Mocák, Filip ; Krausz Hladká, Malvína (advisor) ; Svitková, Katarína (referee)
The purpose of this work is to examine two political and economic blocs of South America; MERCOSUR and Pacific Alliance. Concretely, it focuses on the way of founding above mentioned organizations as well as it stresses economic power of both coalitions and their potential for the future. Region is analysed by realism perspective. While MERCOSUR was understood as a product of bandwagoning executed by Brazil's neighbours, the research about Pacific Alliance was based on balance of power behaviour. I used two research strategies: (1) a descriptive method applying bandwagoning and balance of power concepts on process of creation of both respective organization and (2) comparative analysis to compare coalitions and bring insight on current success of Pacific Alliance and potential outlook in the future. Since the relevant continent is considered as zone of peace, the realistic view on power was enriched by economic aspect. Hence, a driving force in regional affairs is economic, rather than military power. In case of Pacific Alliance, The focus was on two founding members, Chile and Colombia, since both are considered as secondary powers on the South American continent. The main sources to conduct this research were published economic reports and academic articles, analyses and journals. Even though...

Navrátil, Jan ; Peterková, Jana (advisor) ; Trávníčková, Zuzana (referee)
Latin America, at the moment, is not the main focus point of international politics. However, its situation makes it a potentially economically and politically interesting region, because it lies in the proximity of USA, has ties to East Asia and is historically and culturally linked to Europe. In order to make their mark in the world system, Latin American nations integrate into various blocs. The most prominent blocs right now are longstanding MERCOSUR and new dynamic Alianza del Pacífico. The main aim of this thesis is to evaluate strengths and weaknesses and identify potential threats and opportunities of/for MERCOSUR and AP in the context of Latin-American integration.

The main goal of the thesis is to discover how did the power predominance of the United States contribute to the emergence of Latin American integration groups. The tested hypothesis is based on the concept of soft balancing, and assumes that the primary cause of emergence of Latin American integration groups was the fear of the power predominance of the United States. The causes of emergence are always examined from the perspective of the historical context and the founding treaty. If needed, other relevant documents are examined as well. Moreover, the thesis deals with the direct predecessors of the selected groups, too. Pursuant to 4 basic criteria, the selected integration groups were divided into 3 categories according to their relevance to represent the region of Latin America as a whole. Apart from an overview of development of the Latin American integration process, the thesis also provides an answer...
