Helebrant, Šárka ; Mikuláš, Martin (advisor) ; Dvořák, Bohuslav (referee)
The thesis aims to present the use of postcolonial literature in pursuance of developing critical literacy in English lessons of upper secondary schools, together with increasing the awareness of the postcolonial world, South Africa specifically. The theoretical part of the thesis concentrates on contemporary knowledge in the field of methodology of teaching literature, reading strategies, and critical literacy, including its development and assessment. Furthermore, the theoretical section establishes the environment for the practical part, which consists of qualitative research in a Czech upper secondary school and employs pretesting, intrinsic research, teacher's and students' assessment, and final achievement test. The research implies that critical literacy is viewed differently with respect to different experts and various fields. Furthermore, the research indicates that the assessment of critical literacy is built mainly on assumptions of the specialists interested in this field and no standardised or unified tests are available. Lastly, the research shows that postcolonial literature seems to be an optimal source for enhancing students' critical literacy since it incorporates similar themes as critical literacy. The thesis has explained that the use of postcolonial literature and relevant...
Reading Strategies in Preschool Education
Koželuhová, Eva
The aim of the thesis was to clarify how nursery teachers develop children's comprehension of the text read aloud and how they evaluate the possibility of using reading strategies to support children's comprehension during reading. In the theoretical part, I focused on defining the concept of reading literacy and pre-literacy, approaching the concept of the development of reading pre-literacy in the Czech Republic and clarifying the concept of comprehension of the text. Subsequently, I dealt with the issue of reading strategies and introduced those that are suitable for use in preschool age. In the empirical part, I used the qualitative approach of a multi-case study, which involved eight kindergarten teachers. Through in-depth interviews, repeated observation of the teachers' work with the text and subsequent analysis of video recordings of this work, answers to research questions were sought. It has been shown that teachers intend to develop children's comprehension, but only on a literal level, their work with texts is intuitive, without setting specific goals and monitoring the degree of their achievement. It turned out that reading strategies require a willingness of the teacher to work with them regularly and purposefully and to prepare for reading, which does not correspond to the prevailing...

Konvalinová, Lucie ; Laufková, Veronika (advisor) ; Starý, Karel (referee)
This Master's thesis deals with the reading literacy development of primary school students, focusing on their use of reading strategies, and is divided into two parts. The theoretical part defines reading literacy and other related terms, as well as specifies the relationship between functional and reading literacy. It describes the development of reading literacy, its dimensions and explains the factors that influence it. It presents the differences between reading strategies and skills, describing the relationship between them. This section introduces methods of developing reading literacy using the RWCT programme. The work also monitors the representation of reading literacy in the Framework Educational Programme for Basic Education (FEP BE) and, based on the results of international surveys PIRLS and PISA, describes the situation of Czech students in terms of reading. The main goal of the practical part of the work was to find out what reading strategies are applied by selected fourth-grade primary school students. The investigation was conducted through online in-depth interviews with students over the literary text. The survey results show differences between students in their ability to apply selected reading strategies. The research further confirms that the quantity and type of children's...
The theme of Christmas mediated in kindergarten through the work with a book
Hýblerová, Karolína ; Laufková, Veronika (advisor) ; Havlová, Jana (referee)
This bachelor's thesis deals with the topic of Christmas mediated to children in kindergarten through work with a book. The theoretical part is focused on explaining the terminology, namely the concepts of reading, reading literacy, and reading pre-literacy. The following chapters reflect the areas that need to be developed in children, so that they can read well, with understanding and with joy in the future; the chapters reveal the influence that fairy tales have on preschool children and how emotional intelligence can be developed with reading pre-literacy. As kindergartens must follow the Framework Education Programme for Preschool Education, one of the chapters is also devoted to the analysis of this document in connection with the topic of this thesis. Since the development of the reading pre-literacy is built through reading strategies and RWCT methods, they are discussed in the theoretical part. Also, the lessons presented in the practical part used the reading strategies and the RWCT methods. The theoretical part concludes with a chapter about annotations of selected quality children's books on the Christmas topic. The aim of the practical part was to find out how teachers in kindergarten mediate the theme of Christmas to children, with what books and how they work. The questionnaire...

Richterová, Kristýna ; Laufková, Veronika (advisor) ; Rybárová, Eva (referee)
This diploma thesis deals with the topic of work with illustration in kindergarten as support to understanding a text that is read aloud. The aim is to design and verify methods of working with illustrations in kindergarten that support the understanding of a text that is read aloud to preschool children. In the theoretical part of the thesis, I deal with illustration, visual literacy, method of working with a book, understanding a text (read aloud) and the characteristics of preschool children with regard to the topic of the thesis. Subsequently, I apply this knowledge in the practical implementations. In the practical part, I propose and verify methods of working with illustration in kindergarten which should support the understanding of a text that is read aloud to preschool children. The thesis is focused on qualitative research in which I compared differences between research and experimental group sample. First, I tested the level of skill of all twenty children when working with illustrations and understanding of a text read aloud (both research and experimental group samples). Then I put together seven preparations where I focused on the development of reading strategies and I supported the children in the understanding of the text read aloud on the basis of selected expected outcomes...
The use of classical and contemporary Children's literature to the reading literacy development of learners at 1st degree of elementary
KLEINOVÁ, Andrea
The thesis deals with the use of classical and contemporary literature for the development of reading literacy at primary schools. We focused mainly on the research of popular literature of third to fifth grade primary pupils. We also investigated what extra-curricular reading materials teachers choose to develop their pupils' reading literacy and how they work with them. In the theoretical part, we present a brief insight into the issue of reading literacy, current research results, methods, strategies and factors influencing reading literacy. In the research part, we present the results of a questionnaire survey of pupils' parents, where the main attention was paid to the preferences of titles, authors and genres of their children. In the practical part, we followed up on the results of these surveys and designed worksheets with activities aimed at promoting reading comprehension and developing reading strategies. We focused mainly on their motivational and entertaining character. Worksheets with activities were verified in selected classes of primary schools and supplemented by rich reflection from practice.
