Kocsis, Andrea ; Ira, Jaroslav (advisor) ; Verdier, Nicolas (referee) ; Pótó, János (referee)
IN ENGLISH Iconography and Nationalism: The comparison of the First World War memorials in Budapest and Prague The purpose of the present thesis is to compare the national iconography appearing on Czech and Hungarian WW1 memorials. The political power symbolically occupied the public spaces by the WW1 memorials while expressing its national propaganda after the Great War. It was an attempt inducting sensitive questions since the dead heroes of the nation were dead sons of the families at the same time. For this reason the making of memorials is connected to individual and collective grief. This grief resulted in a glorious narrative in Czechoslovakia, while in Hungary th death of soldiers represented the death of the nation in the discourse on the political level. How can this process be expressed and how can it be researched? On the one hand, commemorations are situated in space, and space is an implicit content of WW1 memorials. As a consequence, it is important to analyse the spatial context of the monuments. On the other hand, the explicit content of the monuments is their visuality. In order to analyse and compare the iconographies, it is useful to transform the symbols into a countable form by applying the content analysis method. Furthermore, for interpreting the symbols, it is necessary to...

Masarčíková, Jana ; Jirák, Jan (advisor) ; Zezulková, Markéta (referee)
The diploma thesis deals with the media heroization / construction of dead celebrity icons. The introduction focuses on the explanation of the process of becoming an icon and its interpretation in certain fields and theoretical concepts, for example in the context of semiotics and sociology. A separate chapter is devoted to the role of media in the process. I attempt to reveal the media's influence on this process by studying the theory of media construction of reality and the ctreation of culture industry. The second chapter also explains the phenomenon of celebritization, which is crucial due to the applied example of dead celebrities. Based on the specific analysis I try to identify trends that are reflected in media representation of dead celebrities afterlife, and these further put in a wider context. The aim of the master thesis is to find out what trends are reflected in media representation of celebrities after their death, how the media work to maintain dead celebrities "alive", and what are the specifics of this "life". The content analysis was determined to show the character of media coverage. The semiotic analysis on the other hand to show what myths are constructed around the famous dead celebrities.

Spišáková, Veronika ; Šisler, Vít (advisor) ; Šlerka, Josef (referee)
The diploma thesis deals with the subject of video games heroes. The goal of this thesis is to analyze the image of a video game hero and the components of which this image consists. Another focus of this thesis is to compare the images of video game heroes of the RPG (role-playing game) genre with the FPS (first person shooter) genre and to find out which aspects the images have in common and which are different. Content analysis of the games is applied in this thesis, based on predefined criteria and field notes gathered during playing top 100 rated games (50 games of the RPG genre and 50 games of the FPS genre) by Metacritic for 30 minutes each. The selection of the research sample is limited by the main character of the games; analysed games are such in which the hero is determined by the game and the player can't adjust him in any way, for example by choosing the character's gender, their physical predispositions and their occupation. The analysis of the games proved that the main hero was mostly an adult Caucasian human male. This characteristic was registered in the FPS genre more frequently.
The Evolution of the Hero and the Villain
Čabartová, Kristýna ; Clark, Colin Steele (advisor) ; Markus, Radvan (referee)
Thesis Abstract - English The thesis aimed to identify changes in the character of the hero and the villain and to determine the socio-cultural factors which influence them (religion, feminism, globalization and capitalism), with specific focus on the trends which merge distinctive qualities of heroes and villains and reduce their differences to a point where the reader's sympathies shift from the hero to the villain or until they are indistinguishable from each other. The hypothesis was that moral relativism, whose popularity expanded during globalization, was the most significant factor in the current merging qualities of heroes and villains. Due to the great number of factors, the focus was mainly on the analysis of influences present in the twenty-first century, and only briefly outlined their historical evolution. The primary focus was on modern cross-over fantasy (mainly high fantasy) with stress on the main characters, analyzing the changes in their description, qualities and the way their behavior is portrayed, while attempting to explore the respective sociological reasons behind them. The first chapter provided definitions of the term fantasy and characterized the hero and the villain, reaching the conclusion that these terms are continually evolving and, in the era of modern fantasy, became too...

This thesis Gender in compulsory reading - Old Greek Myths and Legends: Gender analysis of the writing deals with literary representation of gender issues in mentioned writing, written by Eduard Petiška. The very analysis is based on analysing of gender topics and issues we are interested in and focused on. These topics are compared and showed using examples from particular myths and legend. The question whether these topics are influenced by patriarchal order in the society is the crucial for this thesis. Despite the variability of Petiška's writing, which is necessarily caused by variations of ancient and continuously construated stories; some patterns and systems are there to be found and explored by contemporary gender theories, mostly by feministic literature criticism. In this thesis the method of resisting reading according to Judith Fetterley is used. The deconstruction of the text and its hidden values which are based on male domination and the reconstruction of it in order to show the new perspective at the same moment are the main goals of resisting reading. The characters from the legends are used in context of archetypal criticism method. Considering the literature-critical perspective, the method of close reading is chosen.
