The thesis deals with the issue of motivation of learning Russian as a second foreign language at Czech lower secondary schools. The main aim of the thesis is to determine the level of motivation of teaching aids for Russian language for lower secondary school pupils in the Czech Republic. The thesis consists of theoretical and practical parts. In the theoretical part the concepts of motivation, motivation to learn and teaching aids for foreign language and their role in motivation are explained. In the practical part, three textbooks for Russian language teaching are analysed: Классные друзья, Времена and Поехали. The analysis is based on the criteria developed by the author of the thesis. The conducted research shows that the above- mentioned textbooks are motivating for Russian language teaching, but they have some weaknesses in structure, motivational aspect, clarity of tasks and content. On the basis of the analysis, recommendations for motivating students in using these teaching aids are proposed. The work has practical significance for foreign language teachers, textbook authors and publishers. KEYWORDS foreign language, lower secondary school, textbook, analysis, recommendation

Pupils' perception of maps
Benešová, Eva ; Krajňáková, Lenka (advisor) ; Mísařová, Darina (referee)
The diploma thesis focuses on pupils' map perception and its main objective is to characterize how sixth-grade pupils perceive visuals that resemble maps in their appearance or characteristics, or are defined as maps according to commonly used definitions. The theoretical part of the thesis explains in detail the concept of maps in foreign and Czech literature, but also in geography textbooks for the sixth grade of elementary schools. An important part of the theoretical part is also the description of mental map schemata, which were presented in detail by the American geographer A. MacEachren in his book How Maps Work. A total of 22 respondents from three elementary schools participated in the research. The selected pupils took part in approximately fifteen-minute interviews, in which they first described what they think a map is, and then decided whether the presented visuals were maps or not, providing their reasoning for their decisions. A total of 15 visuals were presented, which were selected based on the previous analysis of the literature. The results of the research showed that the used geography textbook and the teaching style of the teacher influence how pupils perceive maps. Several basic elements according to which pupils recognize maps were derived from their answers. Among the most...

Michelčíková, Viktorie ; Chejnová, Pavla (advisor) ; Hájková, Eva (referee)
The topic of this thesis is communicative competence and pragmatic aspects in Czech language textbooks at elementary schools. The thesis's theoretical part focuses on defining concepts such as pragmatics, gender, politeness, cooperative communication, dialogue, argumentation, and manipulation. In the practical part, the thesis analyses five third-year Czech language textbooks and examines to what extent pragmatic aspects are included in the textbooks. The research has shown that although pragmatic aspects are included in the textbooks, their level is not sufficient in most cases, and it is necessary to supplement these topics with additional supporting materials. The outcome of this work could be useful for Czech language teachers at the first level of primary schools who intend to focus on developing their pupils' communicative competence and improving their pragmatic communication skills.
