Application of the Reading Comprehension Method in the Teaching of Selected Species of Amphibians at Lower Secondary Education
Korečková, Valentýna ; Andreska, Jan (advisor) ; Hanel, Lubomír (referee)
In my diploma thesis I apply the reading comprehension method in the biology and I focus on selected species of amphibians. Understanding the text is a prerequisite for learning from the text, and it is an important part of understanding the world. This is the reason why I use a multidisciplinary approach and I included reading comprehension methods in the teaching of amphibians in elementary school. In my diploma thesis, I made a research which I examine whether students with learning disabilities will be able to understand the text, or whether they will be more successful in a simpler text supplemented with pictures and graphs. Furthermore, I deal with whether teaching with the application of the reading comprehension method will increase students' interest in the discussed topic and whether these students will be more successful in verifying their knowledge than students who were taught using the frontal method. I have chosen methods to achieve the goals which are: a frontal teaching method, teaching with the application of developing reading comprehension, a test in the form of a questionnaire and a semi-structured interview with pupils. It is a mixed research, where I combine qualitative and quantitative research procedures. This research is implemented at a selected elementary school. The...
Teaching the Topic of Photosynthesis using Aspects of Inquiry-based Learning
Rapantová, Lenka ; Vojíř, Karel (advisor) ; Nejedlý, Adam (referee)
This bachelor thesis deals with the teaching of photosynthesis in primary school science classes. The aim of the thesis was to validate a teaching program with elements of inquiry- oriented teaching, to find out its effectiveness on the level of knowledge acquired by the pupils of the seventh year at the second grade of the primary school. To investigate the educational effect, an initial pre-test was designed to ascertain the pupils' prior knowledge. Furthermore, the knowledge acquired after the laboratory tasks were carried out was analyzed and verified by an analogous post-test. The premise was that the laboratory activity would motivate the pupils' interest in science and provide a better understanding of photosynthesis, especially its inputs, waste substances and products. Another aim of this thesis was to find out how pupils perceive the attractiveness, value and usefulness of the tutorial after completing it and how they evaluate their efforts in this type of learning. A standardized IMI (Intrinsic Motivation Inventory) questionnaire survey was used to determine the above. The paper describes in detail the different laboratory tasks that were part of the curriculum applied in science classes, as well as the procedures necessary for their implementation and the students' reactions to the...

Burian, Oskar ; Ehler, Edvard (advisor) ; Vančata, Václav (referee)
Objectives: To find basic information and the concept of interdisciplinary teaching and its possible inclusion in lessons. Describe selected activation methods in teaching in general and in teaching human biology. To analyze selected frequently used textbooks for pupils of the 2nd grade of elementary school, containing the topic of the muscular system as a suitable topic for the interdisciplinary connection of biology and physical education in the context of the frequency of impulses for the implementation of physical activities and containing the interdisciplinary connection of the above mentioned subjects. Design and implement the teaching of the muscular system with activation methods and cross-curricular elements and find out what the students' attitude towards it is. Using a knowledge test, compare pupils who have completed activation and interdisciplinary teaching with pupils who have undergone frontal theoretical teaching of the same topic. Methods: Two methods were used for the research investigation. An online questionnaire regarding the attitude of students, created in Google forms, allowing students to comment on the lessons with closed and open questions, with a guarantee of anonymity. The second method of research is a knowledge test, created for the purpose of the thesis, which was...
Out of School Biology Instruction in Podpořany Region
Kantová, Ludmila ; Skýbová, Jana (advisor) ; Svobodová, Silvie (referee)
This diploma thesis deals with biological excursion of teaching in Podbořany region. This region is able to provide variety of places that are attractive in terms of science education. Excursion routes here can be suitable for pupils of primary and secondary schools and focused on different directions of biology. Particularly, it concerns botany, geology, zoology and ecology. The thesis has a theoretical part, the aim of which is to characterize the natural science excursion as a form of teaching and to describe the basic characteristics of natural science excursions. The practical part deals with the list of regional localities in terms of organizing natural science excursions, processing of proposals for excursions to selected locations with outputs in the form of worksheets and verification of these proposals for excursions in practice. Except of the selected locations characteristics the ideas also contain materials for teachers, which is useful when planning excursions for teachers from nearby schools. Part of the thesis is also a double questionnaire survey. The first focuses on the attitude of teachers in the region to excursion teaching. The aim of the second questionnaire, which was distributed to pupils, was to find out whether the excursion motivated them to a greater interest in natural...
Students' Perception of Selected Teaching Methods within the Educational Program on the Topic of Owls
Hašpl, Filip ; Andreska, Jan (advisor) ; Hanel, Lubomír (referee)
This study focuses on the perception of differences between frontal and inquiry-based learning (IBL) from the perspective of elementary school students. The theoretical part of the thesis provides information about owls and the theoretical foundation of teaching. It describes the Czech curriculum and its objectives of biology education. Furthermore, the thesis delves into a detailed description of the transmissive and constructivist approaches to teaching, along with their associated didactic tools. Special attention is given to teaching methods which are the subject of research in the practical part of the study, specifically IBL and frontal teaching. This section presents their basic rules, and implementation procedures. The practical part of the study compares IBL with frontal teaching, as perceived by seventh-grade students during biology classes at lower secondary school. A self-evaluative reflective questionnaire was used for the research. This part not only presents the research results but also addresses lessons preparation and implementation. The results demonstrate how students perceive the differences between IBL and frontal teaching. More precisely, which type of teaching they find more interesting useful, and during which type they believe they better develop their communication and...
Comparison of the relationship of Czech and Finnish pupils to biology and its teaching
Poneszová, Viktorie ; Rajsiglová, Ina (advisor) ; Novotný, Petr (referee)
This diploma thesis concentrates on comparing the relationship of examined Czech and Finnish pupils to biology and its teaching. The study was written with a focus on the ninth graders (n = 373) of primary schools of Prague and Oulu. The aim of this work was to compare the relationship of Czech and Finnish pupils to biology and its teaching, respectively to find out how Czech and Finnish pupils approach biology, what contributed to pupils' interest in biology and which teaching activities contribute to more enjoyable biology lessons. The research tool was a questionnaire. The data were statistically evaluated and discussed in the context of Czech literature and English literature from Finland. The results show that Finnish pupils have more positive attitude to biology than Czech pupils. The most favourite biology topic of Czech and Finnish pupils is human body. Time spent in nature contributes the most to pupils' interest in biology. Czech pupils would appreciate more excursions in biology lessons. Finnish pupils would like teachers to teach topics that pupils suggested.
An Educational Game in Teaching Human Biology at Primary Level
CAPOUCHOVÁ, Anna
The goal of diploma thesis was to create three author´s didactic games of human biology designated for education of pupils of elementary school. Games were created for 2nd year of the elementary school. The goal of the games was to acquire new knowledges and deeper existing knowledges about a topic human biology. Games follow up topics: structure of human body, senses, diseases and injures. Pupils' knowledges were verified by pretest, posttest n. 1 and posttest n. 2. Results of tests were verified between the experimental group (didactic games) and the control group (common form by using interactive exercises).
Pictograms of plants as support for a visual learning style in teaching botany
Drozdová, Anna ; Slovák, Marek (advisor) ; Poupová, Jana (referee)
The bachelor's thesis deals with pictograms of plants as a possible support for the visual learning style in the teaching of botany. It contains a cross-section of learning style topics and a cross-section of biology teaching topics. In the chapter on learning styles, it focuses on methods of research of visual learning and on pictures and pictograms used for learning. The work assumes that the visual style of learning is the most effective for learning, and that its better integration into biology lessons can raise interest even in less popular thematic units belonging to this subject. In the chapter focused on the teaching of biology, the thesis then focuses on popular and unpopular topics in biology classes, with a special focus on botany and the problems associated with its teaching. The thesis offers a solution to this situation by using plant pictograms in order to increase the popularity of botany, which could be through the application of plant pictograms in the teaching of botany in primary and secondary schools. The final section summarizes and discusses knowledge about the visual style of teaching, the use of pictorial materials, and most importantly, pictograms in streamlining the teaching of botany, supported by arguments from an array of scientific sources proving the usefulness of...

The diploma thesis deals with the creation and use of educational online escape games in the teaching of biology at the lower secondary school. As part of this thesis, an original online escape game dedicated to the curriculum about carnivoras called Escape from the carnivoras pavilion was created. Based on the theoretical presentation of the activation methods of teaching, the escape game is defined as a unique teaching method. Creation of this game is based on the principles of escape rooms as well as the specifics of educational escape games. Accompanying materials were also created in order to use the Escape from the carnivoras pavilion escape game as a comprehensive learning tool. These materials were a worksheet and a questionnaire for self-assessment of pupils. Together with the game, these were included in the teaching block in two seventh grades of lower secondary school. Its implementation provided space for an overall evaluation of the escape game based on the observation of the pupils' activity and their feedback. Testing the created online escape game in my own teaching proved its functionality from a technical point of view and didactic potential despite minor flaws in the game structure. Subsequent research among 110 teachers outlined the possibilities of further use of the designed...
