Level of Understanding of Basics of Genetics and Molecular Biology by Students of Secondary Education
Machová, Markéta ; Ehler, Edvard (advisor) ; Zrzavá, Magda (referee) ; Králík, Miroslav (referee)
Genetics has been part of secondary education for decades. However, research on the outcomes of science education has long shown that pupils have various types of misconceptions and are not able to deeply understand the basic principles of heredity and genetics. This results in their inability to navigate in daily-life problems related to this topic and make informed decisions in their life. Deeper diagnostics of these problems as well as identification of their origin is still missing both abroad and in the Czech Republic, which unable to design effective steps leading to improvement of educational outcomes. Several analyses were conducted to describe the current state of genetics education at lower and upper secondary level in the Czech Republic from the perspective of the curriculum, textbooks, students understanding of the topic, conduction of the lessons and its impact on the students. Questionnaire was used as a main research tool. The questionnaire for pupils combined knowledge test and attitude items, while the questionnaire for teachers was used to reveal their approach and attitudes towards genetics lessons and teaching conditions of their school. Content analysis was used to analyse relevant documents affecting education (curricula and textbooks). The results pointed to problems at...
Botanical Field Trip to Doubrava River Valley for Lower Secondary Education
Hutař, Kamil ; Pavlasová, Lenka (advisor) ; Andreska, Jan (referee)
Nature trail "The valley of river Doubrava" connecting the village Bílek and the city Chotěboř in Železné hory, offers many possibilities on how to effectively include and use its surroundings in botanical and environmental education, which is the main goal of this diploma thesis. Theoretical part covers the characteristics of natural conditions of the nature trail territory as well as its significance and function. This part also describes, how this excursion fits in the Framework Education Programme for Elementary Education. Didactical part broadly introduces methodical plan of the excursion. This includes the verification and evaluation of the excursion. The aim of the excursion is to deepen and revise botanical knowledge and natural relations of individual locations of the nature trail with a connection to environmental education and nature preservation. The final chapter of the thesis offers teachers practical ideas on how to use the plants variety of the Doubrava Valley in botanical and environmental education. The thesis also includes my own photo documentation throughout the whole excursion. These pictures not only draw near the work when fulfilling tasks and activities to students, but also demonstrate the diversity and uniqueness of a region, where the excursion takes place.
The impact of inquiry-based science education in chemistry and biology
Sloupová, Hana
The main target of the thesis is to find the impact of using inquiry-based science education (IBSE) on pupils' inner motivation and the level of knowledge gained for ISCED 2. To reach that, two consecutive research surveys have been held. In the first part the reaction of pupils to including an IBSE task into a regular lesson has been observed. The impact on their inner motivation has been studied. The correlation between various factors (e.g. type of school, sex) and their changes in inner motivation on observed scales has been evaluated. In the second part, the existence of statistically significant difference between experimental and control group relating the motivation of pupils to do ordinary laboratory tasks has been questioned. That was studied also after implementation of IBSE. The level of knowledge of all the pupils was examined in a similar way. Implementation of IBSE itself was evaluated by an observation of pupils while performing the implemented task as well as by standardized questionnaire Intrinsic Motivation Inventory (IMI) (McAuley et al., 1989; Ryan, 1982). Acquired data have been processed by specialised software IBM SPSS Statistics 25 (IBM Corp., 2017), choosing suitable statistical methods. The results have shown that implementing IBSE tasks in chemistry education decreases...
Options of Approach to Teaching of Morphology of Leaf at Lower Secondary School
Němečková, Linda ; Pavlasová, Lenka (referee) ; Skýbová, Jana (referee)
The thesis deals with the options of approach to teaching leaf morphology at lower secondary schools from both theoretical and emprical point of view. The empirical part is then verified on-site within the teaching process. The theoretical part is dedicated to the topic of leaf and particular aspects of the teaching process. The empirical part at first attempts to conduct a survey of the methods and organization forms of teaching applied at particular lower secondary schools within the teaching of leaf morfology. Afterwards, it analyses selected textbooks used for teaching biology. Next part describes suggested methods and organization forms of teaching applied less frequently during the education. The second goal of the thesis is to put in practice the methods and organization forms of teaching within an educational experiment. Afterwards, a didactic test is used at representative schools to verify the efficiency. At the end of the thesis, the results of the following are presented: the observation of teaching leaf morphology, the analysis of the biology textbooks content, and the didactic test. The results of the didactic test demonstrate the extent to which the skills and knowledge of the students are effected by the methods and organization forms of teaching applied within the educational...

Project Teaching in Science Education at School in Most Region
Krajníková, Dagmar ; Pavlasová, Lenka (advisor) ; Skýbová, Jana (referee)
This diploma thesis deals with the inclusion of project days in Natural history lessons at elementary schools in Most and nearby villages. The diploma thesis is divided into three parts. The theoretical part is devoted to origin and history of project-based learning in the world and in czech schools, theoretical concepts that are directly related to project-based learning, and also the incusion of project-based learning into present educational proces, advantages and disadvantages of project-based learning. The research part of the thesis and the main research problem focuses on using the project-based learning at primary school. The research part is the result of a questionnaire survey that I realized at selected elementary schools. In the process of researching was used a questionnaire method, which i sone of the most common tools for data collection. Teachers from these schools took care of completing the statistical data. The questionnaire was created and distributed electronically. In the practical part I present the project day "Tree Day" which I realized at lower secondery school Obránců míru in Most. KEY WORDS Project-based learning, project day, science teaching
Assessment in Biology Education in Trebic, Znojmo and surroundings
KLIMEŠOVÁ, Martina
Bachelor thesis describes the assessment methods used in teaching natural science at selected schools on Trebic and Znojmo district. The survey among students showed that teachers mostly use the written assessment, during which mainly focus on knowledge of the concepts and definitions. Nearly three quarters of students have experience with formative assessment. Replies teachers from classes, in which the survey was conducted, confirmed these findings from questionnaires for students.
Lower-Secondary Students' Attitudes towards Selected Topics of Human Biology
POSPÍCHAL, Bedřich
The bachelor thesis deals with lower-secondary pupils' attitudes to selected topics from Human biology. The literature review focused on curricular documents and the concept of teaching Human biology and its goals at selected schools. There is the simplified analysis of selected human biology textbooks and researches with the similar objective as this thesis. The attitudes of basic school pupils were investigated with questionnaire survey. This survey included 220 pupils from selected schools in Vysočina Region. The questionnaire was also given to the teachers at these schools to find out additional information and compare their answers with pupils' answers. The results show that more than half of respondents consider human biology as interesting topic and they have positive attitude to it. Among interesting organ systems pupils mentioned reproductive and muscular systems. On the other hand, the nervous and vascular systems are considered as the least interesting topics in this field. They had also negative attitude to Latin terminology. Pupils stressed out the importance of the first aid knowledge as a part of Human biology lessons. They also mentioned the teacher as the crucial factor influencing their attitude to particular topics.
