Charles Baudelaire - The Flowers of Evil

The subject of this bachelor's thesis is the personality and work of Charles Baudelaire. We are interested in how Baudelaire's life and also the historical period in which he lived influenced his output. The aim of my work is to show why the Charles Baudelaire's collection of poems The folwers of evil was so exceptional in its time and why it was initially rejected by some critics as well as later positively received by others.The purpose of this bachelor's thesis is to show, how was the reaction on Baudelaire's work in Bohemia and how translations from the Czech authors differ. The thesis also discusses Baudelaire's relationship to women, especially to Jeanne Duval, and how is his cohabitation with this lifelong partner reflected in poems of the Flowers of Evil collection. We are also reflecting of Baudelaire's conception of beauty, and by that we demonstrate novelty and originality of his poetry. Charles Baudelaire's work brings new, unknown possibilities, which disrupt and change previous aesthetic norms and gives poetry a new dimension and inspiration for next generations. The change of approach to death, view on death in society through the eyes of gravediggers

West society development is really fast. Whole culture evolution signifies changes of life style and priorities. One of these changes is also different approach to death and perception of mortality. In this work I'll try to outline changes in society in connection with perception of death. First I'll mention historical context of these issues and also the different priorities of society, mainly the option to choose funeral in the culture context. Whole work should point on human approach to death and mortality in connection with society and culture. This is one of the reasons I choose three gravediggers to make an interview with. The interview had three main zones. In first zone is important general view on functioning of graveyards and gravediggers. Next part is view of gravediggers on death in our society. The emphasis is placed in their view on society and society's relation to death and mortality. Gravediggers have really specific profession so last part is dedicated to their personal view on these issues. Work should bring a new view on society's approach to these issues mainly through the eyes of gravediggers. And it should show the gradual development as well. This development stands behind current approach.

The Temptation of Saint Anthony. The Theme of Modern Art between Text and Image.

This thesis examines the Temptation of Saint Anthony in the last quarter of the 19th century in France and Belgium. By analysis of particular art works it shows the variability of iconography and complexity of the Temptation theme which reflects the contemporary relation to religion, history, science, exotism, eroticism and other areas, which man living in the era of greate changes was confronted with. The importance of "The Temptation of Saint Anthony" by Gustave Flaubert is emphasized as an inspirational source for fine arts and on the general level the relation of text and visual presentation is discussed. The final part of the thesis dealing with "fin de siècle" art references the metamorphosis of the Temptation of st. Anthony in literature and fine arts as well as historical, social and religious relations in the context of which the character of Saint Anthony gradually became a permanent part of French culture.

The Eternal Boyhood of Jiří Karásek ze Lvovic

The thesis attempts to describe the life and work of Jiří Karásek ze Lvovic through an analysis of his lifestyle, i.e. the way in which he organized, embellished and individualized his life. Karásek sought to shape his existence as an artwork, in accordance with the inspirational concepts of the contemporary and antecedent thinkers and artists (e.g. Oscar Wilde, Walter Pater and Maurice Maeterlinck). He accented its integrity and orientation towards beauty. In accord with his aesthetic vision (and his literary work) Karásek conditioned beauty with sadness and pain and attempted to emphasize melancholic beauty, unity in disunion. For that purpose he would accentuate particularly the disintegrative, critical elements, evoking the impression of unsuccessful, self-destructive endeavor to reach life's high ideal. This corresponded with his tragic concept of the artist immolating himself for his Art. I approach Karásek's lifestyle through the use of the terms youth and (eternal) boyhood, which Karásek himself employed as symbols of mournfully beautiful existence in his literary work. Bizarre food? Is good to think.

The following thesis discusses how bizarre food is conceptualized within the anthropology of food and how it connects to symbolic anthropology. Through the complex description of the individual experience during the process of eating bizarre foods, the perception of the experience and the various motivations behind it will be explained. From an anthropological point of view it will be examined whether bizarre foods are the carriers of cultural significance and how this is further demonstrated within the culture. Through analysis of some specific foods I will also try to reveal their symbolic meaning.

The Contrast of life and death in works of J. K. Šlejhar

The thesis focuses on J. K. Šlejhar's literary work from two points of view. The first part introduces Šlejhar's work in the contemporary literary context as a result of a synthesis of new literary styles. In the second part the thesis concentrates on a textual analysis and reconstruction of the author's "artistic world". The first part of the thesis gives insight into the contemporary discussions aimed at revising and redefining the function of art with respect to the new development in society and new human needs. The critical reception of realism and naturalism and the reflection of the then wide-spread adoption of new influences from foreign literatures are also dicussed. To draw a comparison, we quote both period and current studies dealing with J. K. Šlejhar's work. Thereby we want to demonstrate the changing requirements of literature and art and the changing perception of a literary work throughout time. The second part of the thesis comprises the textual analysis of Šlejhar's selected writings from the point of view of semiotic literary theory and the reconstruction of the author's "artistic world". Such approach enables us to draw comparisons to Russian literature of the 19th century, primarily with the works of N. V. Gogol and F. M. Dostoyevsky, and to discover a common basis for both...

Use of Symbolism in Selected Works of William Golding

This diploma thesis is concerned with the use of symbolism in three selected novels by William Golding, Pincher Martin, The Spire and The Double Tongue. The theoretical part presents a brief biography of the writer and outlines theoretical background of literary symbolism, focusing especially on Northrop Frye's Theory of Symbols and the psychoanalytic perspective. It is concluded by listing sources of inspiration behind the selected Golding's works, taking his own experiences as well as literary influences into account. The practical part begins with characterization of Golding's use of symbols in general, including his methods, recurring topics and symbolic patterns. Its main part focuses individually on the three chosen books, in the order of their publication. Each section analyses symbolism of setting of the story and the protagonists' names, symbolic imagery, and it seeks for Christian and psychoanalytic symbols. In addition, it presents possible interpretations of other significant symbols occurring in the particular novel. The use of symbolism is put in context with outer influences to show the variety of topics and specificity of the author's style.

Poetry on the Road

The present study seeks to describe the significance of the road, the walking, the escape in Arthur Rimbaud's poetry through the analysis of his poems and the synthesis of the works of his biographers. The study shows the mentioned themes both as motifs present in all the works of Arthur Rimbaud and as a real, radical desire that led his life. Starting with the first influences and impressions that formed Rimbaud's imagination, through his further flights and wanderings up to the definitive escape to Africa and the refusal of the poetry this work creates a compact line, discovers whether the visions and dreams of the poet were fulfilled and whether his poetry relates to his life journey. The study also focuses on the subject of the unity of life and art through the analysis of different approaches of literary scientists.

Concept of Childhood in Fyodor Sologub's prose

ТITLE The Concept of Childhood in Fyodor Sologub's prose ABSTRACT: This Master thesis deals with the topic of childhood in prose works of the Russian writer, novelist and teacher Fyodor Sologub. The research presents his biography, traces the development of his personality, as well as his perception of the world and interests. It focuses on the events, which determined the extent and significance of the chosen topic for Sologub. There are also revealed lesser known facts of his childhood that influenced his choice of the topics and its embodiment in his literary works. The writer's biography is complemented by the views of critics and contemporaries who studied his works and shaped public opinion. The main topics of the analysis are: dualistic vision of the world, children's death, faith in God, children's patriotism. The ideal world of children is presented in the novel The Created Legend. The thesis also reveals the popularity of the topic of childhood in other 19th and 20th century writers' oeuvre in comparative analysis with Sologub's work. It also depicts the importance of two literary movements - symbolism and decadence, their representative Sologub was. The questions raised by Sologub remain relevant to the present day.
