A Discursive Analysis of the Changes in the Perception of Ecological Activism and Eco-terrorism
Haratíková, Alexandra ; Vávra, Martin (advisor) ; Šťovíčková Jantulová, Magdaléna (referee)
The diploma thesis analyzes the way in which ecological activism and eco-terrorism were described in 1997 and 2019 in the Lidové noviny and Právo dailies and tries to find the most significant similarities and differences between the two media discourses. The analysis is carried out with the use of Norman Fairclough's critical discursive analysis. The work is divided into a theoretical and an empirical part, where the former pays attention to the definition and beginnings of environmental activism and eco-terrorism and the most significant manifestations of ecological activism in the studied years - the completion of the Temelín nuclear power plant for 1997, and Greta Thunberg for 2019. The research part analyzes the discourse of ecological activism and eco-terrorism in the studied years, and compares them. The aim of the work is to capture the essence of these two discourses, their actors, main topics and arguments. The conclusion of the empirical part consists of comparisons between the two discourses and a discussion of their differences and similarities. Keywords Norman Fairclough, critical discourse analysis, ecological activism, eco-terrorism, media discourse, Temelin, Greta Thunberg

Using Norman Fairclough's discourse analysis, I examine the construction of climate change in the texts and styles of interpretations and arguments regarding scientific knowledge. Subsequently, I focus on actors and relations between them, also norms and values appearing in the discourse. Populism as a discursive strategy: an analysis of the communication of selected populist actors in the Czech political arena
Křovák, Jan ; Charvát, Jakub (advisor) ; Just, Petr (referee)
This paper analyses the concept of populism as a discursive strategy. Therefore, it uses the view of populist discourse as discussed by Ernesto Laclau and other authors in their works. The author analyses the communication practices of four selected Czech political actors on social networks (Facebook and Twitter) in the period before the elections to the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of the Czech Republic in October 2021. For the analysis, the author chose representatives who are commonly labelled as populists, i.e. former Prime Minister Andrej Babiš, far-right populists, i.e. Tomio Okamura, and then two politicians representing mainstream parties - Markéta Pekarová Adamová from TOP 09 and Vít Rakušan from STAN. In the theoretical part, the author describes in depth the phenomenon of populism on the basis of expert literature, and in a comprehensive way points out the relationship between populism, social networks, media and political communication. In the practical part, the author conducted a so-called critical discursive analysis of posts of the politicians on the above-mentioned social media and then compared their dominant communication practices. The author then places the data and results of the research in context of the populist narrative described in the theoretical part of the thesis.
Approach of the Czech Health Politics to Strategy Health 2020
Machová, Kamila ; Háva, Petr (advisor) ; Tušková, Eva (referee)
The aim of the thesis is the assessment of developments in the approach towards the "European" strategy Health 2020 by Czech political players while using methods of critical discourse analysis and the assessment of the development of the Health 2020 agenda during the period 2010-2012 in the context of previous activities of the World Health Organization. The approach of the Czech health care political players to the strategy had been assessed on the basis of governmental programmatic statements since 1998, the National Reform Program of Czech Republic 2011 and interviews with participants in the Czech health policy and Czech health care. The approach of Czech health policy towards the Health 2020 strategy had been evaluated as extremely problematic. The course of creation and discussion of Health 2020 in 2012 had become a critical barrier for the Czech Ministry of Health. As a result, no wider awareness of this strategy exists in Czech health policy, neither does exist a Czech translation of this strategy. Lastly, the goals of Czech health policy do not reflect in a single point of the goals of the Health 2020 strategy.
Work motivation theory in socialist discourse of the '50s
Gruntová Kolingerová, Hana ; Štemberk, Jan (advisor) ; Vávra, Martin (referee)
The thesis focuses on the construction of the work motivation theory in the socialist management discourse in the 1950s' Czechoslovakia. For that purpose, two texts representing two periods (1951 and 1957) were selected and subjected to critical discourse analysis. The analysis focused on characterising the place of production, the producers and the audience as well as on characterising the construed theory and the method of its construction. Furthermore, a change in the discourse was described; the fact that certain discourse schemes were applied prior to the onset of the communist power was pointed out; and certain differences in terms of construction of work motivation theories in the liberal West were illustrated. In connection with Foucault's concepts of subjectification and disciplination, it was shown that the socialist discourse can be understood as a method of construction of the specific subjectivity of the workforce, used in a strategy of distribution of human working potential of all citizens of the State that corresponded with the application of extensive economy. Malík, Tomáš ; Vinopal, Jiří (advisor) ; Duffková, Jana (referee)
The theme of this thesis is a conceptualization of media discourse of social inadaptability on example of news reporting on the internet portal iDNES.cz. I am analysing various ideological resources and social conditions which may influence the existence and prevailing of this discourse type. My goal was also to answer the question which social groups and individuals are associated with this label and what characteristics are attributed to them by journalists. The survey examined media texts from 2006 to 2009 within theoretical and methodological framework of the critical discourse analysis by Norman Fairclough.
Sexual Identity as Cinematic Subversion: the Discourse of New Queer Cinema
Kajánková, Lucia ; Hanáková, Petra (advisor) ; Bláhová, Jindřiška (referee)
The thesis proposes the New Queer Cinema chapter of film history as a paradigm of queer film's subversive practices. The theoretically and historically focused first part establishes the term queer, expounds its possible applications to film in the realm of queer film studies and in the third chapter critically introduces the 'new wave' of queer film New Queer Cinema. The analytical part assigns queer and its possible functions as its basis for inquiry. It consists of two parts: the first performs the formal-content analysis of the pivotal film Swoon (1992); the final chapter builds on its conclusions and examines the corpus of New Queer Cinema films along four analytical cuts in order to describe how they produce the queer discourse. The final output of the thesis is an open model of prospective approaches to queer film.
The Concept of the "New Woman" in the First Czechoslovak Republic (1918-1938)
Votrubová, Yvona ; Gelnarová, Jitka (advisor) ; Kobová, Ĺubica (referee)
The diploma thesis is focused on the concept of the "New Woman" in the first Czechoslovak Republic (1918-1938). The "New Woman" is understood as a discursive construct acquiring various meanings. In this work, I reveal wide range of these meanings and identify images of the "New Woman", which indicate what was hidden under this concept. The aim of the thesis is to find an answer to the question of what contents the concept was acquiring at a given time. To achieve this goal, I use critical discourse analysis to analyze materials (books, periodicals) from the era of the first Czechoslovak Republic. I also place the topic of the "New Woman" in the necessary context, which focuses on the legal and social status of women in the first Czechoslovak Republic and the origin of the concept and its elaboration by western authors. Key words: the "new woman", history, the first Czechoslovak republic, discourse, critical discourse analysis
The Battle for the Meaning of sexual Harassment: Analysis of Media Reactions to the Conference Legal Aspects of the "Me Too" Campaign
Pechačová, Alžběta ; Kobová, Ĺubica (advisor) ; Kolářová, Kateřina (referee)
The aim of the thesis is to find out how the frame of sexual harassment is created in the context of a discourse conflict brought about by the conference "Legal Aspects of ‛MeToo' Campaign", which took place in Prague in March 2018. My analytical sample consisted of four op- ed pieces of the protagonists of the conference and five op-ed pieces of the critics of the conference. I chose critical discourse analysis as my analytical tool to find out how each side of the discursive conflict constructs the discourse of sexual harassment. In my research I identified these discourses in the texts of the protagonists of the conference: Sexual harassment is just a sexual behaviour, Colonization of sexual harassment by legal discourse and Construction of the Subjects. In the articles of the critics of the conference I identified following discourses: Sexual harassment is an abuse of power, Construction of the expertise on sexual harassment. The protagonists of the conference co-created hermeneutical and testimonial injustice towards victims, while the conference critics co-created testimonial justice but neverthless contributed to furthering hermeneutical injustice towards victims.
The politicization of the language issue in Ukraine: the discursive construction of the language, nationalism, and identity in Ukrainian media.
Hu, Qianrui ; Šír, Jan (advisor) ; Wilson, Andrew (referee) ; Kolenovská, Daniela (referee)
Despite already thirty years after gaining independence, Ukraine is still having difficulties forming an integral and united national identity. The language issue in Ukraine is a vivid example of the problem Ukraine is confronting. Numerous efforts have been made with the aim to strengthen the role of the Ukrainian language, but the presence of the Russian language in Ukraine is still strong. Furthermore, the battle between these two languages often provokes huge public debates, and the debates do not revolve around the language use itself, but usually associate it with the wider debate of the Ukrainian common memory. Although much research has been devoted to analysing the narratives of relevant language laws, the discourses of Ukrainian politicians, or public opinions of the language issue and their links with people's political orientation, this thesis will focus on the discourses of media, an equally important site which represents and reproduces everyday nationalism. By adopting the methodology of critical discourse analysis, this work aims to uncover what are the common themes behind the everyday debate on the language issue in Ukrainian media and what are the typical mechanisms and strategies in the language use of media discourses to facilitate propagating their language ideologies. After a...
