"I I erm I thought": Selected performance phenomena of Czech advanced speakers of English in comparison with the native speaker norm

The present thesis studies two types of performance phenomena, namely filled pauses and repeats. Both naturally occur in spoken discourse and do not hinder communication, their main function is to decrease the effects of online planning pressure. Since a speaker has to plan and produce language at the same time, non-native speakers are expected to experience greater difficulties when speaking a foreign language. The main aim of the present paper is to analyze English native speakers and Czech advanced speakers of English in terms of how their usage of these two phenomena differ. Attention is paid to overall frequencies as well as to their distribution, alternatively variation, and further performance phenomena in their proximity. The analysis comprises 3 non-native and 3 native speakers which were selected from the multilingual learner corpus LINDSEI and the monolingual corpus LOCNEC respectively.
Negative intensification in spoken British English

The BA thesis examines means of intensification of negation in British spoken English. Since intensification is generally associated with adverbials, more precisely with adverbs of degree, another aim of the study is to prove there are other than lexical means of intensification. For it is focused on the spoken language, which is natural, unplanned, improvised, it includes constructions that are regarded as ungrammatical in Standard English, but occur widely in the material used, namely the demographically sampled sub-corpus of the British National Corpus. Drawing on Dušková et al. (1988) and Biber et al. (1999) the thesis defines negation and intensification, and their mutual interaction and relation. Based on the findings of Palacios- Martínez (1996), the thesis aims at suggesting a suitable classification of the means of negative intensification provided by the corpus-based study. keywords: intensification, intensifier, negation, speech, colloquial language
Stylization of Spoken Language in Literature as a Translation Problem (French - Czech)

The present thesis examines the stylization of spoken language in literature from the translation point of view, namely in translation from French into Czech. As a prerequisite for dealing with the use of spoken language in translation, the use of spoken language in contemporary Czech literature is examined. Ten works of contemporary Czech literature are analysed via corpus linguistics methods, using the corpora of written language of the Czech National Corpus, with the view of describing the principal phonological, morphological, lexical and syntactic procedures used in Czech literary texts to evoke spoken language. In the second part of the thesis, six works of French literature containing features of spoken language are analysed, together with their translations into Czech. The paper also summarises the main features of spoken Czech and spoken French.
Building a Specialised Corpus of Banatian Czech with a Linguistic Analysis of Selected Features

The purpose of this thesis was to build a specialised corpus of Banatian Czech. The theoretical section describes the historical and language situation in the Banat area focusing on its development since the 1990s to the present day. This is followed by a presentation and description of specialised corpora focusing on a corpus of spoken Czech. Building a specialised corpus named BANAT is documented in detail (method of collection, processing and transcription of records, building of corpora and publishing). The analysis of possessive pronouns, negative pronouns and adverbs and enclitics confirms a statistically significant difference between Banatian Czech and the present state of Czech language (in all observed phenomena except enclitics). Tagging a spoken learner corpus

The aim of the thesis is to propose a tagging system for a learner corpus of spoken English which would, apart from tagging errors, focus also on the features specific for spoken language. Theoretical part, therefore, introduces basic concepts including learner language, the development of learner corpora in the last 20 years and both classical and computer-aided error analysis. Features typical of spoken language are described in the theoretical part as well since these are the focus of the research part of the thesis. The Louvain tagging system used for error-tagging of a leaner corpus of written language is used as the basis for the tagging system proposed in this thesis. Based on the analysis of 20 transcriptions taken from the Czech part of spoken learner corpus LINDSEI, modifications of the categories taken from the Louvain error-tagging system are proposed and new categories necessary for a better description of spoken language are introduced. The tagging system proposed in this thesis should make further analysis of the tagged corpus easier.
Developement of language skills of CODA

Miroslava Kotvová ABSTRACT: Bachelor thesis with the title the Development of the language skills of CODA is focused on the description of the development and acquisition of language hearing children of deaf parents, both spoken language and sign. The aim is to describe the development of language competence CODA studied to the basis of the available literature and interviews with CODA individuals. The theoretical part presents the field of the education of the deaf, culture and the Deaf community, sign language, but also a description of the acquisition of sign and spoken language. The practical part consists of the case studies of CODA which were based on the interviews with the individuals or even with them and their parents. The work highlights the problem of bilingual individuals growing up in a home environment with the sign language with the influence of the spoken language of the major society, but also the difficulty and importance of the election code of communication for deaf parents. The use of 'dan' and 'als' in comparisons: after the positive and comparative in the written and spoken language.

In this bachelor thesis the problematics of usage of two conjunctions "dan" and "als" will be investigated. In de first chapter the grammar rules regarding the use of the above-stated conjuctions in comparative construction will be defined. Subsequently, in the second chapter the research survey on the usage of comparative conjunctions by the native speakers will be introduced. The final results of the survey will be presented and put in the context with the theoretical side of the problematics. This thesis has as general objective to explore and define the differences between the use of "dan" and "als" according to the grammar rules of Dutch and in actual usage by native speakers. Syntactic analysis of Czech speakers in the Romanian Banat

The purpose of this thesis is an analysis of syntactic perturbations in the oral production of Czech speakers of the Bigr village at the Banat region, Romania. In the theoretical part, this thesis describes the historical and linguistic context of the Banat's Czech villages, with special emphasis on Bigr. In the analytical part then, the thesis set out to test hypotheses based on previous research, using the BANAT language corpus created for this study. In cases where it deems possible, the results are compared to the ORAL language corpus of spoken Czech. The analysis verified the existence of certain phenomena of the Bigerian Czech (e.g. prepositional instrumental of instrument, omission of svůj pronoun), the frequency of which partly corresponds to the language situation in oral production in the Czech Republic (e.g. forward position of pronominal subject, reflexive se, si and auxiliary verb být). The presence of some other phenomena could not be verified.
Some Notes on Breaking German Word-Formation Rules in the Language of Advertising

In this thesis has been considered that the language of advertising should be viewed as an autonomous functional style due to its unique formulations. Existing literature which is concerned with the language of German advertising or advertising in general provides to this subject ambiguous information. My goal was to compare interpretations of different authors and on the strength of my own collection of examples to assess if the language of advertising is an autonomous functional style. This work focuses on breaking German word-formation rules especially on elements of spoken language, occasionalismus and comparison of adjectives. It was considered the function of the language of advertising as well which hangs nearly together with the choice of expressions. The function turned out to be the decisive argument by setting of the functional style.
