Construction of the Single European Railway Area: Reforms of railway sector in the Czech Republic 2004-2014.
Volf, Jaromír ; Nigrin, Tomáš (advisor) ; Šlosarčík, Ivo (referee)
This thesis Construction of the Single European Railway Area: Reforms of railway sector in the Czech Republic 2004-2014 deals with the europeanisation of the Czech railway policies through the lens of four subjects - government, regional governments, Czech railway and private railway companies. The work puts the issue of the European railway reform into the perspective of the concept of network industries liberalisation. The Czech Republic joined the European Union in 2004 and therefore had no chance in influencing its foundation. The thesis attempts to investigate the ways in which the EU affected the Czech railway environment and, simultaneously, if some kind strengthening of actors supporting liberalisation took place. The work concluded that although these actors have been strengthened, the railway market in passenger transport hasn't been created. As the work demonstrates, this was caused mainly by insufficient institutional and adjustment ability of the state that hasn't been able to successfully finish any public tenders. In the regions, the situation is similar - in 2009, a ten- year memorandum on operating of regional transport by Czech railways has been passed. Besides, each region has a different transport policy and the government will probably try to handle.

Roubík, Michal ; Jakubec, Ivan (advisor) ; Sejk, Michal (referee)
In my diploma thesis "The Development of Urban Build-up Area and Urban Infrastructure in Benešov in the Years 1918 - 1939", I explore one chapter in the development of a small agricultural town during the era of the First Czechoslovak Republic. This thesis is a contribution to the history of Czech towns during the interwar period and its topic corresponds to the research project of the Institute of Economic and Social History at the Faculty of Arts, Charles University in Prague, within the frame of which I worked on this thesis. The thesis was written mainly based on research of the resources in the State District Archives in Benešov (a branch office of the State Regional Archives in Prague) and of a wide range of relevant specialized literature. The introduction consists of a chapter offering a complex summary of the most important moments and changes in the development of Benešov during the examined period. Apart from the history of Benešov, it also shows the role of the town in the region and the relation of its development to other municipalities in the country. The focal point of the thesis lays in the extensive yet lucid chapters examining architectural development of the town (the essential moments, context, but also particular interesting buildings) and the development of its infrastructure...

The effect of the entry of private open-access operators on the performance of railways
Turek, Tomáš ; Vejchodská, Eliška (advisor) ; Louda, Jiří (referee)
This thesis aspires to contribute to the discussion about economic justification of current process of railway liberalisation in European Union and specifically in Czech Republic. We focus on the method of vertical separation and open access, where governments keep control over the infrastructure and its development and individual train operators compete on-track. The first section contains a summary of progress of the reform and its historical context across Europe and a review of various methods of its economic evaluation. Based on that, the next section presents a partial equilibrium econometric model applied on the route between Prague and Ostrava. Simulations are run to explore different market settings, infrastructure investment possibilities and potential tolls imposed on individual road transportation. We conclude that liberalisation followed by entry of competing railway undertakings, as well as a rational attitude of the government towards long-term infrastructure investments, are crucial for future competitiveness of railways.
Estimation of Suburban Railway Demand in the Czech Republic
Mlčkovský, Petr ; Zouhar, Jan (advisor) ; Chytilová, Helena (referee)
This thesis analyzes railway demand and its determinants in the context of regional railway passenger transport in the Czech Republic and Prague suburban railway system. Special attention is devoted to examining the impact of new trains on the demand for the selected route of Jizerskohorské Railway. In particular models, I utilize as estimation procedure and difference-in-differences estimator. Panel data analysis found, in line with other published studies, short-run inelastic nature of demand. In order to increase revenue to railway operator, one must distinguish between a group of dependent and discretionary riders whose elasticity is different. Effect of buying new trains can be substantial, especially on less frequented routes with a greater proportion of private car holders.
