THE TRANSFORMATIONSOF THE RELATION BETWEEN AND READER AND BOOK IN THE YEARS 1990-2009

Bachelor thesis "The Transformations of the Relation between a Reader and a Book in the Years 1990-2009" aims to describe and clarify the development of book reading in the Czech Republic from post-revolution years to the present days with an extension to the 80s. Mapping of this subject-matter is based on an analysis of a range of readers' surveys which addressed the relation between a reader and a book, reading habits, behavior on the book market, libraries, preferred literary genres and authors etc. This thesis covers all these aspects. It also deals with international researches of reading literacy among teenagers (PISA). In the beginning it offers several readers typologies in search of the most suitable definition of a reader. It treats the significance of the book for human society and explains the changes on the book market since the fall of the communist regime. Then it characterizes sociological research and its requirements as well as its possible limits and deficiencies. The most extensive chapter describes individual readers' surveys, from information about how they were carried out to their most important findings which are then put into context. Activities before reading, during reading and after reading when working with text in teaching literature in grades 6-9

This thesis deals with the before-, during- and after- reading activities when working with text in teaching literature in grades 6-9. The first part describes results from testing the critical literacy of Czech students in the PISA 2009 international comparison, as well as levels of critical literacy and its place in the Framework Education Programme for Elementary Education. The reasons for using these activities and examples of them are also discussed. In the practical part, I carried out research using questionnaires to find out if and how often teachers use these types of activities and I have provided examples of those used. Next I wanted to find out which types of readers the teachers use and how these readers contribute to a student's reading literacy development.
Acquisition of reading using alternative methods and problems of minority groups

This master`s thesis deals with a topic of literacy and mainly with teaching reading. The research phase of this thesis defines literacy, minority groups, teaching reading methods and acquisition of reading skills. The practical part is based on a long term research under the authority of the Czech Science Foundation between 2009 and 2011. The thesis describes only one part of the research namely in the Hanspaulka primary school in Prague. The research deals with readiness of children for learning reading in the beginning of schooling when the phonics approach is being applied. The level of reading ability of children at the end of the first class was compared. The level of the relation between the good or the risk readiness for reading and the reading level at the end of the first class of primary school was being examined.
Development of literacy using the RWCT methods

The thesis comprehends the topic of reading literacy development using methods of Reading and Writing for Critical Thinking (RWCT) at the first stage of primary education. The background of RWCT program is described in the first part of the thesis, along with defining the field of reading literacy. Several methods of the program are more thorougly analyzed, including their positive impact on development of the individual aspects of reading literacy. The research part examines the possibility of various constituents of reading literacy to be developed using RWCT methods, and the circumstances that have to be met in order to achieve it. The main focus of analysis lies in the benefits of reading workshop technique, and its application in overall development of reading literary and reading itself.
Procedures for the development of literacy in terms of the small school

The subject of this thesis is the issue of the development of literacy skills of pupils in primary education through conditions offered by small schools. The aim is to analyze the possibility of developing reading literacy among pupils in the first grade of primary school in terms of the small schools; setup and subsequent use of good conditions for the development of reading. The thesis is divided into theoretical and practical part. In the theoretical part are defined the theoretical background related to the above mentioned issues. Custom research was carried out through action research, completed a questionnaire that the children completed at the beginning and end of the period. The main objective was to determine the initial state of literacy in groups of pupils and through changes in education, the creation of good conditions and use innovative methods to monitor the process of the individual activities of students, capturing deficiencies and seek alternative approaches and solutions. Word problems in mathematics in the contex of Reading Literacy and Matthematical Literacy.

The aim of my work is to prove continuity of solving word problems in math within the context of reading and mathematical literacy. Ten word problems will be created with different mathematical content, with longer task for challenging reading literacy. For all problems will be stated the correct solution. In the practical part, the problems will be assigned to solve to selected pupils at selected schools. The results of their solution will then be analysed and published.
Research of reading abilities of today´s young people at age from 12 to 15

This thesis deals with the research focused on the reading of today´s youthful from Budweis and Prague. The results of this research will be compared and contrast. The research is focused on the motivation of reading (schools and public libraries, recommendation of teachers, support by parents) and on the survey focused on the fact how much is reading occurred in today´s youthful in their free time. The thesis points out the representation of Czech and worldwide literature in reading of today´s youth and explores the genres.
The Implementation of Reading Workshop at the Primary School

This thesis deals with the inclusion of the reading workshop methods in the primary schools and its application to the lessons of the Czech language and literature. The main aim of the theoretical part is to define key concepts connected with the topic. It describes the definitions of the reading workshop, the reading literacy and the description of "The formal notice no. 56", which has been focused on the support of the development of reading in the Czech schools. In this part the particular educational methods, which are focused on the development of reading, and the Czech and international researches are characterized. The practical part of the thesis, using the qualitative surveys, appraises the preparation and the realization of the project "The formal notice no. 56" at the particular primary school. There were realized the interviews with the educators and the head master. The assets and negative features of the reading workshop were followed by those dialogues. According to the direct observation of the methods during the lessons of the Czech language and literature, there were recorded the reactions of pupils to the reading and working with a text. In the practical part there are also the characteristics of the materials which were created under the project in the school. The purpose of these researches is to find out how the teachers as well as the schoolchildren react to the method and if it brought to the classes any new elements and if it could be still the part of education in the future.
Didactic interpretation of Čapek´s works in the literary education for second grade of elementary school

The aim of this diploma thesis entitled "Didactic interpretation of Čapek's works in literary education for the 2nd stage of primary education" is to chart how the works of Karel Čapek are represented in each series of reading books for the 2nd stage of primary education. It will also further evaluate the choice of works represented and introduce the fundamental concepts in Čapek's work. The thesis is divided into many parts. The first of these is concerned with the current state of literary education, the question of literacy, and other individuals who have an effect on the process of literary education. Furthermore, recorded methods that are used in literacy lessons are outlined. The methods that focus principally on the development of literacy are described in more detail. On the basis of classic literature a didactic interpretation is described, its situation, function, determinants and policies. The thesis concisely describes Čapek's works. A key part of the thesis is made up of the analysis of reading books from many different publishers Alter, Fraus, Nová škola, Prodos and SPN. The thesis focuses not only on how many snippets of the work of Karel Čapek are found in any given reading book, but also takes into account the representation of the genre and the ideas presented alongside the texts. After evaluation, the actual concept that the entirety of Čapek's work attempts to cover is introduced.
