Representation of (former) African colonies in 19th and 20th century domestic travel writing
Martinek, Adam ; Novotný, Josef (advisor) ; Šarše, Vojtěch (referee)
This diploma thesis analyzes 19th and 20th Czech language travel literature from (former) African colonies. The thesis is rooted in postcolonial theory - namely Osterhammel's synthesis of colonialism as a structure and an ideology, as well as Said's theory of orientalism. A key theoretical aspect of this work is Sarah Lemmen's updated notion of noncolonial orientalism, which arose out of her empirical work on Czech/Czechoslovak travel writing. Lemmen's concept addresses the specific standing of the Czech traveler vis-à-vis the colony, as they were not a representative of any world power, yet still exhibited orientalist views on colonies and the colonized. This work also pays special attention to the influence of socialist ideology on travel literature published between the years 1948 and 1989. The research questions which this work aims to answer are as follows: a) how is colonialism represented in Czech travel literature?, b) how is decolonization represented?, c) how do these travelogues portray Africans and their relationship to Europeans? These questions aim at understanding the authors' relationship with colonialism and orientalism as both ideology and practice which they encountered in Africa. The thesis consists of an analysis of nineteen of potential fifty-eight travelogues written by...

Drštičková, Hana ; Jamrichová, Kristína (referee) ; Janů, Valentýna (advisor)
The diploma thesis formally consists of a mosaic of outputs across the media. It contains a set of videos, a set of embroidered pieces of clothing and a set of hand-drawn, subjective maps, all supplemented and accompanied by drawings, watercolors, texts, objects and audio. Thematically, the work has two layers. First, it deals with the reflection of (my) selected hobbies that relate to specific ideas about nature and landscape. These hobbies are divided into three thematic areas named Emo Maps, The Cowboy Spectrum, and Bio Tops. In the second layer, the work is a critical reflection on the use of hobby strategies in art work, as one of the last available ways to create in times of permanent crises.
Kurdish Identity and The Revolutionary Left in Turkey From Eastern Question to Kurdish Question (1960-1990)
Hatapçı, Ali ; Ira, Jaroslav (advisor) ; Czoch, Gábor (referee)
This study is based on the relationship between the Kurds and the Left in Turkey between 1960s and 1990 in Turkey. The question of identity is discussed in terms of the continuities and ruptures in the discourse(s) of the Left in Turkey on the 'eastern question' and 'Kurdish (national) question' in this period. The main question of the research is how the Kurdish identity was constructed in the discourses of Yön, TKSP (Türkiye Kürdistanı Sosyalist Partisi - Turkish Kurdistan Socialist Party), and the PKK (Partiya Karkerên Kurdistanê - Kurdistan Workers' Party). Three sample publications/organizations representative of the leftist discourse in the period were selected to show the Left's treatment of the Kurdish question by using periodical publications, memoirs, clandestine organizational documents and through discourse analysis.
The impact of colonial war on Portugal in the sixties
Loužecký, Martin ; Menclová, Barbora (advisor) ; Mejstřík, Martin (referee)
The bachelor thesis entails the changes that Portugal has gone through from the beginning of the sixties in regard to the war that had broken out within the Portuguese colonies. Moreover, the work compares the new decade with the period from the end of the fifties. Main focus is given to the situation of the regime called "New State", once the war started and the socioeconomic changes the sixties have experienced. Colonial War provided a chance for the authoritarian prime minister Salazar to unify the attitude of the society and strengthen propaganda by changing the current colonial politics. Salazarism was obsolete and non-progressive and therefore unwanted before the war, but at a later time again gained a numerous base of supporters. It was triggered by a new wave of propaganda, together with Salazar's reforms. Portugal also noticed a change in the sixties within the field of international politics. While the associated countries including traditional allies of Portugal such as The Great Britain or United States opposed the colonial politics in the fifties, the relations got better again in the sixties. On the other hand, international organizations including the United Nations which Portugal was a member of literally condemned imperialism. The goal of this thesis is to explain the status quo in...
Comparison of the Decolonisation Process in Indonesia and Malaysia
Šebek, Ivo ; Klusáková, Luďa (advisor) ; Janáč, Jiří (referee) ; Křížová, Markéta (referee)
The author of the submitted work compares the process of decolonization in Southeast Asia on the examples of Indonesia and the Federation of Malaya. Although both countries have much in common, culturally, historically, or geographically for example; the process of gaining independence from the colonial powers differed in many aspects. Text analyses probable reasons for these differences by comparative study of economic, social and political histories of both territories in the 19th and especially in the first half of the 20th century. Taking into account the extensive subject matter the analysis focuses only on selected areas that seem to be essential to the distinct development of decolonization in researched countries based on the existing literature. That involves particularly the approach of colonial countries (Great Britain and Netherlands), the course of World War II, solving the ethnical issue and the role of local political elites. This work also covers brief summary of economic and political development in the period preceding the declaration of independence. Key words: Decolonization Southeast Asia Indonesia Malayan federation colonialism

Navajo Ritual Healing
Galovič, Roman ; Chlup, Radek (advisor) ; Kozák, Jan (referee)
In this paper I deal with two traditions of ritual healing in Navajoland, namely with the traditional Navajo ritual healing and the peyote healing of Native American Church. I introduce them in three dimensions when I consecutively describe a cosmological framework, a social organization and a specific example of a ritual. At the core of my analysis is the grid & group method that was developed by Mary Douglas, when I look for the correlations between cosmological notions and social structures, and the ways they are established by the ritual. This way I point out how the colonial oppression weakened community ties and created ground for the growth of Native American Church in Navajoland, because NAC is able to offer existential answers for life in such a desolate space. However this does not mean that the Traditional Navajo healing was wiped out by colonialism, and both traditions continue to exist side by side and are quite often combined by particular patients. I offer a way to interpret this medical plurality when I fuse Mary Douglas' method with certain traditional Navajo notions and psychological analyses by Friedrich Nietzsche. In this view, every person would be permanently situated in socially and phenomenologically heterogenic space, and particular healing traditions would heal different social...
