Iron hand in a velvet glove
Briestenská, Monika ; Hýlová, Adéla (referee) ; Mléčka, Jan (advisor)
Annotation What is a prison? What is its meaning or role? What does prison mean in the context of architecture? How did prisons develop and how did these changes relate to the development of society? And should prisons not exist at all? Prison is a very controversial topic, but it still affects the lives of many people. Former convicts face prejudice and social barriers and often relapse, which we should try to prevent. The work discusses the relationship of architecture to the correction and reintegration of convicts. The architecture of the prison should respond to the tendencies that have proved effective, follow them and together with them form the most effective correctional facility. It can be seen that the course of prison designing is moving towards a more open, smaller and more friendly space. Correctional programs in open prisons work with convicts on the basis of contact with the outside world, reintegration, through work, retraining and educational programs, where architecture has a significant impact, as it maximizes the chances of convicts to be rehabilitated and is inscribed into their lives. During the work on this project, a proposal for an open prison in Olomouc was created, which considers the stages of the correction of convicts and reflects the routine of everyday life outside prison. It uses movement to break the monotony of prisoners' recurring days.

Two goals were chosen for the practical part of this work: to find out how social work is implemented in prisons from the perspective of social workers and to find out in selected prisons what procedures, methods and techniques a social worker uses within treatment programs with assigned individuals. The research was carried out using a qualitative research stratégy, where open coding created codes that were further processed in the ATLAS.ti software program. This program was also used to schematically illustrate the results. The conducted interviews were analyzed, and through the interpretation of the collected data, it was discovered what are the specifics of providing support from social workers in relation to prisoners and what approaches, methods and techniques social worker use through individually set treatments programs. The results also highlight the challenges, limits and barriers associated with providing effective interventions. In this thesis, I also deal with the issue of the convicted man and the possibilities of rehabilitation. The method of interview followed by analysis was used to find out this issue. At the end of the bachelor's thesis there is an actual evaluation of the problems of the topic from all the findings and the sources mentioned. The theoretical part is focused on defining the concepts that are important for this thesis and encompasses the basic relevant concepts with the issue. These are concepts such as social pe-education, socially pathological phenomena, punishment, crime, resocialization and recidivism. I have further enriched these topics with the issue of drugs and defining methamphetamine. The research part focuses on an interview with a man who tells about his life journey, which was accompanied not only by experimentation with drugs but also by a prison sentence. The qualitative methodology is in the form of biographical research, which aims to find out what impact a person's criminal past has on his life and how to ensure a successful return to social life without signs of recidivism. To investigate whether the respondent's different life stages may have affected his personality. Throughout, I am guided by the respondent's key events that have affected him the most in his life.
