Impacts of Brexit referendum on European banks: evidence from Country-by-Country Reporting

1 Abstract In the negotiation period of Brexit in the years 2016-2019, banks in the UK had to plan their activity based on the expectation of whether they would have passporting rights in the future or not. The referendum's consequences may foreshadow what the actual Brexit will entail. This master thesis investigates the impact of the Brexit referendum in 2016 on the banking activity of the 45 largest European banks during the negotiation period. I use gravity analysis for inter-country transactions, and a brand-new "Synthetic Difference in Differences", together with Synthetic Control and standard Difference in Differences, for intra-country transactions. Although all of these methods were used in the literature in the context of the Brexit referendum, the Country-by-Country Reporting (CbCR) dataset that I use has not yet been used in such a context. I use turnover reported in CbCR by European banks as a proxy for banking activity in the years 2013-2019 and, thus, have four pre-treatment years (i.e., 2013-2016) and three post- treatment years (i.e., 2017-2019). Using the gravity model, I discovered empirical evidence that banks reported lower turnover since the Brexit referendum in their partner countries by between 14.5% and 44.6% relative to their domestic country. Comparison of Two British Referendums on European Union membership in 1975 and 2016

This bachelor thesis deals with comparison of two referendums held in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland in which British people decided about EEC/EU membership. These referendums were held in years 1975 and 2016. In 1975 people voted to stay in EEC, whereas in 2016 the exact opposite decision was made. The comparative method which is used in this thesis is applicated to analyse selected criteria. These are political background of the referendum, renegotiation of membership terms and the form and the results of the referendum itself. The comparative method is used to reach the goal of the thesis which is to reveal differences and similarities between the two referendums. Several differences explaining the opposite outcomes of the referendums were discovered as a result of the comparison.

Right of a member state to leave the EU in context of the Brexit Abstract One year has passed since the United Kingdom officially announced its intention to withdraw from the European Union membership. Brexit as this withdrawal is often called means the turning point not only for the view of the concept of the ever closer European integration, but it also presents feasibility of a new option for the EU Member States. It is astonishing that in spite of popular attention to this topic there is an absence of serious academic research dealing with the right of a Member State to withdraw in all its wide aspects. Therefore, this thesis aims at the goal of describing the problem of the withdrawal in the most complex way and not only in the light of the recent Brexit. For understanding the present situation, it seems to be necessary, at least in the limited way, to introduce the right of withdrawal as the external aspect of the sovereignty ultima ratio which even in the historical period before the explicit incorporation in the Lisbon Treaty had to exist. In a retrospective view, it is also crucial to mention cases which were in a strict sense not examples of a withdrawal of Member States, but that proved the practical accommodation of national instruments and procedures to termination of EU law application. The evolution of Labour Party's position on Brexit

This bachelor thesis deals with the attitude of the British opposition Labour Party towards Brexit. The thesis explores the development of this attitude since the 2016 United Kingdom European Union membership referendum until the 2019 United Kingdom general election and focuses on the reasons for Labour Party's ambivalent stance towards this issue. The main subject of this thesis is the influence of the division of the Labour Party's electorate and the British one-round plurality electoral system on this attitude. The first part of the thesis deals with electoral systems and their influence on party systems and political parties. The second part examines the historical development of Labour Party's stance towards European integration. The goal of this part is to show that the Labour Party had always had an ambivalent and changing view on European integration and that its disunity on this issue is not a new phenomenon. The third part examines the development of Labour Party's position after the 2016 referendum and shows, how the view of the party changed, how the party tried to deal with this issue and what conflicts the party members experienced. Global Elite and its Clubs: The Case of Bilderberg Group

of the dissertation The following five interdisciplinary essays contribute to International Relations, sociology and media studies, mainly on empirical, but also on theoretical level. Their overarching message is to reject paranoid, but also benign narrative of global elite clubs as exemplified on the case of the controversial transatlantic forum Bilderberg Group. On theoretical level, the dissertation highlights continuing relevance of sometimes overlooked neo-Marxism. It offers further support for the thesis that some kind of transnational capitalist class (TCC) has developed, which is disputed even by several neo- Marxists, let alone other scholars. Specifically, the findings on Bilderberg Group corroborate the existence of Euro-Atlantic TCC. Within this social network, the European fraction seems to be the most consolidated one. On empirical level, the dissertation is the first publication that thoroughly exploited data from the recently launched official Bilderberg Group's website. From another under- researched source, the dissertation compiled new datasets about all post-Cold War Bilderberg conferences. Economic and social impacts of migration : The case of the United Kingdom

From 2015, a huge influx of refugees came from the Middle East, the Balkans, Central Asia and Africa to Europe. It is triggered by various persecutions, armed wars, economic impossibility. The majority of those arrived were refugees, those who had fled their country due to imminent threat or persecution and were even trying to reach the European continent at the risk of their lives. The others are economic immigrants who have migrated to the European Union in the hope of a better life - to work, study or reunite. The UK has been a major destination for both migrants and refugees for many decades. The dissertation draws attention to the complex effects of migration, with a particular focus on the host country, and highlights, especially in the UK, the need for migrants in an aging society in Europe, even if the public thinks otherwise. With the Brexit, the UK has exited the European Union, cut back on previous benefits for EU migrants and is opening up to former Commonwealth members as sending countries.
