Jewish Condition as Image of Marginalization
Pavlíková, Kristina ; Jamek, Václav (advisor) ; Voldřichová - Beránková, Eva (referee)
The theme of this bachelor thesis is the life and literary work of Jacques de Lacretelle, a French literature figure of the 20th century. Its aim is to expound his extensive work which is nowadays almost forgotten. The thesis focuses mainly on Lacretelle's vision of the Jews as described in his two novels- Silbermann and The return of Silbermann. Based on the detailed analysis the thesis tries to understand the reasons of choosing the Jewish motif for Lacretelle's work and personal connotations in it. Lacretelle's life and work is studied in comparison with a Czech author called Ladislav Fuks. We shortly introduce this writer, main events of his life connected with his literary work and his unique style of writing based on the method of substitute literary themes. This approach is subsequently applied on Lacretelle's writings and gives us a new point of view of them. Also we try to compare the series about Silbermann with Fuks's short-story anthology called Mí černovlasí bratři. At the end we draw a comparison between Lacretelle and Fuks and try to discover resemblances in their lives and works. This enables to understand their motives to choose the Jews as the main characters of their writings, probably connected mainly to their feeling of non-acceptance caused by their homosexuality. New synagogue in Trutnov
Rudolecká, Anna ; Benedek, Borislav (referee) ; Dulenčín, Juraj (advisor)
The assignment of the diploma thesis was the elaboration of an architectural study of a new synagogue in the town of Trutnov, on the site of the original Jewish synagogue, which was burned down during the November pogrom, the so-called Crystal Night in 1938. Nowadays, the synagogue area is modified and serves as a place of reverence to honour the memory of the victims and to commemorate these historical events. The result of the design is a new community centre. Its goal is to restore the existence and support the development of the Jewish community, which disappeared in Trutnov after the Second World War. In the area there is the seat of the Jewish community, a ritual cleansing bath Mikveh, Kosher restaurant and a new synagogue, which respects the location of the former synagogue on the site of the original foundations. The new Jewish community centre ensures the operation of the entire Jewish community in Trutnov. Part of the Jewish community centre is a large courtyard, which is used to celebrate Jewish holidays and also as a summer terrace for Kosher restaurant, which will be used by the Jewish community, but also by the inhabitants of Trutnov. This creates an attractive place to spend free time with a view of the nearby Giant Mountains and the historic centre of Trutnov, but at the same time it is protected from the bustle of the adjacent main street.

"I am a Jew who believes in Christ.": ambivalence of Franz Werfel's approach to Judaism and Christianity by an example of his play Paul among the Jews
Šulcová, Veronika ; Zelená, Alena (advisor) ; Kunštát, Miroslav (referee)
In the life of significant representative of the Prague German Literature Franz Werfel, Judaism and Christianity played an important role, which was noticeably reflected in his work. This typical Werfel's feature is closely connected with his hometown Prague where Czechs, Germans and Jews coexisted together at the end of the 19th and at the beginning of the 20th century. Their cultures were mutually mixed and influenced by each other, Judaism and Christianity was confronted both with the Czech and the German culture. This bachelor thesis follows the antagonistic attitudes that Franz Werfel maintained towards Judaism, to which he felt bonded thanks to his origin and identity, and to Christianity, which was from his childhood of big importance for him on the emotional level. The paper examines the issue of Werfel's approach to the both religions on one of his plays Paul among the Jews from 1926, describing, according to its author, the tragic moment when Christianity detached from Judaism which resulted in the establishment of the Christian Church in the first century AD. Thus, the aim of this paper is to outline Werfel's own theological concept by analyzing his play Paul among the Jews in order to confirm or to disprove the belief, which spread after the introduction of the play to audience in 1926,...
New Synagogue in Olomouc
Kos, Jakub ; Velek, Jan (referee) ; Dulenčín, Juraj (advisor)
The project was influenced by several factors, the most significant being the water element, which is very important for Judaism and primarily symbolizes ritual purification. The concept divides the area in the axis of Nešverova Street, making an orthogonal block, further separated according to the functions, and public area under which a part of the underground parking is located. The block consists of the synagogue, museum, restaurant and administrative building of the Jewish community with a library. From the architectural standpoint, the project was significantly influenced by the stained glass window of the burned former synagogue, which was, in more modern spirit, imprinted into the museum’s facade. This window becomes a dominant element of the facade, because it pervades all three floors, so the rest of the building is not divided and for lighting of the exhibition areas skylights and artificial light are used. Significance of this concept is intensified by the fact that the visitor is dragged inside, right to the front of the synagogue, to which a ramp leads. There is an importance of the mentioned water element in the design of the synagogue. The whole concept is approached organically and was inspired by a drop of water falling down on the surface. The synagogue literally grows from a body of water which surrounds it and creates a crystalline element. The idea is amplified by the water wall which runs from the passageway all around the synagogue. Part of the administrative building and the restaurant are designed in more simple style, but the idea of arch is reflected in the moulding, which was designed intentionally with reference to the surrounding buildings. The rest of the site served as a small park and this function has been maintained. A significant element in this part of the site is Theresian gate, which remained from the 18th century fortification. The park was supplemented by an artificial bank, which covers the entrance to underground parking a
Nazi Anti-Semitism Remembered: Jewish Memorials in the SBZ and GDR between the Years 1945-1987
McQuiggan, Sean ; Emler, David (advisor) ; Šmidrkal, Václav (referee)
The thesis is an exploration into the Jewish memorial sites erected in the Soviet Zone of Occupation (SBZ) and German Democratic Republic (GDR) between the years 1945 and 1987. The primary aim of the thesis is to provide a collection of Jewish memorial sites in East Germany during the aforementioned time frame. It uses the theories of French historian Pierre Nora as well a number of other authors to legitimize the importance of these memorial sites. In addition, a typology was created by the author to ensure the proper collection of the memorial sites in order to reflect the research question: how was Nazi anti-Semitism remembered in the German Democratic Republic (GDR) through memorial sites between the years 1945-1987? The thesis is, however, more than just a collection of data. It also provides observations about trends and patterns in Jewish memorialization as well uses a method introduced by Ahenk Yilmaz to examine the individual characteristics of the sites. The thesis concludes that Jewish memorialization in the GDR was primarily a bottom-up approach, a fact that has been overlooked by many researchers in the field. František Gellner. Text - Image - Context
Kořínková, Lucie ; Wiendl, Jan (advisor) ; Merhaut, Luboš (referee) ; Tureček, Dalibor (referee)
The Ph.D. thesis deals with the Czech author František Gellner. It deliberately endeavours not to exclude any of the segments of his both literary and visual work out of consideration, but to present them all in their heterogeneity, yet in mutual connections. Works of Gellner's art are therefore interpreted in novel ways, especially in consideration of the contexts of the period from which they origin (and above others those contexts that have become obscure and forgotten in the nearly hundred years since the original publication of Gellner's work). The first chapter summarizes the previous critical reception of Gellner's work and at the same time deals with this author's image in the Czech cultural milieu. Analysing some of Gellner's manuscripts, the second chapter aims to describe the specific type of the author's creativity. The third chapter is devoted to the problem of ambiguously constructed national identity of František Gellner and to the impact it had on the ways he dealt with the themes of Jewishness and anti-Semitism. The fourth chapter describes the various relations between Gellner's works and the periodicals these were prepared for. The next chapter is dedicated solely to Lidové noviny, as this was the newspaper periodical with which Gellner co-operated most intensely; the detailed...

The aim of the diploma thesis "Alfred Fuchs (1892 - 1941)" is to describe the life and work of Alfred Fuchs. This excellent journalist, writer and translator has been unjustly neglected for a long time even though all he belonged to the important personalities of the Czech culture and political scene. He devoted a great deal of his work to the Christian theology, morality, diplomacy, culture, policy and current social issues. Regarded as an outstanding member of the Czech Jewish movement he was also a promoter of the idea of assimilation presented at his lecturers. As a journalist contributing to dozens of newspapers, he also wrote more than twenty books in his life. For example, Česká kultura, Rozvoj, Lidové listy, Lidové noviny or Přítomnost. Well-known for his entrefilets published as DRAF in the newspaper Tribuna, he was also in charge of editing Pondělník Českého slova and Prager Abendblatt. In 1921, Alfred Fuchs made a big step in his life and converted to catholicism. Considered to be an acclaimed expert on religious issues he became an important mediator between the Church and society. Since 1921 he had worked at the Press Department of the Presidium of the Council of Ministers, until 1939, when he was persecuted for racial reasons. Due to his Jewish origin he was martyred at the...
