Problematics of Spelling Soft and Hard Consonants in Teaching

The diploma thesis Problematics of Spelling Soft and Hard Consents in Teaching deals with the given topic within the curriculum of the second year of primary school. The main aim of the thesis was to teach pupils the orthographic rules related to the topic and their application. Theoretical part describes the position of consonants in Czech language, the position of given topic in teaching and problematics of terminology. It also describes the psychomotor development of child. Further, in theoretical part is an analysis of interpretation and practice in Czech language textbooks for the second year of primary school. The subject of the practical part was to create and apply an alternative teaching method and to teach pupils to use soft and hard i/y after spellingly soft and hard consonants. The survey was conducted with pupils of the second year of primary school in the form of application of an alternative teaching method created on the basis of a synthesis of knowledge from the theoretical part. It was attended by 21 pupils for 22 teaching hours. Main testing was performed at the beginning and at the end, continuous testing took place in sections of the subject matter. Contemporary Czech orthography workbooks and guides and their didactic use

This diploma thesis deals with the possibilities of use of contemporary workbooks and guides of Czech orthography, their quality and their position amongst other material didactic aids. It briefly introduces the concept of spelling from a linguistic viewpoint, defines the spelling curriculum in a didactic concept, and introduces the basic types of spelling exercises, as well as their advantages and risks. Empirical research was carried out through five selected publications. These were subjected to a detailed examination and the selected passages were subjected to a response from primary school respondents. This thesis analyses specific selected books, but moreover, it also aims to evaluate the possibilities and limits of commercial publications designed for spelling practice. The choice of the type of exercises included, the assignment's clarity, the content attractiveness of included texts, and the book's graphic processing and more are important factors in determining the quality of the given types of books.
Language mistakes in formal e-mail communication in French and their impact on the achievement of the communication goal

v anglickém jazyce The aim of this thesis is to analyze language problems in the uncorrected written speech of French native speakers. Examined snippets come from electronic communication between clients and the service provider. The thesis is divided into two parts. The first, theoretical part is focused on defining the term "error", classifying language problems by levels and pragmatic aspects of e-mail communication. The second part of the thesis is divided into two chapters. The first chapter is devoted to the analysis of language problems in the context of individual texts and the assessment of their importance for achieving the communication goal. This analysis is carried out on the basis of the criteria from the theoretical part. The second chapter will be devoted to a questionnaire on this issue between native speakers and their reactions. The grammar exercises at the 2nd level of a primary school education

The theme of bachelor's work is teaching spelling in the second grade of elementary school. The work will be divided into theoretical and practical part. The aim is to establish the current state of spelling knowledge of pupils in elementary schools. The theoretical part will be devoted to selected manuals of spelling, history, development and division of the Czech spelling. The theoretical part will study spelling of pupils in the second grade of elementary schools. The chapter will be devoted to the subject matter in the various grades of the second degree, on the basis of the FEP (the framework educational programme) and textbooks that pupils use. The practical part will be based on the analysis of the spelling exercises, which will be developed by the pupils of the second grade of elementary schools. On the basis of the evaluation ofthe exercise will be described the most common spelling mistakes made by pupils.
Teaching Silent Letters to Czech Learners

This diploma thesis follows up on the bachelor thesis which dealt with the phenomenon of silent letters and which was created by the same author. This bachelor thesis has revealed that Czech learners tend to mispronounce every fifth word containing a silent letter which should be seen as alarming. The diploma thesis therefore tries to find some way how to change this situation. The theoretical part of this thesis focuses on the analysis of various techniques and materials which are concerned with silent letters. In the practical part this materials are adjusted to the needs of the Czech learners in order to create a battery of activities which would cover this area of pronunciation. In the next step these activities will be introduced in English classrooms. In the research we will monitor the progress of the respondents over a larger period of time and assess how effective the created activities are.
Effectiveness of teaching synthetic phonics to EFL students

The effectiveness of teaching synthetic phonics to EFL students Abstract This diploma thesis deals with the effectiveness of systematic and explicit Synthetic Phonics teaching methods in the EFL learning environment. The theoretical part of the text investigates the similarities and differences between teaching Synthetic and Analytic Phonics. Whether synthetic phonics is essential not only for native English speakers, but also for EFL students is examined. Furthermore, it introduces the changes and development in phonics teaching in a historical context. The practical section describes the test preparation and presents how the research methodology was applied. It also examines the data collected from testing four groups of Prague primary school children who have different experience of phonics. Last but not least, the empirical section presents the results of 60 students' readings and analyses their performances concluding with an assessment as to whether explicit Synthetic Phonics teaching instruction helps EFL students in pronouncing words or not. Awareness and Knowledge of Lexical and Spelling Differences Between British and American English Among Czech Students of English

This thesis is concerned with lexical and spelling differences between British and American English. The theoretical part provides an overview of the history and development of those differences, including a list of selected high frequency items. It also focuses on the role of American culture in the world and its impact on the English language. The practical part is based on a survey and attempts to discover whether Czech upper secondary students are aware of British and American English and the differences between them, with special attention to the media dominated by American English and their influence on students' language competence. Signature of Preschool Age Children

This bachelor thesis is focused on a research of preschool aged children's signature. It consists of a theoretical and an empirical part. In the theoretical part there is an analysis of preschool age and its characteristics from the emotional, graphomotor and sensual evolution including socialization process. Further it deals with various researches studying the topic of evolution of children's signature and preferring individual letters of their names. The basis of this work is the empirical part, whose goal is to find out the children's skills while writing the name, its special status in children's writing and reading skills, knowledge of letters and uniqueness of letters contained in their names from the beginning of their school attendance when they are not mostly able to read and write. The research is based on methods of questioning using the worksheets with tasks, semi-structured interview with chosen children and follow-up analysis of signatures. In the interviews I have been finding out answers in four categories of questions. First category of questions is directly related to own signature, whether a child manages to read his or her signature again and decode individual letters. Personal pronouns já and on - their codification and current status

The topic of this bachelor's essay are word forms of Czech personal pronouns já and on whose codification changed since 1930s and cognate word forms of relative pronoun jenž. The work analyses the articles which suggested or defended these changes and concentrates on how they argued for them. Then it sums up descriptions of these forms in current grammar books and dictionaries. Finally, it explores several phenomena connected with these forms in synchronic corpora. The effectiveness of teaching synthetic phonics to EFL students Abstract The diploma considers the effectiveness of systematic and explicit Synthetic Phonics teaching methods in the EFL learning environment. The theoretical section examines foreign language methodology - the field of reading acquisition in young learners, especially English language pronunciation. It studies how systematic explicit Phonics approach can help in learning how to read and pronounce words correctly. It explores the similarities and differences between teaching Synthetic and Analytic Phonics, and compares them. Furthermore it discusses whether synthetic phonics is useful not only for native English speakers, but also for EFL students. The practical part focuses on testing two groups of children who have different experiences of phonics. The data were collected in Prague and the Hradec Králové region. There were 62 students tested out of whom 33 were in a control group and 29 were taught using a systematic Phonics approach. A specially designed test consisting of two different activities was applied. It tested word reading, non-word pronouncing and sight word recognition.
