especialy to explore its evolution and the most important moments in First Republic, during defined time period. Partial objectives are as well the attempt to clarify status of National democratic party on political sceen of young Czechoslovakia, explore its relationship to the group Hrad and last but not least, to fascism. It's one-case study which is terminated by a short passage dedicated to party's envolvement to National Unity. Talking about National democratic party, it was impossible not to mention the most significant phenomenons and the strongest political agents of that era. This theses talks about them partialy as well, but rather in relation to discussed party than as a separate sub-topic. Smaller part of this theses is decicated to the most significant figures in the history of Natinal democratic party.
Slovak Political Parties in the First Czechoslovak Republic : Analysis of the Program Goals

The bachelor thesis deals with political parties, which operated in the Slovak during the first Czechoslovak Republic. The aim is to analyze the political programs of the parties, namely the programs of Republikánská strana zemědělského a malorolnického lidu, Československá sociálně-demokratická strana dělnická, Komunistická strana Československá, Hlinkova slovenská ľudová strana and Slovenská národná strana. I'm going to analyze how particular requirements, which relate to Slovakia, modified over time, disappeared and appeared in connection with the historical context. I am going to apply the discourse analysis as a research method. I am going to use formal political programs, historical documents as secondary sources and other publications dedicated to this historical period. The main research question will primarily concerned with issues of institutional organizations, competences, government structures, Czechoslovakism or autonomous requirements. I will search for all terms related to these topics in political programs. I will be interested in issues relating to the Slovak question. I will focus on the differences between Slovak and countrywide's political parties. The data will be evaluated and compared to each other in the conclusion.
Police Identification of Persons in Czechoslovakia between 1918 and 1938

This thesis is focused on police techniques of identification of persons used in Czechoslovakia between 1918 and 1938. The goal of this thesis was to show, how the police identification of persons should look like, in other words which techniques were used by criminologists, how they described them, which accomplishments and negatives they saw in them, who had to be identified and for which purpose. To answer all these questions I deal with political and administrative context of Czechoslovakia, police structure in Czechoslovakia between 1918 and 1938 and development of criminology, "bertillonage" and documents of identification (especially passports) in the first part of the text, where I mainly use secondary literature. Then I focus on analysis of three main techniques of identification used between 1918 and 1938, namely dactyloscopy, graphology and photography. In this part of the thesis, I use criminology manuals, published in the twenties and thirties. Finally, I work with the fourth technique of identification of persons, namely the description of persons, where I mainly use forms, which are in the criminology manuals.
