Vegrichtová, Denisa ; Cebe, Jan (advisor) ; Köpplová, Barbara (referee)
The topic of this diploma thesis is the way how the media described the Spanish flu in selected historical press in the years 1918-1920. The main method used is a quantitative content analysis, which enables the examination of a larger volume of data. Quantitative content analysis is performed on articles from the Czech-language newspaper Lidové noviny and from the American newspaper The Sun. In terms of timeframe, the research is limited to the years 1918-1920, i.e. the period when the Spanish flu epidemic took place. Attention is paid to the way in which the Spanish flu was reported in the selected newspapers, for example the frequency of publishing news about the disease, the main topics of the articles, how often articles about the disease made it to the front pages, or whether the disease is presented as fatal. Subsequently, part of the work is devoted to the qualitative analysis of articles from professional medical journals. Two articles are from 1918, another two articles are from 2018 and 2019. In this case, using qualitative analysis, the different views of doctors on the Spanish flu are analyzed, from 1918 - when the epidemic broke out, and a hundred years later. For example, the reported symptoms of the disease or the method of treatment were examined. At the end of the work, after...
Media image of the death of Mikhail Gorbachev and Elizabeth II. in the Czech press
Beranová, Monika ; Štoll, Martin (advisor) ; Růžička, Daniel (referee)
This master's thesis focuses on analyzing the media image of two significant political and cultural figures, Mikhail Gorbachev and Queen Elizabeth II. Both figures passed away shortly after each other in 2023. The text describes in detail the lives and political careers of both figures, their impact on the world, and the current perception of their characters. Mikhail Gorbachev is often referred to as the greatest politician of the 20th century. He served as the General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union from 1985 to 1991 and was also its sole President from 1990 to 1991. He advocated for economic and political changes that led to the democratization of the Soviet Union. In 1990, he even received the Nobel Peace Prize. The figure of Mikhail Gorbachev is still perceived very differently by Russians, the global public, politicians, and the academic community. Gorbachev himself was never fully identified as the architect of the collapse of the Soviet Union. Queen Elizabeth II reigned as the Queen of fifteen independent states known as the Commonwealth realm from 1952 to 2022. During her reign, there were several significant milestones that influenced the perception of the Queen and the entire British royal family. As an example, her ascension to the throne and coronation in 1953 was...

Havel was created in the selected press during the selected period, and whether quality press experienced tabloidization. The thesis is divided into a theoretical and practical part. The theoretical part describes the characteristics of quality and tabloid press and the process of tabloidization. It also introduces theoretical concepts that this thesis is based on, such as agenda-setting, gatekeeping, and social construction of reality. To provide a more comprehensive picture of Vaclav Havel's life, there is one chapter dedicated to him in the theoretical part. The practical part introduces the analysis method, followed by its procedure and results. Quantitative content analysis showed that more information about V. Havel was reported in the selected serious daily newspaper Mladá fronta DNES than in the selected tabloid daily newspaper Blesk. The explanation for this phenomenon may be that quality press...

Starková, Johana ; Křeček, Jan (advisor) ; Nečas, Vlastimil (referee)
This thesis, titled Oligarchization without an oligarch: analysis of TV Nova news broadcasting after a change of owner, focuses on a currently highly debated issue of oligarchic media ownership. The oligarchic media ownership model is a trend in current media ownership. Research on media ownership answers key questions about who owns these means of communication and how power is potentially exercised through their ownership. In 2020, businessman and billionaire Petr Kellner ranks among other media magnates through his investment group PPF. With the acquisition of the media company CME, he takes control of all activities of the most watched commercial television in the Czech Republic, TV Nova. Through this investment, Kellner's PPF achieves enormous influence. Based on quantitative content analysis, this thesis aims to determine whether the news coverage of this private television station tends to favour topics that support the business or other economic interests of the PPF Group. The research sample of the thesis consists mainly of news reports broadcast on Nova TV. The key value for the research is the analysed amount of time devoted to the PPF Group in comparison to their competitors.
